Zee-bloomin'-ro!

We are here !

It's 10:45 local time, sunny, we're fed, I've seen two new birds already (a chipping sparrow, Spizella passerina, and a Northern Mockingbird Mimus polyglottus), and we've just realised that we're less than 100 yards* from the nearest BART station.

The plan for the rest of the day is to trundle into the city to find our apartment, then I hear there's an interesting place to visit over on 2nd Street...

This is already shaping up to being a good experience.

UPDATE: Rather than clog up the forums with this stuff, I'm going to blog and tweet it.

*See, I'm talking American already!

*Chuckle* You'll fit right in at LA, although you may be accosted by a stranger, you also may well get completely ignored too. We're a diverse group on this side of the pond ;-)

although, wearing the Union flag as a bandana would confuse the locals in LA
canucksgirl in reply to caitlinsdadJul 30, 2012. 3:38 PM
good one.... nothing would confuse them more than wearing half and half 'colors'.
caitlinsdad in reply to canucksgirlJul 30, 2012. 6:32 PM
they would have to jump him anyway, just on principle.

caitlinsdad in reply to kelseymhJul 29, 2012. 8:39 PM
but that's the price to pay to keep the kids occupied on a long trip and the airlines know it.

Awesome picture of Churchill btw...
Kiteman (author) in reply to canucksgirlJul 27, 2012. 12:27 PM
All the way down to my toes.

Although we leave home tomorrow, it's two sleeps until we actually fly - paranoia made us book a motel near the airport, to save delayed trains making us miss the flight.

(With reasonably good reason, it turned out - several lines have been delayed by vandalism, cable theft (for scrap value) and high temperatures making overhead cables sag to much.)
canucksgirl in reply to KitemanJul 27, 2012. 12:35 PM
I would do the same thing... Even with all the Olympians that are flooding the region, you want to be as close to the airport as possible. We've been hearing loads of complaints on the news, even from cabbies.... people are having a tough time getting around.

At least there's free WiFi at the airport. :P

Is it just me, or is your page taking forever to load all the images? I'm seeing a lot of blank spaces.... (even though I have hi-speed internet). o_0
Kiteman (author) in reply to canucksgirlJul 27, 2012. 12:53 PM
London has always been a tough city to get around by car, bus etc - I simply don't do it, sticking to the train and Underground.

LOL - call it a test of the new image layout...
canucksgirl in reply to KitemanJul 27, 2012. 12:58 PM
I could get out a stopwatch and make an Olympic themed sport of it to see which image comes in last... lol

New Jersey 9 leads you to the Jersey Shore. You know, where there are people from the Jersey Shore.
Kiteman (author) in reply to caitlinsdadJul 20, 2012. 11:03 AM
Meh, it was a "9" that wasn't just a "9", and was also vaguely linked to the correct continent.
kelseymh in reply to KitemanJul 20, 2012. 1:28 PM
Why didn't you go for the correct state? Assuming you'll have a car while you're here, that one will even get you some Real Beer in less than two hours.
67px-California_9.svg.png
Kiteman (author) in reply to kelseymhJul 20, 2012. 1:44 PM
Mainly because I don't know about the road-numbering system in the US. It seems you have quite a few "Highway 9"s, but we only have one "M9" motorway.

The beer is a real possibility, because we plan to hire a car some weekends.
kelseymh in reply to KitemanJul 20, 2012. 2:21 PM
:-D The U.S. has four different highway numbering systems.

Nationally we have the pre-1950's U.S. Highways (in the Bay Area, U.S. 101 is the north-south artery) and the post-1950's Interstates (I-80 is the one from San Francisco to New York). These two systems combined are probably the equivalent of British motorways (M-series).

Each state has their own numbered highway system, with distinctively shaped signs. These are generally smaller than the national highways, and may or may not be limited-access roads; they're analogous to the British A-series roads, I think.

Most states also have county-by-county numbered roads, which are rather like the British B-series roads (typically rural, some may not even be paved!).
Kiteman (author) in reply to kelseymhJul 24, 2012. 4:34 AM
Unpaved roads are "C" roads over here. I've driven on "roads" in Eire where the only thing that separated them from farm tracks were the road signs.
kelseymh in reply to KitemanJul 24, 2012. 9:13 AM
Wow. I haven't driven on anything below a "B", then :-) And some of those (out towards Somerset and Cornwall) were pretty scary for me, with hedges scraping the windows!
Kiteman (author) in reply to kelseymhJul 24, 2012. 9:53 AM
Ah, proper roads!
caitlinsdad in reply to KitemanJul 20, 2012. 2:09 PM
make sure you drive on the right side of the road...
Kiteman (author) in reply to caitlinsdadJul 20, 2012. 2:13 PM
"Right", as opposed to "correct"?
caitlinsdad in reply to KitemanJul 20, 2012. 2:32 PM
right is correct
Goodhart in reply to caitlinsdadJul 20, 2012. 4:07 PM
Yes, since the steering wheel is SUPPOSED to be on the left
caitlinsdad in reply to GoodhartJul 20, 2012. 4:33 PM
and cars are not supposed to be coming straight at you nor should they constantly be beeping you or offering obscene gestures.
caitlinsdad in reply to caitlinsdadJul 20, 2012. 4:44 PM
wait, I take back the constant beeping and offering obscene gestures, that's normal
Kiteman (author) in reply to caitlinsdadJul 21, 2012. 1:12 AM
I've driven in the US before - the only thing that confused me was the thing about turning right through a red light.

