These were mine: quick and basic: red velvet, blue icing, and white fondant stars. I think I should have put on more stars and/or not spread the icing out as far.

Does anyone know if there is a kind of candy that is in the shape of stars? I'd love to skip the fondant rolling and cutting step next time.

I've seen yellow star sprinkles in the cake decorating section. The stars are a little smaller than this, so I am afraid it won't help for this particular design, but perhaps for others. We use them as tree-toppers when we decorate cut-out Christmas cookies.

Jul 3, 2011. 9:55 PMiminthebathroom says:
It can take a little while for these contests, judges are volunteers from the instructable community, there votes are weighed in conjunction with staff and sponsors. Life intervenes sometimes and delays are to be expected. It will be announced soon enough. Trust me, just as eager but I know these things take time. Use this time to try one of the other recipes out in the contest, bring up one page of entries, close your eyes and touch the screen, knowing that when you open your eyes you have to make what you touched, can be fun.

I'd like to thank everyone that responded to my last post. Your kind and encouraging words mean a lot to me.

I'm not on this site solely for the contests, and I'm certainly not here with the expectation of winning them. However, I joined this site after a friend recommended it to me, and I hoped to use the contests as a way to gain practice for competitions. I suppose that cheaters exist everywhere, but my hope was to find a place where the judging was fair and unbiased, and where the winner was determined on skill more than just popularity.

What bothered me the most was that it seemed the Instructables site administrators knew about the cheating but wouldn't take steps to disqualify the cheater immediately. I know it takes a lot of time to do so, but I would hope that keeping a site of integrity would be worth the time. Another way to handle the problem is to track IP addresses so that people can't have multiple accounts.

These are just my thoughts and opinions and I thank you for giving me a place to voice them.

A lot has happened since my original post, and I now know that the administrators of this site share the same vision I do for Instructables. We all want it to be a fun place to go to learn from one another and a place to help one another become better people! I think I'll stick around for a while. :)

*sigh* After reading the hundreds of comments on this post, I now understand why the hard work I put into making my entries apparently means squat. They started off rated very highly (one was even profiled as an editor's favorite) and then crashed and burned on the rating scale. I couldn't figure out why everyone hated my creations so much. I truly cried over it because I'm a culinary student... for people to think my decorating skills are that awful hurt me beyond words.

I truly wish I could find a website where HONEST people could enter AUTHENTIC (not stolen from someone else's blog or photo album) creations and be judged FAIRLY on them.
I guess I'm living in a butterfly and lollipop-dream filled world...

I hope you all enjoy this site and I wish you the best of luck with this and future contests. I'll be cancelling my account and do not plan to participate in this site again.
Jul 2, 2011. 1:04 AMChirpoff says:
I so understand. I am an artist, and I have entered several things that I think would have been liked, had there been a different system, but didn't receive what I was hoping for. I am, like you, really disappointed, because I don't have a bunch of online buds to vote on my latest creations, but like IITB said, we visited for the 'ibles, we joined for more fun!

Although I myself am looking at the contests and the site in a different way, I have a whole lot to gain by just visiting, searching, and 'ibling, and I really hope you do continue on with this site, for your benefit, as well as others.

Keep up the great work fulfilling your dream as a culinary artist!
Jul 1, 2011. 5:58 AMiminthebathroom says:
That's sad. Try to remember though, most of us came to this site for the instructables. The shared knowledge created by this great community. I didn't even really notice the contests for about a year. Sure I have entered a whack of them, but if they stopped that tomorrow I would still be logging in daily. The contests are a perk of this site, not the reason to be a member. On every site there will be a few jerks, that goes with the territory.
Jul 12, 2011. 12:26 PMCatTrampoline says:
It's like that with everything. My husband, son & I took up archery 7 years ago for fun. We entered some supposedly low-key, fun local competions and were appalled by the rampant cheating. We finally quit entering the contests but continued with the sport until the range closed down. When we get the chance we'll shoot again and continue with our friendly family competitions. Ooooh - that would make a good instructable!

I've been logging in to this site, getting inspired, making stuff, and will eventually start posting the half-written instructibles that I have in my "to-do" pile. Inspiring each other to create is what it is all about - just dedicate Taylor Swift's "Mean" to all the jerks out there and keep on creating!
Jun 29, 2011. 1:29 PMLingCullen says:
Oy now, dont just quit cause the system sucks. Its not all about winning.... Your projects are awesome, and you can tell that you are being trained in what you do. In my opinion that is what this website is lacking... we need more people who know what they are doing to make great instructables.

