question? can I upgrade amp hour electric scooter battery

I have a taotao ATE 501 electric scooter that has 4 12v 10ah batteries. 500W motor. Can I upgrade to 12v 24ah batteries without harming the motor? Thank you very much

IF the batteries are the same chemistry as the old ones (LiIon, NiMH, lead-acid etc), IF they can provide the same peak current as the old ones and if they fit, then it should work fine.

- If they aren't the same chemistry then the charger may damage them and potentially cause a leak or explosion.

- If they can't provide as much current as the originals then the scooter will run more slowly, and the batteries may overheat and again fail, leak or explode.

- If they don't fit... you'll have to cut a hole in the side :)

Whatever happens, the motor should be fine.  Hope that helps!

IIRC, the motor will only draw the power it needs, and since both sets of batteries are rated at 12v, there shouldn't be a problem that I know of. But then, I have been known to be wrong on occasion also :-)
