Hey Instructables Judges. You sure do know how to build the suspense don't you! Every time I think we're finally going to get to see who won, you push the deadline back another day!!! Your killing me here!
Dec 2, 2011. 2:50 PMpastprimitive says:
At least we can feel good about knowing they care enough to take the time to do it right. Much preferred to just randomly picking winners to rush and meet a deadline.
Dec 2, 2011. 3:03 PMpastprimitive says:
Curiously enough... Does someone usually post here to notify when the winners will be announced, or is it usually a surprise thing after the judging ends? Sorry to any instructables staff if this is obnoxious. I feel like a kid at christmas time waiting to see if I got what I asked for.

Seriously excited about being a finalist. I'm not anticipating winning but man would I get an insane amount of use out of this machine. I currently pay to have laser cutting done all the time. Something of this value should be shared and if I have the honor of winning this machine I would love to make it available to all my fellow prop builders as much as possible. The more the community shares the more it grows and I think that's really what Instructibles is all about. Regardless of the outcome, thanks Instructibles for making these amazing contests available to the community. I know we all appreciate the opportunity to participate.

Thanks, I probably won't go back to an previous projects due to their incomplete documentation but I am planning on posting all my projects going forward. So much of what I know I have learned from studying other peoples work. And it seems only right to try and share that knowledge and experience with everyone else.
Nov 25, 2011. 10:30 AMInducktion says:
I don't understand... I got more views than several of these instructables WITHOUT being added on hackaday, gizmodo, or any of those other websites... I could say the same thing about other instructables too.

How come it's not in the finalists?
Nov 29, 2011. 10:37 PMTaterToterson says:
Your assuming that your number of votes is directly related to the number of views which is not really the case. There are in fact over 20 instructables with 30,000+ views that also aren't finalists. While you do in fact have a better chance of getting more votes as your views go up, that does not guarantee added votes. It all comes down to whether or not people thought highly enough of your instructable to vote for it when comparing it to other entries. Just some food for thought.
Nov 30, 2011. 8:41 PMdaveda says:
It would be nice if we could see the number of votes cast for every instructable, wouldn't it?
Nov 30, 2011. 10:20 PMpastprimitive says:
I agree it would be nice to know. But at the same time I wonder if that would influence a lot of people to simply sort by number of votes and just vote for ones that have already gotten a large number of votes. I think with out being to see it encourages people to give their attention more evenly... But at the same time the compulsive number-of-views checking side of me just really wants to know how many votes I am getting.
Nov 30, 2011. 12:10 PMcwilliamson8 says:
Good luck to the finalists! Wow, never thought I'd make it this far, but am very proud of my build. Congratulations to whoever of us wins! If I win I completely plan to open up the laser to the local area to use, especially the high school robotics team I mentor.

Thanks everyone!! :)
Nov 30, 2011. 8:38 PMdaveda says:
Congratulations on being a finalist. That would be a great way to share the laser.

Did you ever wonder what happened to the other 11 finalists that were supposed to be picked? The rules say there will be 28 only 17 were picked.
Nov 28, 2011. 4:33 PMLAWNMUSIC says:
We all know someone can get a ton of votes from family and friends even though their ible doesn't merit votes. This is why it's good that the moderators choose half. If the moderators chose all of the finalists, the conspiracy theorists would cry foul. That's why it's good that visitors to the site can vote.

As far as being featured, that might be a legitimate beef, but this website is a business and they have to keep it interesting.

Regarding voting time, I like the way they do it now because everyone CAN get equal viewing time. If you have voting at the end, people do like they have in the past and wait to enter at the last possible second. That way, their entry is on the front page of the contest entries. They do this because hardly anyone is going to sift through several pages of entries before they make votes. So, under the old system, I think earlier entries were at a disadvantage.

I think the way they do it makes it interesting and it is obvious that they can't make everyone happy. Just enjoy the fact there are contests. When those of you who don't like the system start awarding prizes, you can do it the way you want. My $.02.
Nov 28, 2011. 9:55 PMdaveda says:
The biggest problem I see with the contest is the lack of public visibility in the judging process. You can not even see how many votes any of the entries received, let alone how any were actually judged on the "Criteria" that was set up in the "Rules". According to the rules the judges actually choose all of the finalists with 49% of there decision based on the votes, not 49% of the finalist being chosen by the votes.

Please explain how everyone can get equal viewing time. As I remember the voting was open for the entire length of the contest plus 3 days. The rules say "Voting Period. Prior to the Deadline and for three (3) days after the Deadline".

But who knows as they do not follow their own Rules, they only chose 17 finalist when the rules say there will be 28.
Nov 26, 2011. 11:30 AMdaveda says:
It would appear that the people at Instructables may have their favorite picked out before judging takes place. I know a lot of the finalists were featured on the front page of the web site before judging took place.