What would gordon ramsey say about your quitting attitude? ;)

I would hate to see talented instructables people leaving...

We will miss you if you close your account. Where is your blog, so we can continue to follow you...

I got rated low too for my cupcake project. It is the second instructable I ever posted and I felt sad about it.

But I have been coming to instructables for years and have been inspired by so many different ideas contributed by different people. This site really help me. It is a really nice place, only a few people's immature action make it bad sometimes. There are so many people participating it is hard to make sure everyone is playing the game fair. I am sure instructable is working hard to make this place better every day.

Good, I am so glad you are on this. Everyone seems to understand who is the person trying to "fix" this contest for herself. I understand she is young, and she needs to learn this lesson quickly. She is obviously a talented young girl, but these tactics are not right in any way, especially encouraging others to create several fake accounts to help her in these endeavors (note the comment above in this dialogue, by the person who Googled her name and found her Twitter post encouraging people to create fake accounts). I think the girl needs to be called out and told she can't do this any more.

Jun 23, 2011. 1:02 AMofficerlee says:
The person who kept rating everyone else's down and the ones that she liked up (including her own!) was the user phoebeloew123.

I noticed hers and about 7 others kept shooting to the top of the ratings anytime I refreshed the page for several days so I confronted her on it and, this is the response I got: "I can only rate each entry once so its not like i'm significantly lowering their chances. And anyways ratings don't matter and i'll have you know that I voted 0.5 for every single entry in this contest! And the only reason I made different account and rated a couple of them good is because someone keeps rating those ugly ones high and mine are better!  I really really want to win this. I spent forever editing my videos and baking and I really think I deserve this. I think that if people see my entries as some of the top ones then they'll vote for me."

>:-(

Jun 23, 2011. 3:29 PMmary candy says:
I even knew, but wanted to say nothing...
I did see 28 people had rated me 0.5 and 28 people had rated her 5*.

Nobody makes something hopping not win something.
Everyone does their best they can.
At least I do it.

Don't worry, CeruleanPhoenix... I don't think she will win...
Jun 23, 2011. 12:46 PMoneprimalscream says:
Wow. When I saw mine were at the top, and then getting bumped down a few pages, and then getting back to the top within minutes, I kind of thought something funky was going on. But...I was constantly posting my entries on my Facebook page (which was over 1,700 friends) as well as sharing it with my coworkers and classmates. I guess it never crossed my mind that someone would be taking the time to sabotage the contest.

Now I feel kinda sad that the only reason my cupcakes had a good rating is because someone was sabotaging the entire contest except for a few entries! :-\
Jun 23, 2011. 4:03 PMQueenOfMyOwnDomain says:

you guys are right. holy crap! lol. mine used to be on the 1st page, now it's almost 100 spots back. i got super-attacked. that's horrible. i get really excited about good ratings, no matter the situation, because it's a reflection of what people think of your work. makes you smile! :) anyways, amazing work, guys! maybe a magic robot will wave a wand and set the ratings back. and ban a certain ip address. haha

Do a Google search on her user name and you'll see her Twitter account which says:

PLEASE VOTE 4'HOW TO MAKE AN OCEAN OF CUPCAKES'&'HOW TO MAKE PIGGY CUPCAKES'JUST MAKE AN ACCOUNT (FREE) FAKE EMAILS R OK

While I believe we should call out people when they cheat, this is a case of a kid who did work hard on a pretty good video. She did something dumb and mean to try to defend her work (which of course, just hurt it). We've all done thoughtless things, realize it's not constructive, and learn from it.

I hope she continues to create Instructables, especially since it is something she obviously cares a great deal about, but does not focus so much on winning that she attacks other people who care just as much.

Concerning the fake account loop hole itself, I think the easiest way to minimize fraudulent accounts would be to only have ratings/voting functionality for Pro members. No idea what kind of impact that would have on the community, so it may not be a feasible option.

Otherwise, some really specific site monitoring metrics could be used to see new user activity (spike in registration around contest voting phases, vote/rating distribution of new users). The staff may already have something like this but there could be so much to shift through that it is hard to catch as it happens.

Jun 23, 2011. 12:27 PMsunshiine says:
Well said! Everyone did such a great job on their cupcakes! Did you see how many were featured? This is going to be a difficult contest to judge. That is what I like about instructables, there are so many talented people here! Most of the members are fair, polite, and a joy to connect with.

Thank you everyone for sharing!
