Doesn't seem very fair at all to change parameters right at the end of eligibility. Extending the deadline, I can see, but the project I have been busting my behind on finishing hardly has anything in common with toys!

It's like having a competition to create a salad and then opening up the contest to include mixed drinks.

We still want to see your structure! But when we see a lack of entries in a contest, we interpret that as lack of interest. To brighten things up, we decided to open up the playing field to snag more enthusiasm from a wider playing field. We have no way of knowing what awesome projects you've been slaving away at that are sure to surprise us in the 11th hour. But don't fear - the amount of time and care you put into these projects is always apparent, and we appreciate the crazy building efforts you've put forth.

Perhaps in future, you should have a button to register an interest in a competition ?

ohh i like that, Kinda like an HEy there im working hard to be apart of this Button. Good thinking

do they tell you if it wasnt accepted? I got an e-mail saying i had been entered but it was being moderated. I havent been put in the contest yet so i was just wondering

I entered my project on March 4 (and I am sure I meet the criteria), but it is still not visible here. I find this a little unfair since the voting has already started and only lasts until March 8... Does anybody else have the same problem?
Mar 7, 2011. 2:52 AMMikenik says:
My entry is on the website, but not in the contest area, although I did enter it...

Mar 7, 2011. 4:46 AMannahowardshaw says:
That seems to be how it goes. Mine isn't up either, but as long as you got the e-mail that your entry was received, it will show up sometime today.
Votes are not the only criteria they use so I doubt it will have any impact...especially since the Dutch Scenery is super-cute : )
Mar 4, 2011. 7:12 AMannahowardshaw says:
Just checking which is correct...this page says the deadline is 11:59pm PST, Mar. 6, but the Contests page says midnight March 5.
Feb 18, 2011. 12:50 PMannahowardshaw says:
Huh. Changing the dates and rules a few days before a contest ends? I certainly would not have spent so long on an entry to meet the contest requirements by the deadline if I knew that would happen.

I get that there haven't been many entries yet (knitting a structure takes a long time) so extending the dates is reasonable. But completely changing the parameters doesn't seem very fair.

Did anyone else knit some silly structure...only for this contest...and plan to put it up this weekend?
Feb 20, 2011. 6:43 AMlizzyastro says:
Yes, I have been working on a particular BUILD with yarn project for this. I do appreciate extending the deadline as it gives me time to be sure I will complete this, but changing the rules (ie opening it up to toys) seems unfair when many of us have tried to ensure that we met the "build with yarn" parameter.

I'm sorry - we had no way of knowing what you were working on! By looking at the low number of entries, it seemed pretty clear that people didn't like the theme, and extending the contest deadline wouldn't do much good if people weren't inspired by the topic. :(

We're trying to do the right thing, and keep the contest fun for everyone. I'd love any suggestions you may have - feel free to PM me!

By the way, the Lion Brand judges will be particularly thrilled to see projects that meet the original "build with yarn" challenge, so never fear!
Mar 2, 2011. 6:31 AMkrysteanuh says:
Why not add a separate prize category for those that made toys? That way, each side wins, and no one is disappointed.
Feb 21, 2011. 11:16 PMannahowardshaw says:
I really liked the theme...it was something that one wouldn't normally think about doing and the Coney Island inspiration for it is awesome. But knitting something even vaguely along those lines is a time consuming endeavor. Right off the bat, it is going to be something that there isn't a pattern for, so that adds to planning/design time. Even when it was first announced I had to scale down my first ideas because there was no way to complete them by the original deadline (and there is an excellent chance that the structure could end up more appropriately entered in the Monster contest).

Totally get that the low numbers seemed to indicate little interest and a potential poor showing for a contest, but couldn't you have extended the deadline and just added a post asking people to drop you a note if they were submitting a project? If there were no responses, then give the 6 existing entrants a t-shirt or something and then expand.

Opening it to toys seemed unfair to the structure builders, and now adding that the Lion judges would really like those that fit the original theme may dissuade some from entering toys. So maybe it evens out...?

I realize that this is an odd topic to go on about. I am actually excited about the contest and to see the entries everyone is working on (and am fine with more time to finish up my own thing!). The bigger concern is how Instructables will address this issue should it come up again. Every time enrollment is slow, should we be worried that the criteria for that contest will change?

Sorry to be a pain! Hope my excessive comments demonstrate that I really dig the site, but am kind of an easily flustered stickler : )

I have been working very hard on a project to enter into this contest as well. Planned to have it finished this weekend to publish. I do appreciate the extension of the deadline since I am just learning to knit and it is taking me a LONG time to complete =)

Can't wait to see what the creative Instructables community has to offer for this contest.

I agree with extending the deadline but adding toys that is a whole other thing. I really wish they would have just left it opened to the original theme instead of adding toys. I whipped up a toy to add to insure my chances. I guess they will have more entries now that they opened it up to toys.
Feb 21, 2011. 5:31 PMcanida says:
Aw, he's cute!
Feb 18, 2011. 5:13 PMYarnabees says:
I agree with annhowardshaw adding a new category "Toys" doesn't seem fair.
What kind of toys? Stuffed toys like teddy bears, bunnies, cars, Dino's???? I guess I will be crocheting something else to help my chances.
Feb 15, 2011. 3:50 PMDELETED_jorgegunn says:
I hate to be a debbie downer but i have been looking at some of the entries and it seems like most of them are just pictures with no real instructions on how they are made. Which is fine because they are all beautiful but i worry that they dont quite meet the "Submit a new Instructable that shows how to build something with yarn" requirement. Of course i might be miss understanding the rules but i would hate for someone to not be considered because of this.
Feb 16, 2011. 9:52 AMkatietes says:
I haven't signed on to instructables for ages, but I noticed that there's a new kind of instructable where you just post pictures of what you made, even if you don't have a tutorial to go with it. I know the project I'm working on is kind of a one-time thing and might be tricky for someone to replicate-- is it worth creating a step by step instructable, or could I just do the photo thing? You're right-- it would suck to not be considered...
Feb 16, 2011. 12:42 PMDELETED_jorgegunn says:
Im just another user i dont know how the contest is being judge i was kinda hoping someone would know. However the rules said subit and instructable that shows how to build something. On that note if you made it im sure everyone who works with fiber would love to see it so by all means put up some pictures I know i would love to see it. My Post was merely to raise the question and in hopes that those who had posted justed pictures would have the opprotunity to add more to them dependent on the what the contest mediators said. I guesse we will just have to hang on and wait for what they have to say maybe one of them will respond. But just again it never hurts to try and im sure your project will be lovely and i cant wait to see it.
Feb 16, 2011. 4:31 PMkatietes says:
Thanks for your input! Since all the entries have to be approved before they get posted here, I'm going to assume that the photo-only instructable is accepted. When I follow the "submit a new instructable" link at the top of this page, I can choose between photos, step by step, and video, so hopefully the photos are fine. Is there a mod that could clarify this? I'm very excited about my project and am madly knitting to finish it up before the 20th!!

also look up loom knitting its super easy and you can make your own with a variety of materials i have one made with wood and nails but ive seen some made from coffee cans. That would help you if you needed some big patches of material.
