Why you can never have a "true" knex semi auto with decent power/range.

Ok here goes I will try to simplify my theory down a bit so everyone can understand:

basicly energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be converted, eg kinetic into heat, chemical into kinetic ect. Knex guns are no exception, the enery has to come from somewhere, in most guns this takes the form of pulling back a pin or rubberbands to create potential energy, this is released when the trigger is pulled, this potential energy is converted into kinetc energy and this is how the bullet is fired.

A semi automatic gun is required to fire every time the trigger is pulled, but the energy still has to come from somewhere. RBG's take this into account as each band is pulled back and has potential energy stored, however many knexer's opinions differ on whether this is truly semi automatic, many calling this type of gun a psuedo semi auto. Other guns use the energy imparted on pulling the trigger to create the potential energy to power the bullet, this is considered to be a true semi auto, however the main drawback of this system is that the amount of energy that can be transfered from the trigger to the bullet is very limited, therefore this type of mechinism has limited power.

So if the problem is energy how do we solve this? one possible answer is to have an extra source of energy, such as a motor or a winding system that puts extra energy back into the system, however this approach will not give you a "true" semi auto as you will have to have an external source of energy, that and the fact that knex motors do not have the power and torque needed for this system.

So what's your opinion, do you have anything to add?

You have been disproven by two people, me and kinetic. Ik this is a late comment but we r just trying to spread the word so the knex gun community doesnt die. Look up wertyan123's channel and click on the video truely knex semiautomatic.and of course kinetics channel. The klsv2 is what it is called. Please check them out and spread the word.
By the way mine is just a prototype gun. The mag is what im sticking with though.

that isn't your theory. it's just as it is, I did not knew that a lot of people did not understand this. so thanks

The only way u can have a good semi/ full auto is through the power of a very strong motor. So thats why Im working on a gun that is powered off a drill.

We are limited by the materials we use. We'll never make anything powerful without the use of air or explosive chemicals.
I still don't understand why people aren't willing to use weapons like RBGs. "Cocking" the gun 8 times or so and then getting 8 shots is a lot like cocking a single shot 8 times and firing them off all individually. The difference is that you're limited to only one shot on those while you can fire multiple times in succession with the RBG.
Anyways a "true" semi auto is limited to the energy your finger can create. This pretty much means you can only shoot a k'nex piece as far as you can flick it.

exactly. I did have an idea of a system where you pull back a charging handle which cocks back four small repeaters, each with its own mag, these are then fired off one at a time, then the charging handle it pulled back again and the process repeats.

Something I wanted to try out was like a combination of the K'nexsayer and oodagat. Have a semi automatic turret gun and then have a pump that cocks each individual firing pin one at a time. It'd be rather complicated and I never figured out a good way to make a rotation mech for such a gun.

This wouldn't make too much of a practical war weapon but I thought it would be pretty cool if someone made a chain of basic block trigger guns and put it through a crank gun on a tripod. That'd be beastly. Another more piece efficient version of this is just to use splodies instead of block trigger guns. They'd be less stable but save a lot more pieces.

Lets put a bit of gun powder in our knex bullets!
LOL, JK... XD
If you have an idea for a semi auto knex gun, I am willing to try it out!

How about just making the trigger that pulls the system back strong enough to handle more power?
Fred the Penguin (author) in reply to DJ RadioMar 15, 2010. 7:30 PM
but you can only put energy into the system via your finger, this means you can never have something as powerful as say a tr where alot more energy can be put in because you have a much smaller pin pullback
DJ Radio in reply to Fred the PenguinMar 15, 2010. 8:13 PM
Then lets make it so that you have to put your whole arm into it.  Make a super big semi auto trigger that can only be pulled with your own arm.
knexguy in reply to DJ RadioMar 22, 2010. 3:52 AM
It would be almost impossible to aim with, and the 'trigger' would probably break quite often, or be ridiculously bulky.

Not quite it.  What I meant was when you pulled it back the shot would fire when you pulled it back to a certain point.  Not pulling it back behind a trigger of sorts.  Ooda's semi auto rifle has this concept.
Fred the Penguin (author) in reply to DJ RadioMar 17, 2010. 7:56 PM
ok I get you, still the amount of power in the system is still less than in a typical pin gun.

You have seen the K.F.S.A, right?
DJ Radio in reply to Raikou-sanMar 16, 2010. 10:32 AM
That's only as powerful as the power you put into pulling the trigger.
Raikou-san in reply to DJ RadioMar 16, 2010. 11:50 AM
It has a rubberband to build up potential energy, which the trigger is pulled, it pulls the hammer back, which builds energy in the rubberband, when released, creates a lot of force hitting the bullet.

Did you just draw that?

things like that just make me laugh, I am just trying to explain why there cannot be a knex semi auto with decent power or range.

HAY NAOW!! I'd like to think of my thread as a civilized discussion for the most part =P it's why people stupid is actually a good thing sometimes. Heck, the world might be a better place if ran by children [/sarcasm]

then why did you post that comment?

I don't know.
