Website doesn't recognize users

Instructables.com never recognizes me from one visit to the next. Every time I click on a link in an email (unless I already have instructables windows open, and I'm logged in) it doesn't know who I am.

Granted, this is bordering on a feature request, but I do think that it should be considered a bug.  Since pretty much every other website that isn't a bank account recognizes the user, I would call it a bug unless there is a reason for forcing the user to log in on every visit.

Thanks

EDIT (Aug 21, 2012):
I was using Windows XP with Firefox when I had this problem, and it was consistent for at least a year across different machines.
Since posting this question, instructables hasn't asked me to log in again!  Maybe it's because I switched to Chrome a couple of days ago, or maybe it was just me.

Since this is not a typical, please never mind.

Have you checked your browser settings?

My computer only forgets my long if there has been a browser update.

Which browser settings? There are a lot of settings, especially in Firefox and *shutter* IE.

This usually happens to me far more often than I update my browser, although I suppose it's possible that my browser updates more frequently than I realize. Still, I don't have this problem with any other website.

I visit instructables at least a couple of times / week, which is far more often than most other sites, but other sites seem to remember me.
Actually, when you first logged in, did you check the box that says "keep me logged in"?

See: www.instructables.com/account/login

Try that.

I was definitely doing that, at least most of the time.
You should only need to do it once (browser updates notwithstanding).

Meh, I'd chalk this one up to the "black magic" area of coding...

I personally don't have this problem, Instructables always remembers me and I don't get logged out. But a lot of other users have said that it's an issue for them, even ten minutes apart, they get logged out.

Of course, this time it remembered me. I swear, I think it's the first time ever. It's annoying because it also has so many things that bug you to sign up. So, when I'm already a member (non-pro, but still a member), it's annoying to have to deal with all the reminders when I don't need reminding.

I feel a little ridiculous worrying about this when there are so many other problems in the world.... but hey, why shouldn't instructables be the best it can be, right?
Yeh, I can imagine it's annoying. What browser and OS do you use?
geneorama (author)  Jayefuu5 years ago
Usually it's Windows XP, Firefox

Although it also used to happen on Windows 7 when I had that.

Judging from the comments, this is not a widespread problem. I was assuming that my experience was similar to other users, and it isn't.

Also, I can't even replicate the problem today, so never mind.
