deck baluster

We finally have to finish a deck rail - I need an inexpensive idea for balusters or something that won't completely obstruct my view. I don't like the 2x2's, or lattice. I do like the look of aluminum/metal in plain black - either square or flat - but hate the thought of spending $250 just for the balusters. I love the look of balcony panels - but getting a plasma cut piece of metal for each section is way way more than I want to spend. I'm looking for the dirt cheap alternative.

One could use the wooden craft balls and some dowels to make an effect like this:

Unless all this stuff is PT or metal/plastic... the mid-atlantic weather will make it look ugly quick.

thanks for the idea, tho!
Well, the original was iron,  but I suppose one could make it out of nearly anything,  or do a really good job coating wood :-)

What style are you looking for?  I designed a custom railing for the front patio on our old house, to have kind of an "Arts and Crafts" feel.  Here's a PDF with the design, and following pages breaking out the components and assembly steps.  The length dimensions for each panel would obviously depend on your particular deck :-)

I like your plans... and may modify them to work w/PT :)

Thank you!  Good luck with your project, and please -- take pictures and post and Instructable to show us what you've done!

How long of rail do you have to fill in?  Do you have to worry that it will be to building code or safe for kids?  You might try tempered glass, plexiglas panels, pvc pipe, metal pipe, rope, steel cable, logs, bamboo stalks, branches, rebar rods if you don't mind the rust or want to paint, etc.........

...or fishnet, for that sea-going look....

Sea-going look?  Why was "red light district" the first thing I associated with fishnet?
Must be your "upbringing" and environment ;-)
