internship wanted

I am looking for someone near livermore, CA who is offering an internship. I am available over this upcoming summer and next school year will be a junior in high school. I am smart and have a lot of useful skills. If you have an opportunity post a comment on this post and i will send you a message.

note: it has to be within 30 min, unless you can give me a ride

High school junior? Are you 16 yet? State and federal child labor laws make it extremely difficult (read "impossible") to offer internships, even unpaid ones, to anyone under 16. OSHA regulations make it difficult to offer laboratory experience to anyone under 18.

At SLAC, we had to abandon a program to bring high-school students in for summer research opportunities because of this.

Have you looked at the Web sites for the large number of companies within half an hour of Livermore? It's more work for you, but you might get better response if you contact some of those companies directly. If you have an area of interest, focus on that and use company Web sites to identify managers for direct contact. Otherwise, go through HR (Human Resources) departments to see if they have opportunities.

i have looked at the websites for companies, but companies stick to the 18 rule for ease in hiring. I am 15 and was looking for maybe something that would provide more of a learning opportunity than pay.

You could try contacting the folks at LLNL and see if they have managed to work around the issues that got us stuck at SLAC.

Do you know if Chabot/Las Positas has an internship office? Even if you're not enrolled there, those folks are more likely to have contacts with specific names.

LLNL internships are for post secondary school students, and chabot and las positas don't have any information for anyone but students and alumni.

Urgh. I'm sorry that I can't give you more specific advice. It sounds like you have done a lot of research on this, and it's pretty disappointing :-( I've got a few colleagues who work at LLNL; I'll send them e-mail and see if they know anything I don't.

.....and then they wonder why there is a "shortage" of science graduates. (unless you have an H1B)

"They" are marginally more sensible here. I have an annual inspection by an external contractor to me and the local education authorities, and then I can take on a couple of kids for work experience, even in the shop, provided they don't weld.

Things may be different because SLAC is a government lab, not a private company. When we tried to start a high-school student program a few years ago, we could not bring in anyone under 16, and the older students could only work in an "office" setting (i.e., using a computer for data analysis or programming :-().
