The end is Here ?

This is an urgent call. I think the world would really come to an end because of the increase in natural disasters around the world. I think the world would certainly come to an end with a huge tsunami. Since the effects of global warming is here, within 5-10 years i am afraid to say that the world would certainly end. So do you think this is possible ?

Thats why me and a couple of my friends are thinking of making a safehouse or ship where we could be safe in case of a tidal wave or other natural disasters. The problem is that we do not have any clue of what we are doing.
i am thinking of making a anchored kinda ship which could acompany 5 people each. This ships would contain oxygen tanks with supply of about 2 years, food and safe drinking water wit seawater purifer, necesary tools and items, survival supplies and other necesary things. This ship should contain an onboard motor engine which could enable the ship to move in water.
This ship should atleast protect the passengers from a big tsunami. It would contain a 5 passenger seating with folding beds and solar panels which could also power the engine and equipments inside.

i really wanna build this because it's a fun project and could protect peoples lives who are poor and could not afford to go on a boat or are in low lying areas.

So what do you think?

Or, you could just live on a mountain.

I'm really not meaning that as a rude remark, it is actually a practical solution.
Catsunami ilpug2 years ago
I agree. This might be the most sensible solution. Yes, there might be rain and it might get cold, but mountains will not get flooded and there will be places to hide. Just pack lots of warm clothes, food and learn how to make and sustain fire and shelter.
ilpug Catsunami2 years ago
There are various issue with it though, like the logistics involved in getting everyone onto every mountain, with sufficient supplies, and the fact that some mountains will have mud slides.
Catsunami ilpug2 years ago
Well there are logistical problems with getting everyone into boats or submarines as well. There are simply not enough resources to ensure that everyone makes it out alive in case of a natural disaster (which seems pretty evident even from "small" tsunamis, as compared to an end-of-the-world one).
It is obvious that everyone won't be saved, we just have to do our best to save who we can.

I live about 1km above sea level, so for me the real danger would be tornados, although we don't really ever get them (I think one small tornado touched down this summer). In any case, if I get reports of a super tornado heading my way, I will probably try to escape into the mountains.
Your long term plan is ambitious. As a Marine, History Teacher and Dad, I suggest you start with the basics:
  • 1st Aid Training - in an Emergency, YOU are your Doctor (and friends' and family's)
  • Learn to make fire without a lighter or matches
  • Find, filter and bring water to a boil (but no longer)
  • LEARN camping skills (plant ID+) and rules (put out your fire +)
  • Study History (battles and biographies) or repeat its mistakes
I suggest Martial Arts - mostly for the physical training and mental toughness aspect.  Military is also a good option - depending on your circumstances.

A little advise from a guy I met in College:  Study all possible situations.  IF you prepare for one style and are attacked by another style, you have no defense.  Remain open to all choices. <Yes, that's Bruce Lee - a genuinely nice guy - and me.>

REMEMBER - Enjoy the Best of Life but Prepare for the Worst!

I think you're paranoid.

Delusional, not paranoid.

Lol, come one yaar...i am just being nice..
your better of making a big blimp or plane that can float or somthing like that
Or rather then a capsizible boat, a box, more like a coffin (double duty !) and that should "float" like an iceberg, mostly under the water, and shouldn't be easily swamped.....
BLIMP AND AIRPLANE
Hey I'm fat but not THAT fat LOL
lol i dident mean that
arylic (author)  bumpus4 years ago
Hey, i know it's paranoing but....i was trying to use the end of the world concept to make the project..lol...]

Actually , i wanted to make a shelter for people in low lying areas who cannot move to higher grounds during tsunami, and it's a usual thing down here. so i wanted to make a shelter for them where they could be safe and not die.
how about that? ...lol

A disaster such as the one you are suggesting, if it did happen, wouldn't be survived by 5 guys on a boat.  A torrential storm, tsunami, flood, etc.etc.etc. would most likely capsize that pretty little vessel you plan on riding to a safe haven.

That vessel would most likely only take you one place:  Heaven.  If you believe in that sort of thing.

