What do you normally eat for breakfast?

I'm sorry, I just can't stop talking about food. :P

I was reading the latest issue of Saveur magazine last night and this morning, and it has to be one of the most interesting things I've ever had the pleasure of reading. It's all about breakfast, which is quite frankly the most important and wonderful meal of the day. The magazine had a number of different articles about what people eat for breakfast all over the world, in addition to recipes for all these magical foods I'd never heard of. :D

I typically don't have much time these days between work and school, so my breakfast is usually whole wheat toast with butter and raspberry, orange or apricot preserves, maybe some sunflower butter. I almost always have tea in the morning - I think my favorite is coconut chai at the moment. If I'm really short for time I'll have my standard soy milk and mega fiber hippie cereal. :)

If I do have time though, I'll make biscuits and gravy or sometimes Jace will make pancakes. I've only made french toast once with friends, but I'd like to get that going more often. I also really like to heat up different soy sausages and have those with toast and hot cereal.

I also like having hot multigrain cereal with apples cut up in it, with cinnamon and honey. That will never get old.

So what do you eat for breakfast? I want to know all about it!

Nutritional experts have referred to breakfast as the most important meal of the day, citing studies that find that people who skip breakfast are disproportionately likely to have problems with concentration, metabolism, and weight....I'am not an expert so, a simple breakfast like: variety of asian bread ( coconut bread, ensaymada, hopia w/ onions etc. ) if there no bread I prefer for a wheat biscuit & a fruit like banana or apple or orange & a cup of green tea w/ lemon & honey...that's it ! :-)
I think that breakfast is essential, too important
!But my breakfast simple example: a green onion roll and a cup of milk, a pancake and milk, a red bean bread and apples, I felt it was delicious!
In the breakfast habits of the majority of Chinese people! You can also come here to taste!
It wasn't for breakfast, but my brother (12) made himself a nacho yesterday (yeah, "a" nacho-my sister made him quit after that) that had on it: -Cheddar cheese -Steak sauce -Liquid smoke -Mayonnaise -Sweet and sour sauce -Mustard >_<

Oh my. That might be the least appetizing food item I've ever heard of. :P
I forgot, he also put caramel ice cream topping on it.
jessyratfink (author)  Lithium Rain5 years ago
I'm not sure whether to laugh or gag, honestly! Perhaps a bit of both is in order. :P
how about laugh UNTIL you gag? LOL
I forgot, he also put caramel ice cream topping on it.

My response after reading that, and your previous comment. *Stares at your comments and half mouths, "Oh my god..."
XD
It's horrific. This is the same brother that makes peanut butter-mayonnaise-butter sandwiches. I'm surprised he's still alive.
peanut butter-mayonnaise-butter?
Yep!
He'll have clogged arteries before he passes puberty if he hasn't already
Haha. He's actually very active, so he's quite slim. He just likes disgusting food.
Thin persons can have heart attacks from clogged arteries too. That mayonnaise n butter mix is not good for anyone.
Good point. :D
coffee
i, for some reason don't like eating when i get up....
I only eat breakfast on weekends (I get up too early for food on weekdays), but often it's pitta bread (toasted) with yeast extract and cucumber or tomatoes. thick slices of cucumber so it makes a loud crunching noise to annoy my sister.
Sometimes I make farina/semolina with soyamilk and eat it with a bit of jam.
The two weeks after Christmas, it's leftover Christmas food for breakfast, like beetroot soup, cabbage and mushroom vol-au-vent, carrot and almond flan, roast mediterranean vegetable flan... lasts for ages.
Trolls.
jessyratfink (author)  Lithium Rain5 years ago
I hope you wash them first!
I have to give them a good scrubbing, and boil throughly - like other vegatables they're toxic unless boiled twice.
Really? Didn't know that. Do they taste like chicken? Well... boiled chicken?
skunkbait5 years ago
Reheated leftovers. BBQ, Curry, Spaghetti, Steak, or Salad, usually with a glass of wine.
jessyratfink (author)  skunkbait5 years ago
That's one I've never heard before. I do admit to eating cold BBQ for breakfast before, but not with wine. ;)
Bloody marys?
jessyratfink (author)  Yerboogieman5 years ago
Yick! I've never had one but they freak me out. :P
Eh, they're okay if they're not Really strong.
I just can't drink anything with tomatoes in it.
I can't eat or drink anything with tomatoes.
Well, I have to fess up. I work the midnight shift, so, my "breakfast" (8 AM meal), is more like a midnight snack!
Well you should really tried chilaquiles its a Mexican dish for breakfast but can be eaten at every meal time. It consists of tortillas of course with mole' and queso fresco fresh cheese that is and toped with onions and or parsley .I know sounds strange to have such a strong dish but its bold its empowering and plush its vegetarian unless you add chicken. The dish is best when the tortillas are slightly fried enough to give it a crispy edge that and wit the spicy and sweet mole' OH its really good.
That sounds so so so good. Suddenly my morning yogurt with fruits, nuts and honey seems really boring. :P
Suddenly my morning yogurt with fruits, nuts and honey seems really boring.

