light gauge metal bending machine

Well I have searched now for 2 days or so here and on the net for something like this. Does anyone have link to a plan ? free or otherwise ? Thanks Quadranut President of the TNITK Association

I found an amazing open source wire bending machine designed by a group called Pensa..
I bet with a little tinkering this basic set up could bend metal strips like an automatic bending machine used in die making.

Anyone who does sheetmetal work would laugh at it, but Harbor Freight sells a metal brake on the cheap (they also sell more capable versions...)

Do you need to bend round tubing in small diameters like a pipe/tubing bender that plumbers or electricians use for metal conduit (about 2" dia aluminum/copper) or need to bend sheet metal like roofers use for window flashing(up to 40" wide)? Those metal brake machines can be costly. They are made from thick aluminum extrusion rails or cast iron angle stock. They are simple enough in design that they clamp a piece of stock and rotate on a piano hinge with long handles for leverage to bend the metal. Then there is also other jigs you can copy that bend metal for fancy scrollwork like iron gates or such. The metalsmiths on this site will have ideas.

How big of a piece are you working with, and how think is it, and is it steel or aluminum ? For some of the small stuff it might be, as much as I hate to say it, cheaper to buy a bender then it is to make one, unless you have the material handy ...
If I could remember the mechanism a metal bender uses or look at one I might be of more use, I can think of a few ways to do this, maybe even creating a pretty strong machine...
