'ible points

I have a new idea for a simple ranking system on instructables.
The system would use points, you would get points for doing things around the site.

A few examples of what rewards points:
Using Instructables. The more you use Instructables, the more points you get.
Using our Forums system.
Creating Instructions.
Using a premium Membership.
Recruit friends into our Membership program.
Adding and verifying your email address in Settings.
Donations.
View count.
Medallion scheme.

A few examples of the points you would get:

Using Instructables. The more you use Instructables, the more points you get. (every hour on the site actively would get you 0.1 points)

Using our Forums system.                                                                       (Your total posts are divided by 100 when converted into 'ible points).

Creating Instructions.               (for every instructable posted you would get 5 points and if the 'ible got featured you would get 25 points)

Using a PRO Membership.                                                                                             (A PRO membership would give you 50 points)

Adding and verifying your email address in Settings.                                                            (This would get you 20 points)

Donations.                                                                                        (each donation would get you a certain amount depending on the size)

View count.                                                                                        (Your view count is divided by 10 and the result i the points you get)

Medallion scheme.          (If you have a bronze medal you would get one point, silver medals would get you two points and a gold medal would get you three points.)

The points could be displayed near the medallions as a shield or similar.

Would this idea work and i so could it lease be considered by the editors?

i like kudos based on other folks appraisal of quality. the "favorite" tag... people "following" you. Winning a contest, or being featured. Number of posts etc doesnt generally reflect quality.

Right, that is what a few other people said.

I put those things up as ideas so the dev team wouldn't have to wok so hard to think of a reward.

It would be a great addition in my opinion and the baseline shield could be a bronze one for joining the site!

I still can't see the value the idea adds to my experience of the site.

Apart from a badge on my profile, what do I gain?

Aw come on, read my post below.

"I guess this one is ended now, if you want to see a community where it works head down the page to the link I posted, they make it work well there and that is where I got the idea."

Seriously? Ask them what it adds to their community and then please call this topicended.

I was asking you because you brought it up.

I'd been considering it, looked at the other site, but still didn't get it. You, however, seemed to believe in the idea, so I thought there was something I was missing. But, if you want to drop it, that's up to you.

"So I thought there was something I was missing"

I enjoy virtual rewards and virtual goals as well as normal goals/rewards.

It helps motivate me to do stuff like finding geocaches to get more points.

My most recent lack of motivation is shewed in my shoelace 'ible.

I have two same 'ibles teaching you how to do different styles - they are written in the same manner yet the second one didn't get featured.

That is enough that I won't be making any more 'ibles on shoelaces! I had a motivator and now is is lost completely - I tried to fix it twice and I have now moved on.

Maybe if there was an extra achievement I would get then I would spend more and more time trying to get stuff featured.

Ah, motivation. I see more clearly now.

My personal motivation is just to be able to share*, to know that my work is "out there" for folk to see and use if they want. After that, a constructive comment is worth more to me than several hundred views. Points, views, medals etc are OK, but I keep "score" in the satisfaction of a completed project prepared and shared.

(* I pre-date the internet, and lacked the ability to share widely for most of my life.)

ahem, https://www.instructables.com/id/The-Pointless-Switch/ Now that is what this community is about...

Points, schmoints. Show me the money...

There was once a discussion of ibles bucks one deserved based on that criteria... You ignore the open source feel-good hippy anti-materialistic tenets that this site was founded on ...ok, Autodesk runs it now but...nevermind.

Wow, there is a lot more to building a website like this than I expected.

I guess this one is ended now, if you want to see a community where it works head down the page to the link I posted, they make it work well there and that is where I got the idea.
