The War Globe

Military Spending by Andrew Cooke is a neat quick project he created that presents the amount each country spends on their military in a nice globe. The idea is neat, but what's even better is the fact that he has all the source code and instructions on how to make something like this.

figures america's got the most color.
. Using %GDP, the US is pretty average, amongst the larger countries, at 3.3%.
Eh? The US spends more money on it's military than the other 9 of the top 10 spenders put together. The US economy is currently sinking down the tubes because of the never-ending costs of running two wars which have no end-game in sight, and because much of the US manufacturing capacity has gone to the Far East. The lower costs of stuff from the Far East pumps money out to there. Even with a load of stuff still made in the US, if you stimulate the economy it only hastens the decline. A bit like driving faster because your petrol tank is low, to get to the garage in time. It doesn't take a genius to realise that the dollar is sinking long-term on the world's currency markets, just like Sterling, and running a big expensive war just pumps the money out the economy faster when most of everything is made overseas.
. Yes, the US spends more dollars on defense, but, as a percentage of what we make, it's in line with what other large countries spend (at least according to the data at the War Globe site). . I didn't hear you bitching about US military spending back during WWII. ;)
I doubt either of us were born back then. And as a percentage of the GDP, I'm pretty sure that Japan, Germany and the UK were all higher spenders back then than the USA was.

I have to agree that this is really cool - but man, what a crappy visualization of the data! :-(

Quick - someone get this man a copy of Tufte's The Visual Display of Quantitative Information!