But it seems good too...
WELL I'll TRY TO GET THE RECIPE FROM MY MOMS YOU KNOW "FAMILY RECIPE" AND ALL TOP SECRET....
That's the sort of project that makes a good food Instructable - make sure to write it up carefully and take decent pictures.

Breakfast Burrito- Tortilla (big size, I like flour but it is fattening) Scrambled eggs Bacon or Sausage or Both Potatoes (diced or hash style) Cheese (I like mozzarella or you can use 4 cheese Mexican) Ketchup/BBQ sauce/Salsa What's good about this breakfast is its versatile because you can add: peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, onion or you can toast the tortilla (and make it crunchy), you can make your eggs sunny side up so when you bite in yolk goes all around it. you can also make tacos/quesadilla/tostado/taquitos with the same ingredients.

  • English Muffin, mate
  • Eggs, toast, sausage, bacon
  • homemade waffles
Mate?

Incorrectly used slang, no doubt ;-)
Indeed! Lolz

I rarely eat breakfast food.. I get home from work at about 7am. Though I can't blame that as I wasn't big into it before. I usually eat leftovers, and cook later. I have gone outside; gotten out the barbecue grill, and cooked up steak, and potatoes in the early morning occasionally though! : D
jessyratfink (author) 5 years ago
I've changed up my breakfast lately. I'm trying to cut down on the amount of carbs I eat for breakfast because it's better that you eat less so early in the morning. Now I'm doing about 3/4 a cup or plain yogurt, a handful of bran flakes, a handful of dried fruit and a bit of honey. It's so good. :D

Bagels Honey Bunches of oats What does my brother eat for breakfast? A cheese sandwhich with mustard
jessyratfink (author)  Flumpkins5 years ago
Yours sounds okay, your brother's... not so much. :P

I try (since my operation) to balance mine a bit. 1 1/2 cups of stone rolled oat (meal, not the favored kind with all the sugar and junk in it), a half cup of Egg Beaters mixed in. Cooked in the Microwave for 2 minutes, I then add wheat germ (about a half cup) and olive oil (a tbsp or so), a dash of low sodium salt, and a few tbls of ground flax seed. After reheating for a short bit, I add a piece of cheese and melt/stir that in. Now I have every food group except fruit, and so I will grab an apple or orange along with my bowl of enhanced oatmeal :-)
I forgot, I also tend to add crushed red hot pepper or cayenne pepper to the oatmeal too......keeps me warm all winter ;-)

i only have about 5 min to cook/make and eat breakfast, also i find cereal and toast boring :( Do you know any relatively quick tasty breakfasts ?
jessyratfink (author)  =SMART=5 years ago
My favorite is this:

Bob's 8 grain hot cereal
An apple, chopped finely
A bit of honey
Cinnamon if you want

You just mix it all together (it's 1/4 cup of cereal and 3/4 cup of water) and nuke it for five minutes or so. It's delicious. The apples and honey get really gooey and wonderful. Plus, it's really filling and quite healthy.
wow ! That sounds delicious ! I'm definitely going to try that :D Thanks, i cant wait for breakfast lol, i think im going to have some now :P
LOL
Try it its yum !
Yeah, I will, it sounds delicious to me too!
jessyratfink (author)  =SMART=5 years ago
So d'you make it? :D
Hell yea i did ! It was delicious !! I diddnt have any of the Bob's cereal so i mixed oat's with a similar kind of various grain cereal, then i did what you said and added water, apple bits and honey (also a bit of maple syrup, i love that stuff :P ) then i microwaved it for 5 min. I made some for my brother too, he loves it too, he keeps on making me make it for him lol. Its my new favorite food ... well its in a tie with beef stroganoff but as their completely different meals i guess i don't have to decide !
jessyratfink (author)  =SMART=5 years ago
Yay! I'm so happy you liked it. :D It's also really good with peaches and mangoes. And cardamom and ginger are good, too. I could really write an entire instructable over it, hahaha.
:D I'm sure you could ! mmmmmm Peaches and Mango sounds yummy, ill try that tomorrow morning! I haven't heard of cardamom before, i just Googled it and apparently its from the ginger family, is that right? does it taste similar to ginger ?
jessyratfink (author)  =SMART=5 years ago
Sort of, but less bite! It's a little sweet, too. :)

