tv tuner and videolan

i try to setup a computer to record tv broadcasts (from tv tuner card) to file. the computer runs videolan and windows xp sp2

if i open videoln and go to file - open device or run this from the run
c:\vlc\vlc.exe dshow:// :dshow-vdev="Conexant BtPCI Capture" :dshow-adev="RealtekAC97 Audio" :dshow-size="640X480"

it shows the video and sound ok (without record)

if i run this
c:\vlc\vlc.exe dshow:// :dshow-vdev="Conexant BtPCI Capture" :dshow-adev="RealtekAC97 Audio" :dshow-size="640X480" --sout file/avi:temp.avi

if its something short (up to 1 min) the saved file is ok in the beginning and then sound is distorted

if its longer videolan crashes and saves nothing

if i run something like
c:\vlc\vlc.exe dshow:// :dshow-vdev="Conexant BtPCI Capture" :dshow-adev="RealtekAC97 Audio" :dshow-size="640X480" --sout "#transcode{vcodec=mp1v,vb=800,scale=1,acodec=mp3,ab=256,channels=2}:duplicate{dst=std{access=file,mux=ts,dst=temp.mpg}}"

it shows the video and sound (as in the 1st example) but does not make any file

how can i save with vlc in good quality (suitable for movies) and good quality (bu not one that fills up the hard drive for one movie) codec like mpeg4 etc ?

I used AV to S-video cable to record tv shows on the pc.Here is the procedure if you dont mind.

1.Connect the AV cable to the Tv or Set tob Box.
2.Connect the ni8ne pin plug to the computer video card.
3. Open windows movie maker on the pc.
4.Click on Capture from video device.
5.It will Start recording.

If you want good quality use another software to convert the videos.

Note- 1.One minute video consumes 14mb on the hard disk. Therefore it is wise to use an external hard disk incase you want to record long videos.
2-remember to on the tv and the pc !!!
3-If you have a Cable tv Use a good quality tv tuner card.

If you are unhappy with my comment please go to  you will get a better information about this stuff.

. See section 4 of my FAQ on text formatting for your code snippets. [[]code] and <code> don't work here. :(

fixed. thanks
. heehee Looks like you need to insert some manual line feeds. Wrap it somewhere near the first occurrence of "Realtek". Formatting on Ibles can be a PITA sometimes. :(
