I think its a good prize, certainly worth putting a couple of hours work into a project for. If you dont want the prize, nobody is forcing you to enter the competition. Sure, there have been better prizes offered for other competitions, but that doesnt mean anything (unless they were a representation of how much work members are putting into their entries? This competition after-all isnt meant to have hugly complicated entries, as it runs off elastic bands). If the staff think its a good prize, then I'm siding with them as they know what is best for the site.

So? Its a hundred dollars ($20 per book) that I/ the winner doesn't have to spend. There's nothing wrong with it.

The value to the instructables team isn't the price of the prize (they don't even get the prizes), but the increased activity on instructables. I forget which staff member it was, but one of them mentioned how the contests are what really inspire some of the best projects. So in that sense, as long as the prize gets people working, it's worth it.

There is also the kudos of having your project in a Klutz book.

Why do you care? Is it coming out of your pocket? Also, I'm going to call a [citation needed] on that price of pennies per book production cost. Plus, what do you _want_ them to give away? A million dollars? :-D I mean, it's like nothing's good enough. Here's an opportunity to get free things, and it's not enough? Or is your concern that the staff is getting ripped off? If that's your worry, I think you can rest assured that they know what they're doing.

. Is that anything like looking a gift horse in the mouth?
Apr 11, 2009. 8:24 AMGoodhart says:
Yes, it if VERY much like say: Hey, if you are giving me a gift, don't give me a book, give me an Automobile or something equally or more expensive

Why would someone think they could mandate what another has as a prize? Unless they felt obligated to enter......ut oh, something does not looked balanced about that.... ;-)

Klutz books are cool, and they are usually about $10- $20. Getting 5 free books is awesome, also why do you care if Klutz gets popular?