Breakfast is my most variable meal. Sometimes nothing, but then I'll have a handful of dried apricots or prunes when I get to work (I keep a bag in my desk drawer). Sometimes cereal like Shreddies, cornflakes or Shredded Wheat. Sometimes fresh fruit (especially a banana). Sometimes fruit pie, if there's any left from the night before. If I'm feeling extravagant, a bar of Fruit and Nut on the way to work. Very occasionally, the boys will fancy waffles, and get carried away toasting them, so I end up having waffles for breakfast at the weekend. When I was at university, a frequent breakfast was a pint of orange juice and a Marathon Bar (now Snickers) bought from the corner shop on the walk to the first lecture.
lol, you keep your breakfast in your desk drawer? :-)
Yup!

It's not officially "breakfast" - I just like to snack on dried fruit - but sometimes it becomes breakfast if I'm slow off the mark.
lol. It can be handy when you forget your "real" breakfast!

Weetabix, last me till lunch, and good for my digestive transit!
Cool, I gave up on toast and started having Weetabix a while ago...
jessyratfink (author)  gmjhowe6 years ago
I read about Weetabix in the magazine. It seems kinda like shredded wheat.. but bigger!
wait you don't have weetabix over there?
jessyratfink (author)  gmjhowe6 years ago
Never heard of it before this morning! I can check when I go shopping today just to be sure, but I'm not sure they sell it in the US.
. From Wikipedia article on Weetabix:
The cereal is manufactured in Burton Latimer, United Kingdom and in Canada and exported to over 80 countries. (my emphasis)
. I don't remember seeing any in the grocery stores around here, but I live in a small Southern US town and I don't go grocery shopping much.
. Happy hunting
You are all missing out so much. WAIT does that mean you dont have weetos either?????
jessyratfink (author)  gmjhowe6 years ago
Yeah, they don't exist here! I just got back from grocery shopping. We just have shredded wheat and things like that. :P
Thats just painfull, there so nice as well. Both weetos and weetabix, you have no idea how much your missing out!
we do have a product called Shredded Wheat, and we could, at one time, get the REALLY big biscuit type, but I don't see that one in the stores anymore either. People are favoring miniWheats (especially the sugar coated ones *bleh*)
But the sugar coating is the best part!
I know! I LOVE sugar coated shredded wheat!
*shiver* all those simple sugars.....just thinking about it makes my waist expand some LOL
Ahh, metabolism. Gotta love it when you have one. :P
Well, I have read that metabolism doesn't really change much with age, but we do slow down our activity sometimes with age......and that effects how much energy we burn as opposed to storing it :-) Extra exercise to increase the metabolic rate a little, but it also burns off calories consumed, which is what I am after right now :-)
Captain! We have an indunation of information incoming in response to one of the joke torpedos we launched! It's pierced the hull! Interest levels are falling! The life is being slowly drained out of the ship! What do we do?!

All hands ABANDON SHIP.
Wait a minute, indunation ? *sorry*
It's all right-just teasing. :) I'll get that link for you later, I thought sure I had PMed it to you...oh wells, I'll dig it up tomorrow (have to get off now, just checked my inbox).
I said sorry for pointing out the spelling error typo: indunation ;-)
Ha-I didn't even notice... :D
:-P
:D
Apparently now they have blueberry!
jessyratfink (author)  Doctor What6 years ago
Strawberry, too. I saw that when I was shopping.
They have Weetabix here, they just aren't looking for them, and honestly if you try them with hot milk on cold day they are fantastic first thing in the morning....
bumpus gmjhowe6 years ago
Nope.
Nothing like it IMO

http://home.uchicago.edu/~nmchang/

This person seems to have tryed to eat it dry, if you can find them try it but just with milk and maybe a teaspoon of sugar if you have a sweet tooth (BTW Let the milk soak into the weetabix or put on enougth to cover it fully)

Me, for breakfast I have Marmite on toast or ready brek or weetabix.
Actually i prefer mine wetted, but still slightly crispy, i dont like them all mushy
