UK Mini Maker Faire - The Derby Silk Mill - New Poster to Share!

Seems that the folks at Nottingham Hackspace (Nottinghack) and some new folks called Derby Makers are putting on a Mini Maker Faire bang in the middle of the UK, on Sunday the 3rd of June. We've just put up some cash to help things along and will be attending. Who's with us?

The Mini Maker will be held at the Silk Mill, which is reputed to be oldest factory in the UK, and up until recently was an industrial museum. It's still part of the museums trust and has some fantastic exhibits inside (Rolls Royce Merlin engine is my favourite!) which will be nestled alongside all manner of makers.

So are you coming? If not why not?

Hello all,

Just to let you know that as the Community Team member closest to Derby, I will be representing Instructables at the Derby Mini Maker Faire.

I will have my big painted Instrutables robots, and more stickers than I know what to do with.

So do come on down and say hello.

Right - we're off early tomorrow to try & beat the Bank Holiday traffic.

I'll try & post over the weekend if there's access to wifi, even if it's only a tweet or two (watch @KitemanX), but otherwise I'll post photos on Monday.

If you're going, come and see us on the Instructables stand, we'll have Robot stickers, and even (a few) actual fabric patches for special people...

Sunday is a bit of a sod for transport, but I'm still planning.

I'm interested, but can't commit yet.

Any news on your commitment issues Lemonie?
lemonie says: May 8, 2012. 11:17 AM
I think I'm free; I've eliminated 3 events that aren't on that weekend now and I can't think of any more. Yea!

phenoptix (author) says: May 10, 2012. 12:50 AM
Excellent work! I'll see you there!
lemonie says: May 10, 2012. 1:26 PM
Yes, that'll be good, I don't think we've met before(?)

I've never made it to an instructables event or a maker faire before, despite being around for a while! I've been too busy putting LEDs into bags for most of the time!
lemonie says: May 13, 2012. 2:33 PM
As long as you're not putting LEDs up your nose or in your ears...

Kiteman says: May 10, 2012. 10:36 AM
Isn't that the wrong robot on the poster?
phenoptix (author) says: May 10, 2012. 1:02 PM
I think the organisers had enough fun getting the licence from Make let alone the instructables robot!
Kiteman says: May 10, 2012. 1:07 PM
It's not so hard to get permission to use Robot...
caitlinsdad says: May 10, 2012. 2:18 PM
They seem to now flaunt the "World's Biggest Show and Tell" now.
Kiteman says: May 10, 2012. 2:55 PM
What, Make use it?
caitlinsdad says: May 10, 2012. 4:11 PM
http://cdn.makezine.com/make/makerfaire/bayarea/2012/MF12BA_Program_LoResFINAL.pdf Hmm, it seems it is The Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth but I recall seeing it blogged elsewise..  Maybe pro quid pro for share what you make.  Undisclosed terms of the backroom deal?

this comment will self-destruct after reading.
Kiteman says: May 11, 2012. 9:13 AM
Hmm, those parentheses probably help them avoid any legal shenanigans.
caitlinsdad says: May 11, 2012. 10:30 AM
You sure don't want to tangle with a bunch of clowns.
Kiteman says: May 3, 2012. 11:02 AM
Oh, good luck - what sort of people have you got arranged, or is this the first call?

phenoptix (author) says: May 3, 2012. 12:19 PM
There's about 30 people showing I think, there's a really wide range. From book binding to quadcopters to light painting and steampunk. There's been a really good uptake so far.
gmjhowe says: May 4, 2012. 1:52 AM
I am going to be there representing instructables Kiteman.

Basically if any of the inner sanctum/Community Team want to join me, I have space for a few extra people.

Plus you remember how busy it was at the Maker Faire in Newcastle, and there was nigh 8 of us there.
Kiteman says: May 6, 2012. 1:33 PM
I've got news to tell you when we get there...
Kiteman says: May 4, 2012. 11:09 AM
I'm pretty sure I can make it, and I'll probably have company.
Kiteman says: May 6, 2012. 12:21 PM
We've booked our motel room for Saturday & Sunday nights (it's the first weekend of our half-term break).

All we need now are tickets for the event...
Kiteman says: May 6, 2012. 12:30 PM
Jayefuu says: May 6, 2012. 12:34 PM
I don't get it... so you buy a ticket online but still have to pay £2.50 at the door? How much is the online ticket? It doesn't say how much the ticket at the door is without the eventbright thing.
Kiteman says: May 6, 2012. 12:45 PM
The online thing is a voucher - you get a PDF file to print out and show at the door.
Jayefuu says: May 6, 2012. 12:46 PM
Ahhh right, that wasn't very clear.
Jayefuu says: May 6, 2012. 9:08 AM
This sounds fun, can I buy a ticket at the door? So long as I'm not in the US at the time, I'm likely to be there!
Kiteman says: May 6, 2012. 12:29 PM
Seems you can, but if you register here, you get a discount.
caitlinsdad says: May 4, 2012. 4:29 PM
Any live links on the day of the Faire? Skype or Facetime or streaming? At least have an upload of a video tour of the highlights of the event. Good luck.
phenoptix (author) says: May 5, 2012. 1:08 AM
Not sure if a live feed has been arranged, we should see if we could do it. I think various video tours will be uploaded!
Kiteman says: May 4, 2012. 12:40 PM
For navigation purposes, is this the right place?
phenoptix (author) says: May 5, 2012. 12:51 AM
That's the right place, some of the pictures and reviews are for the pub across the road though! I'm a little unsure of the parking plans for the event. I'll see if I can find that out!
PKM says: May 4, 2012. 7:51 AM
While I've probably been absent for long enough not to count as "inner sanctum" any more, I'd love to come up and will happily demo some stuff if need be (and there's space).
gmjhowe says: May 4, 2012. 12:25 PM
Hey now, there is no leaving the inner sanctum. If you can make it up, it would be great to see you. We will have plenty of space. We can always rotate people who are on the table.

Obviously the more awesome projects we have the better.
phenoptix (author) says: May 4, 2012. 8:43 AM
Those "inner sanctum" tattoos don't fade do they?!
killerjackalope says: May 3, 2012. 11:04 AM
Oh come on! I'm supposed to be in nottingham on the 7th...
gmjhowe says: May 4, 2012. 1:51 AM
What you doing in nottingham on the 7th? We should so meet up if we can.

(I am a member of Nottingham Hackspace so can show you around etc)
killerjackalope says: May 4, 2012. 5:02 AM
Visiting a friend, I'm over for a few days, think it's the friday to the tuesday, so should be able to meet you at some point over that, It'd be awesome to see the hackerspace...
phenoptix (author) says: May 3, 2012. 12:25 PM
So Derby the week before for a taster! You should try and visit the hackspace in Nottingham if you can, they've done great things!
killerjackalope says: May 4, 2012. 5:03 AM
Ah I'm over in Northern Ireland, so not just a car journey... I'll hopefully manage to see it...
Kiteman says: May 3, 2012. 11:47 AM
What time is it on?
phenoptix (author) says: May 3, 2012. 12:27 PM
It's on from 11-4, with the Saturday being open for the makers who are exhibiting. They might let lowly sponsors in too if I'm lucky.
Kiteman says: May 3, 2012. 2:05 PM
That sounds [provisionally] do-able as a day trip!
phenoptix (author) says: May 3, 2012. 8:38 AM
So what are your thoughts folks? I thought I'd make the first comment as I couldn't find the post on the community blog list!
