And thanks to the organisers. I had a lot of fun with this, and will certainly be contributing again.

Way to go Cammers! Tough competition. Yours is the only entry for the common man, those who can afford bacon but not electricity, who live in Bacon Town. I can't imagine those guys whooping it up on caviar and truffles, handing out roses or with a Van Gogh on the wall. That is pure decadence.
May 16, 2011. 7:31 PMcammers says:
Hahaha. Thanks Chuck. I'm stoked to even get into the finals. In hindsight, perhaps I should have made a bacon powered crystal chandelier.

You know, saying "no offense" doesn't necessarily help if you then go on and say something potentially offensive like "useless" and "wasting". I would agree that using food in this way is a controversial subject but nonetheless I find all of these non-food projects strangely intriguing.

As my own instructable will be pointing out, with a small amount of research you would find that bacon IS actually healthy for you. Far, far more healthy than say shredded wheat, cheerios, etc. Go to the USDA.Gov website, and look at the statistics for heart disease, strokes, obesity, diabetes, and saturated fat intake. You'll see a very interesting pattern.

I have to agree with several others. No problem if you don't like bacon or lard, but leave those who do to enjoy it, otherwise sorry, you are just sound like a nag.

All your rational arguments against bacon are meaningless. You just don't 'get' bacon. That's okay, I suppose there is a tiny fraction of people who don't love bacon in all of it's sizzling porcine glory. Have a banana! I suppose you'd also hate my Bacon Love page on FB too. BaconSalt's pretty good - makes stuff taste like Bacon, but is permitted for vegetarians and by faiths that don't approve of pig-meat. Though Bacon, with BaconSalt on it can be dangerously Pigging Out!

99% of people on earth love bacon and its even better when it involves DIY. Besides, I don't like knitting but I don't judge them for having knitting contests.
Apr 17, 2011. 5:31 PMfunchy says:
Bacon is not in the diet of Jews, Muslims, most Hindus, most Buddists, Seventh-Day Adventists, all vegetarians/vegans, and anyone on a "heart healthy" diet. And that doesn't include people who find it just plain greasy and distasteful.

Please keep in mind the high-processed-meat diet is primarily an American thing. America: the most obese nation. The top three killers of adult Americans are cancer, stroke, and heart disease. All three of these have a strong dietary component. A diet high in saturated fat boosts cholesterol/triglycerides, is a major risk factor for arteriosclerosis, and sets up the body for clots (heart attack or stroke).
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/002468.htm

A high-meat (esp processed meat) diet is probably the #1 risk factor for colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is only second to lung cancer in the number of Americans it kills.
http://www.health.harvard.edu/fhg/updates/Red-meat-and-colon-cancer.shtml

The lack of fiber in a high processed meat diet makes peristalsis (movement down through the digestive tract) slow and less efficient. The market to treat constipation / bowel irregularity is a multi billion dollar industry.

And yet... we keep promoting bacon. Why?
May 6, 2011. 1:23 AMmookiemueller says:
Because it's delicious
Apr 25, 2011. 2:22 PMWhiternoise says:
Actually it vastly depends on the type of bacon you eat.

In the UK, most of the bacon sold is back bacon. It has that characteristic oval of meat with the little stem at the bottom. Americans, mostly, only eat streaky bacon. This comes from the belly of the pig and contains far less meat, much more rind and is generally bad for you. Back bacon is sold as Irish or Canadian bacon in the 'States as far as I know.

Streaky bacon is sold in the UK too, but we usually use it as an ingredient for cooking, so things like pigs in blankets, covering roast poultry or chopped up in sauces. If you want bacon to have on toast, you go for back bacon every time simply because you get more meat out of it.

Streaky bacon is about 1/2 fat by content, Back Bacon is about 1/10th fat.

http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/pork-products/2212/2
http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/pork-products/2208/2

So that's the clincher, Americans tend to eat a much, much fattier type of meat. In most other bacon eating countries, leaner back bacon is more popular.

We promote bacon because we like the taste of it. Like just about anything, fatty foods are fine in moderation. It is a contextual problem. If you only eat fatty foods, of course you're going to drop dead at 50. If you lead a balanced lifestyle, do exercise regularly and eat plenty of greens, then by all means chow down on a bit of pig when you want to.

Apr 24, 2011. 11:31 AMStuNutt says:
Go back up a few spaces to my reply to Scoochmaroo's comment. If you don't like the "dietary belief" aspect, or the physical health aspect, but wonder if you might like the taste if it were more religiously accepetable or healthy, do give BaconSalt a try. It really does add bacon flavour to scrambled eggs, baked potatoes, Mac cheese, - really just about anything!

All 8 of the different varieties are vegetarian and Kosher-certified, and the "Hickory" is even Vegan. It's a "synthesised" flavour made from herbs and spices but (as a confirmed pork-lover!) it really does taste "the biz". It's also a lot faster to prepare if you feel like a cheese and bacon sandwich, but are in too much of a hurry to cook, then just shake it on!
Apr 21, 2011. 6:11 PMsuperc74 says:

bacon isn't bad for you... http://paleodietlifestyle.com/for-the-love-of-bacon/

there's a lost worse stuff anyway -
Apr 19, 2011. 4:18 AMVastMagick says:
I find this racist since I've known Jews and Buddists that love bacon and J&D probably has a few people that don't eat real bacon but love the taste (which, to me, is pretty much the same as loving bacon).

But if we are pointing out all those that don't include bacon in their diet then what about most babies?

As for relating high-meat diets to colorectal cancer, arn't you going off topic? Just because someone likes (or even loves) bacon doesn't make them fat, nor does it mean they are on a high-meat diet. And if we are linking possible causes of types of cancer as bad then do you live underground to avoid the sun? Because by this logic the sun is bad since it is a probable cause of skin cancer.

Now the attack on the constipation industry is just funny. There are many industries out there that people don't like (Medical Industry, Oil Industry, Tobacco Industry, etc) but I don't think , and I could be wrong, that many consider the constipation industry as a bloated evil group. (Shoot, I don't even think you can find any actual proof of it being a multi-billion dollar industry without actually laying the ground work for collecting the data)

So to make a long response short, they keep promoting bacon because there is a large fan base for bacon with the instructables readers.
Apr 24, 2011. 11:39 AMStuNutt says:
VastMagick - I think funchy means that bacon and pork is NOT SUPPOSED to be in the diet of Jews, Buddists and Moslems, not that none of them ever eat the "forbidden meat". That's hardly a racist comment.

I'm a practicing Christian and I have a few people who are very good friends who are Muslim. I like my bacon and they prefer, on faith grounds, not to even try it. There's room i the world for all of us, and for all peaceful opinions.

May He be with you!

This is the way I want to live, So if you would be so kind to pack up your lettuce and GTFO.
