COMMUNITY : MYTHBUSTERS

THE SHOW

I just love the show. It is brilliant. Adam is really funny, and Jamey is always serious, they make one good team. I really liked the new episode "lead balloon myth"... Tell me something you like in the show, what is your favorite myth they busted, what do you think about the junior mythbusters???

Go Mythbusters, but I can think of two myths that they messed up: 1. Bullet in the oven: They put 1 bullet into the oven and it only shattered 1 of the two panes of glass. What if the guy stored hundreds of bullets in there? They could easily break through both panes and kill the guy. 2. Golf ball through the tree: Just because a golf ball cannot make it through a tree 90% of the time does not mean that the tree is 90% air. Here's an example of why that couldn't work: Take a net with 1"x1" squares. The volume of the net is much more than 90% air, but can a basketball fit through it?

One of my favorites so far has been the Water heater tests. It was confirmed / shown plausible and is a potential danger if hot water heaters are not maintained properly.
canida in reply to GoodhartJan 28, 2008. 9:18 AM
That was pretty sweet!
One of their test blows happened during our daily meeting. It was loud, and we all bolted for the nearest windows to catch the fallout. Good stuff.
comodore (author) in reply to canidaSep 28, 2008. 1:21 PM
So your building is near where they tested? You posted this a long time ago, I'm just browsing the comments and I forgot about this one... It's nice to know that the mythbusters live in your town, isn't it? :)
canida in reply to comodoreSep 29, 2008. 4:13 PM
Our old building!
We had all four Squid Labs companies in the Control Tower on the old Alameda naval base, but when we all started growing some of us moved to downtown SF. Our sister company Makani is still located on the base.
comodore (author) in reply to canidaMay 25, 2009. 7:34 AM
So how do you like the new episodes, have you watched them?
comodore (author) in reply to canidaSep 30, 2008. 6:29 AM

The height that one went to just threw me totally off. I never would have imagined such force inside of that "very common container" inside our homes.
comodore (author) in reply to GoodhartJan 28, 2008. 2:00 PM
Yes, pretty scary for a common household item.
comodore (author) in reply to GoodhartJan 28, 2008. 7:05 AM
Yes, I like that episode too. My jaw dropped when I saw the big Water heater go off like a bomb, STEAM BOMB. :)

@Comodore:

I'm sure the 'ibles staff would change your user name to the correct spelling of Commodore, if you ask.
comodore (author) in reply to gmoonJan 28, 2008. 7:34 AM
Thank you for your concern but I miss spelled it on purpose. :)
gmoon in reply to comodoreJan 28, 2008. 8:15 AM
OK, suit yourself....
Goodhart in reply to gmoonSep 29, 2008. 4:46 PM
a long time ago, I had reasons for using the misspelling of Goodhart as Gudhart too. But that was a long time ago (do you remember the PC Jr. ? :-)
Lithium Rain in reply to GoodhartOct 1, 2008. 5:49 PM
You used to be Gudhart?!
comodore (author) in reply to Lithium RainOct 4, 2008. 1:49 PM
Really, I joined about an year ago!
Goodhart in reply to Lithium RainOct 1, 2008. 6:08 PM
After I started to use that nickname, a bunch of others started to use it too. Why, did you know of a Gudhart?
comodore (author) in reply to GoodhartOct 4, 2008. 4:22 PM
No, just curious. :)
Lithium Rain in reply to GoodhartOct 2, 2008. 9:49 AM
No, just surprised. I didn't know you changed your name!
Goodhart in reply to Lithium RainOct 2, 2008. 3:00 PM
Well, I didn't change it in here.....and it is only my moniker, as you know. Long long time ago, in the land of the recently created Web, there was a friendly monster called the Chat Planet. In that beast, were many good friends, but a few ingrates started cracking into the JavaScript code and taking over webmaster and monitor positions by force, and the chat planet shut it's doors, in a day. Poof. All my friends were like wiped from the face of the earth. No way to contact most of them, as I didn't have email addresses. It was then that I used Gudhart as my moniker.
Lithium Rain in reply to GoodhartOct 2, 2008. 3:02 PM
:( That's too bad...
Goodhart in reply to Lithium RainOct 2, 2008. 3:25 PM
Yeah, so the name gudhart is kind of reminder to a great dream that ended as a nightmare. But I did stay in touch with at least one of the members of the Chat Planet, at least :-)
comodore (author) in reply to GoodhartOct 4, 2008. 4:25 PM
Does Chat Planet still exist???
Goodhart in reply to comodoreOct 4, 2008. 5:52 PM
No, before the turn of the century, the Planet closed one day (they had been threatening it for a week because of the malicious crackers). Lost a lot of friends that day... *sigh*
comodore (author) in reply to GoodhartOct 6, 2008. 3:32 AM
To bad! I sounds interesting! Well today we have World of Warcraf! :D
Goodhart in reply to comodoreOct 6, 2008. 4:26 AM
That doesn't sound like it would attract too many "simply chatters" though. Chat Planet was huge, thousands of rooms to choose from for every taste and kink :-)
comodore (author) in reply to GoodhartSep 30, 2008. 6:28 AM
PC Jr. ??? I can't recall. Refresh my memory please.

