Wheel Leg All terrain design

I came up with a wheel leg design a while ago http://us.mindstorms.lego.com/nxtlog/myprojectdisplay.aspx?id=d5808c2d-b658-4b8e-b0f2-06c6152a2f66. Vex came up with this product and it looks a lot like my design. I think this would be a great design for an mars rover. I got the idea from rex robots. I thought, " Why not put more of those on?"

For Mars rovers, there are two main issues (read through the ~weekly logs of the Spirit and Opportunity missions): running into rocks, and getting caught in sand. These spoke-wheels look like they'd handle rocks okay, levering up and over. But what will they do on fine sand or dust?
turn them around and they'd work fine
It's not obvious to me (from the posted image) that these spoke-wheels could handle fine sand. It seem to me that they would simply slice through (think of a fork going through flour), rather than making forward progress. I'm sure that I'm being simplistic, but that means making a prototype and testing it in a sand tray.
Of course, I was thinking of a wider version.

yeah, like a paddle
What people are talking about are whegs - a combination of wheel and leg.

They seem quite capable of crossing many terrains (check youtube for examples).

Yes, that's what we're talking about, I never realized they were called whegs. They do have amazing all terrain capabilities. I would imagine some pop out objects to make them wider and would be an amphibious vehicle.