To be honest, it wouldn't really be worth the struggle.  If the "world" were to end, saving five or six people wouldn't really be worth the time or effort.  Considering that it would ultimately fail.
to would realy fail coz there are five guys and no girls on the boat. saving the popuation would be hard lol

Mr successful business-man: Register a domain-name, set up a web-site for your "ark" and offer people places in return for cash. When you've got some "readies" buy a ship and kit.
Oxygen - forget it. 2g per minute per person as a rough figure equates to ~1 tonne per year, but you'll lose a lot through "boil-off" over that length of time.
Also, you're unlikely to get sufficient warning of a tsunami to get on the boat and get far enough away, not to be sunk or swept inland.

Hehe....yah right. i was thinking of making a safehouse for low lying areas which could be affected by tsunami's. It would be water proof with strong foundation so even thousands of pounds of energy could not break it...lol

I'm serious. People do have these ideas, they sell spaces.
Here's a related poor news article:
www.mefeedia.com/news/26724164 "and float on lava..." "I think it's silly" "profit-making"
(Oh and don't forget to pack plenty of Smeat)

You're quite right.  The world will end.  But for the next billion years ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_giant#The_Sun_as_a_red_giant ) being prepared for a natural disaster isn't a bad idea.  Since you live on an island preparedness for tsunamis is definitely wise.

However, you probably don't need an oxygen supply.  Air is certainly available - even during tsunamis.

If you would really like to help poorer people I think that focusing on two things would really help.  Early warning systems.  And preparedness for after a natural disaster.

Does your community have a tsunami alert system?  Is it tested annually?  Do people know what to do?

Assuming that people have reached high ground and immediate danger has passed, how sustainable is your community?  Assume that airstrips and ports are damaged beyond use.  Assume barges of freight will not arrive for months.  Think about the worst case scenarios but be realistic.

Fiji isn't set up for a cataclysmic tsunami that's thousands of meters high (and even if it was it looks like you don't need a special ship to survive one http://geology.com/records/biggest-tsunami.shtml read about the world's largest tsunami wave - as seen by humans at least)

Maybe working on education and preparedness would be a more valuable use of resources.
arylic (author)  zieak4 years ago
Yeah, i know just a doubt.
Oxygen yould be needed if the container is submerged underwater or if there is a flood. you don't want to exchange breath with 10 people .
Fiji does have a poor warning system.
there is not many high grounds in the urban areas.

Someone's just watched 2012, a truly dreadful movie.

I believe any catastrophic worldwide disaster is necessary for the human race, the reason I believe for why something like this will happen is because man is not progressing onto the next life fast enough, ceiling cat is becoming impatient.
arylic (author)  ll.134 years ago
No, i did not. I watched that movie in the cinemas last year. what inspired me was the newspaper which showed the effects of the tsunami in samoa. I don't want that to happen in fiji. So i hope to make a couple of that shelter to save people.
Kiteman4 years ago
There is no increase in earthquakes, tsunamis or volcanism.

There is only an increase of awareness - thanks to the internet, more disasters are brought to our attention, much more quickly.

When Krakatoa blew, it was days, even weeks, before most of the planet knew why the sunsets were changing colour.

Build your ship, by all means, but do not expect to survive a world-ending event.  Even if, by some Hollywood chance you do, all a handful of people could realistically expect is a lingering, lonely death.

arylic (author)  Kiteman4 years ago
yeah i guess. I think i was just to paranoid..lol... But still i can make one for fun and atleast let people survive a tsunami in low lying areas. I would be something like a large cargo container suspended to the ground strongly.
Lingering, lonely death.  Sounds like ADVENTURE!

MAoFL__ADVENTURE_by_elixirXsczjX13.jpg
Well, I mean, first off a supply of oxygen for two years for how many people? 5? That'll be massive. How will you pick who gets a seat? 4 seats aside from yourself doesn't help very many poor people... What happens after you run out of air? Why would you need air in the first place?
arylic (author)  Lithium Rain4 years ago
No, i mean some way to purify and save oxygen. Also that oxgen cylinders would turn on only when the ship is submerged under water. when the water leaves , it turns off.
Why would you need air in the first place?
Wait, what?
I wouldn't want to be in a ship during a Tsunami. If it is a huge Tsunami, it would have to be a pretty strong ship. Stronger then most buildings (or all buildings)
arylic (author)  Rock Soldier4 years ago
it would not be like a ship something more like a small cargo container type of thing. This big triple layer metal box would be suspended to 6 big foundational cement in the ground which would be able to hold it for the first blow. Then we would start up the small engine and drive our way back...