comodore (author) in reply to GoodhartSep 30, 2008. 12:29 PM
Ok, interesting, but I wasn't even born when it was put into sail, so that the reason I don't know about this. :)
Goodhart in reply to comodoreSep 30, 2008. 12:48 PM
Ok my apologies....I keep forgetting who is near my age, and who is a few generations ago :-)
comodore (author) in reply to GoodhartOct 1, 2008. 7:58 AM
No need, we young folks learn from you older ones!
gmoon in reply to GoodhartSep 29, 2008. 6:28 PM
Sure, I remember the PC...who you callin' Jr.? ;-)
Goodhart in reply to gmoonSep 29, 2008. 8:10 PM
For that matter, do you remember the IBM PC Model 5150 ? Or the XT ? ;-) jr LOL
NachoMahma in reply to GoodhartSep 30, 2008. 10:06 AM
. I have one of the original 5150s in the bottom of one of my closets. My first "real" computer. . 16K (not M or G) of RAM soldered on the mobo, no HDD, no floppies (I used audio cassette), DOS 1.0, ~$1800 (in early-80s dollars). Video was an option.
Lithium Rain in reply to NachoMahmaOct 1, 2008. 5:49 PM
>...original 5150's... Want. :D
NachoMahma in reply to Lithium RainOct 4, 2008. 11:16 PM
. pfffffttt Your wristwatch probably has more power. I did bump it up to a whopping 64K RAM (max on mobo) and added two floppy drives, but it's still not much of a computer by today's standards. Heck, the clock speed is in single-digit MHz (~5, IIRC).
Lithium Rain in reply to NachoMahmaOct 5, 2008. 4:00 PM
Heh. For some weird reason I love old, junky, rundown computers. I don't know why. They're just awesome...and everyone I know thinks I'm crazy...
Goodhart in reply to NachoMahmaSep 30, 2008. 12:03 PM
Yeah, I didn't get a real computer before my XT (with the state of the art 10 meg HD), I did get to work on a Jr at work, using Lotus 1--2-3
And just before that, I was working at a small garage that used TRS-80 Model III computers. I learned BASIC on that machine (and later found out how different TRS-DOS BASIC was as compared to the rest of the world :-)

Until a few years ago, I had my XT still, but the motherboard died, and it would no longer boot (I still have the convertible keyboard that came with it i.e. the XT/AT switchable). I was sad to see it die, and because of problems at the time, I needed the space and the computer itself had to be put out to pasture. I do still have an 80286, an 80386 and possibly a 486 around though :-)

comodore (author) in reply to Superninjacamper941Aug 29, 2008. 2:57 AM
OOoooOO YeA! It's like a dream come true to me! :) The episode was awsome!!!
Goodhart says: Aug 28, 2008. 6:00 PM
I saw the one where they did the ancient batteries (second viewing of it really) this Wednesday when I was off work not feeling well, and I can't believe they actually hooked up all that voltage and ran the current from hand to hand. That was probably the dumbest thing they have ever done (I still like the show, but that one just got me a bit riled)
Superninjacamper941 says: Aug 13, 2008. 11:39 AM
I'm w/ you on that one smash lab is so stupid none of their inventions have worked!!!!!!
Patrik says: Jan 28, 2008. 3:31 PM
Unfortunately, I don't get them on my basic basic cable subscription, and I'm too cheap to pay an extra $33 a month to upgrade. :-(

I always look for them when I'm away on travel though. Thank god for JetBlue - 3-4 hours of Mythbusters from here to the East Coast! :-)
Ltcheesecracker in reply to PatrikAug 8, 2008. 4:59 PM
smash lab copied mythbusters! i say we destroy them with our archimedes ray guns and lazers! now who's with me!
dark sponge in reply to LtcheesecrackerAug 10, 2008. 11:41 AM
Smash lab didn't copy mythbusters at all. Mythbusters busts myths, and smash lab trys to make stuff safer by crashing things. But mythbusters is WAY better! (I watch mythbusters every time theres a new one)
Ltcheesecracker in reply to dark spongeAug 12, 2008. 4:06 PM
i wach every new one 2! and i do think that both shows have the same general idea. even comcast put both together in on demand in the descovery channel section called, and i quote! "busting and samshing" before it was just a section called "mythbusters" but that was before smash lab.
comodore (author) in reply to LtcheesecrackerAug 9, 2008. 1:16 AM
Agreed!
Goodhart says: Jan 28, 2008. 10:30 AM
And the one that disappointed me the most recently was the Cure for Hot Pepper burn. I have treated "overuse" of capsicum in my mouth and outside my mouth with vinegar as it neutralizes the alkaline of the capsicum. But they didn't try that one. *shrug*
