What can I do with a scavenged 9" TFT panel?

Over the last several years I have been through three different pairs of portable DVD players.  Since they don't work anymore, I yanked the displays from them.

What can I build with these bad boys?  Is there any way to use them without the controllers from the players?  If not, where can I get a controller?

Reusing an LCD display panel yanked out from its original configuration like from a laptop, gaming devices or DVD, what have you, and trying to get it working in something else is the holy grail of DIY. LCD panel display electronics are so integrated into the original device and being proprietary and custom for each device, drivers, code, electronics are not easily available for the regular hacker.