The equivalent over here would cost you your license.
Goodhart in reply to KitemanJul 21, 2012. 10:23 AM
Right on red, IF you come to a full stop and it is clear AND if there is no sign indicating No Turn On Red, and if the state allows it LOL
Kiteman (author) in reply to GoodhartJul 21, 2012. 11:28 AM
I guess I'll stop at the red until the guy behind sounds his horn...
PKM in reply to KitemanJul 25, 2012. 7:43 AM
Though I'm probably a little late with this, the thing that really caught me out about driving in the States was that the red light tended to be on the far side of a road junction. I'm used to rolling right up to a red UK traffic light, so had a few "oh cr*p" moments when I realised I was only just able to stop before a crossroad.

It didn't help that this was in a car half a tonne heavier than my regular drive with two and a half times the horsepower o_O
Kiteman (author) in reply to PKMJul 25, 2012. 8:03 AM
Duly noted.
Goodhart in reply to KitemanJul 21, 2012. 4:25 PM
Even if one does, be careful. Some people beep the horn if you sit at a green light for one second longer than one second, and they don't always look, or see signs either.
caitlinsdad in reply to GoodhartJul 21, 2012. 4:53 PM
Beep! Beep! Beep! Beeeeeeeeep! and no texting while driving or using the cellphone.
Goodhart in reply to caitlinsdadJul 23, 2012. 5:42 PM
What.....now you're the road runner ? LOL
Lithium Rain in reply to KitemanJul 21, 2012. 8:22 AM
Oh! Be careful - while "right on red" is usually still legal here, in some areas it's not.
caitlinsdad in reply to KitemanJul 21, 2012. 7:14 AM
I've driven in CA before - the only thing that confused me was the thing about stopping for pedestrians when they stick their toe in the crosswalk...but now somebody passed a law about it in NYC too.
Goodhart in reply to caitlinsdadJul 22, 2012. 11:33 AM
Aye we have it in PA too.

Kiteman (author) in reply to caitlinsdadJul 19, 2012. 10:33 AM
The TSA are a concern - I have never left the UK without somebody in the party running foul of men in uniform...
caitlinsdad in reply to KitemanJul 19, 2012. 10:41 AM
I took my nephew and niece to visit the U.S. Mint long ago, didn't realize he carried his mini-leatherman with him, we were able to talk our way out of that one. Nowadays, you can't even carry a bottle of water through.
Kiteman (author) in reply to caitlinsdadJul 19, 2012. 11:30 AM
It's normally me that gets frisked - I set off metal detectors wearing nothing but cotton - but last year's Kenya trip had a rocky start when #2 son took a half litre of ginger beer through security.
canucksgirl in reply to KitemanJul 19, 2012. 4:51 PM
Make sure no tweezers or nail clippers in the carry on... I ran into that ordeal (as if they were weapons of mass destruction). o_0
Kiteman (author) in reply to canucksgirlJul 20, 2012. 1:42 AM
"If you can hijack a plane with tweezers, you don't need the tweezers"

I will not be wearing that on a t-shirt...
Lithium Rain in reply to KitemanJul 19, 2012. 2:25 PM
I'm really quite torn between choosing to be repeatedly groped or walking through the porn machine (and getting a nice, unhealthy dose of radiation) on my next flight.
:-\
Kiteman (author) in reply to Lithium RainJul 19, 2012. 2:28 PM
I'm given to understand (eg via BoingBoing articles) that asking to be groped instead of irradiated is tantamount to an admission of terrorism in some US airports.
Lithium Rain in reply to KitemanJul 19, 2012. 2:32 PM
It's very sad that asking for a groping is now a "subversive" act. Ahh, America.
Goodhart in reply to Lithium RainJul 21, 2012. 4:26 PM
funny, I thought a semi-public grouping (especially if you ASK for it) was always a bit perversive......oh wait, you said subversive LOL
