proximity TO EACH OTHER sensors?

I've seen several instructables for creating proximity sensors that will detect anything, but I want sensors that will detect only each other.  Basically, I want to have LEDs inside tiny toys that will light when the toys are near each other, then fade and turn off as they are separated.  Can anybody point me in the right direction?  Thanks.

IR range sensors are usually angled, so that the light reflects from emitter to detector when there is an obstacle close.

If you change the set-up, make the emitter and detector parallel, maybe they would not detect the other toy, but only the other toy's light.

If you see what I mean?

Oh, you meant when they see the infrared light, they turn on the regular light, didn't you? *smacks self*

IR can pass through thin fabric, right?  Pretty much anything a normal light can show through?
I would think so...

You could test by trying to work a TV remote through a scrap.

Actually I don't see what you mean. If they are detecting the light, but the light isn't on until it's been detected, then there's no light for them to detect. Also, wouldn't they detect anything with a light, not only each other?

I was thinking more like they each have an RFID or something, but I can't find a tutorial on how to use those for small size, simple things.
