key-style "blooming" trinket box?

Hey guys!

  I want to make an oval-shaped box that slowly "blooms" when I wind it up with a key. I have absolutely no idea where to start. I've scoured google over and over again for such an object, but to no avail. :(  Could anyone point me in the right direction? I'm desperate.

Not exactly, but that IS pretty awesome! :)

Something more like the container for the potion in "death becomes her" (The 4-piece shell that falls open when she unties the ribbon.)

But I want to be able to open it with a key and have it slowly open. :)
