If you use different combinations of red, green, and blue laser beams using mirrors and beamsplitters, you can make it any color you want by controlling the intensity of each color beam. In fact, I think someone did an instructable on this... But changing a red pointer to green would be a lot of work and (insert music from PSYCHO) math...

why green? Wouldn't it be yellow? (if they had yellow ones)

They use the color green in projected light instead of the color yellow in paint or pigments. The red/green/blue (RGB) in light is called additive light color blending/mixing. The color yellow is used in subtractive color blending/mixing. When a red light and a green light shine on a white wall and overlap, you get the color yellow (I know, it's weird). While mixing red and green paint, because the are complementary colors, they make grey. And yes, they do sell yellow laser pointers (They're an arm and a leg). I hope I helped answer your question....

Nope, different types of diodes.

Agreed, unless of course you switched the most important part with a green diode. But that would just be ridiculous.
