Would this LED idea work?

Hello, I was thinking about this concept all day today, in which two potentiometers could vary the voltages to 2 of the 3 legs on a biocolored LED, thus being able to produce many different colors. I figure that I could hook up 3 volts, then (in parallel) hook up the two potentiometers to two of the leeds off the LED, the third being the ground. I'm not exactly an electronics guru, (and I hope that I had my vocabulary right in my explanation), but would this work? Also, where can I get some bicolor LED and potentiometers with knobs?

it'd work you should have the potentiometers in series with the leads, and ground simply being ground. You couldn't produce all of the colors, but a bunch (only 2 colors, you need 3 for all of the colors). I'd also install some safty resistors so that you don't acidentally turn the pot all the way down to 0 and burn out your led. Just put something like a 330 ohm resistor in series. I'd use 10k pots.

Hey thanks! Yeah this has been bugging me all day, part of me was convinced it would work, part wasn't. I think I'll put the LED in a Ping-Pong ball, it diffuses the light nicely and it looks cool. I'll post an instructable when I make this. And if I used a 3 volt power source with a 3 volt LED, would I need any safety resistors?
well, I'd use something like 5 volts, I think you should use a resistor... but I'm not sure careful when you open up pingpong balls, it smells nasty inside. Anybody who wants to try: Put a ping-pong ball ontop of a running heat gun so it levitates. After about 15-20 seconds it'll be all deformed and sweeled and stuff.. THen it bursts, a terrrible smell that will stink up the area for weeks. The remedy: Run fans, spray like 2 cans of that spray that makes the smell go away, not covering it up, it's like out or something. Took 2 days with all of that little bit too much curiosity.
I'd be careful with that. Some pingpong balls contain what seems to be somewhat flammable gas.

Yeah maybe it was flammable gas that burnt the plastic? Burning plastic is pretty bad for you.
Yeah it is, and some plastics are much worse then others (PVC for instance)

Haha nice story, at least you got 20 seconds of levitation out of that. And I suppose I will use 5 volts with some resistors, thanks for your help.