This gives the featured entry more visibility with the possibility of more votes. Even though the votes was only 49% of the judging to pick the finalists it could still influence the judges. I would think that to be completely fair no contest entry could be a featured instructable. Also the rules state that 28 finalists will be chosen, I only count 17. Am I missing something?
Nov 27, 2011. 11:46 AMeplunkett says:
I've been wondering this myself. My main concern is with the voting period. If you get in on day 1 you can collect way more votes than someone who enters in one of the final days. I think voting should start when the contest is closed. Or give each entry an equal number of days to collect votes, say 5.

With regard to not allowing featured instructables, that would rule out the majority of the quality instructables.... But I do understand where you are coming from. The day my instructable got on the front page I got 10x the traffic
Nov 27, 2011. 8:30 PMdaveda says:
There does seem to be a lot of inequalities in the judging process and the fact that only 17 finalists were chosen, when the rules very plainly say there will be 28,
seems odd.
Nov 27, 2011. 4:31 PMNightHawkInLight says:
I personally think there should be no user voting at all, and instead there should simply be a system of points based on specific criteria. All the judges should have to fill out the points in each category for every entry and the totals would determine finalists. It's far too vague right now as to how things are judged. I don't think people should have to pander to viewers for contest votes. The finalists should be determined based purely on the instructables merit, not on views - and I say that as one who often gets featured and receives quite a few views.
Nov 27, 2011. 4:35 PMNightHawkInLight says:
I also don't want people to think that I'm saying that the finalists in this contest don't deserve their place, I think the finalists are great. I just think it would allow much more clarity if we could all go back and see how our instructables were rated by the judges, and what aspects were scored poorly that would need improving for the next contest.
Nov 27, 2011. 8:48 PMdaveda says:
I would agree that there should be no user voting, and that the judging process should be more open. Also all entrants should have there scores shown for all of (the "Criteria"): originality, usefulness, simplicity, and clarity of instructions.
Each Criteria should have it's score shown.
I would really like to see the scores for "simplicity" that these finalists got, also the "usefulness" score would be interesting. The technological know how displayed in some of these is outstanding but simple they are not.

Did you wonder what happened to the other 11 finalist? The rules say there will be 28, but only 17 were chosen.

By the way I loved your fire wire.
Nov 26, 2011. 8:11 PMtjorgensen1 says:
You may be missing that there were more than 17 on the first day these were posted. That same day they must have "narrowed" it down to these 17. If it makes him/her feel any better (which it may or may not), I believe Mr (Ms?) Inducktion's Instructable was one of those. It was a finalist for a bit, but now it is not.

I hope this helps with at least one of your concerns. The others, I'm afraid, I have insufficient knowledge to address.
Nov 29, 2011. 11:09 AMInducktion says:
Hrm. That still doesn't make sense why there's only 17 finalists. But, that does make me feel a bit better about my instructable. I put quite a bit of thought into it.

And it's Mr. :)

Maybe, someone should try and contact the staff and see what they say? I don't think they read these comments!
Nov 26, 2011. 9:16 PMdaveda says:
According to the posted rules "The winner(s) will be determined through two (2) rounds of judging". These are "Selection of Finalists" and "Selection of Winner(s)". There is no mention of any "narrowing" of finalists.
Under Section A, number 8 Judging it says "Sponsor will choose 28 finalists from the pool of all eligible entries." So where are the other 11?
Nov 26, 2011. 11:46 PMtjorgensen1 says:
I can't really answer that. I assumed it was part of their "selection of winners" process to narrow the field. Assumptions are risky things though, so I hope someone else can give you a better answer.

I'd retire my jeweler's saw! And I'd like to try some paper cutting, stencils for etching & make parts to build a self-replicating machine. I was trying to make a design from the book "Create Colorful Aluminum Jewelry" by Helen Harie which uses the ubiquitous aluminum drink can. The author says to use paper punches used in scrap-booking, but my 1ST purchase from Amazon was defective & shattered on using it. The seller refunded the purchase price, but not the $10 for shipping. I'd never have to suffer this fate again with a Zing!
Nov 17, 2011. 1:14 PMcfuhr1 says:
Zing would probably etch on Aluminum (You need to purchase a seperate areosole to make it really work) But I'm not sure it would cut through it?

Most of your Alumium Jewelry is Anodized pretty colors. RioGrande.com could help you with coloring issues. But why when you have a top knotch machine limit yourself to Alumium? Check out Making wooden Ear-rings And I'd start with something that has a much easier to both use on the machine, prints well, and customers accept the mark up more redally. And that would be Cherry.
Oct 25, 2011. 6:39 PMmookiechan says:
It won't cut aluminum ... sorry dude, rubber, plastic, wood, acrylic, etc... soft materials. No metal. You need a MAJOR laser to cut metal and a ZING isn't even close. :(
Nov 14, 2011. 8:53 PMcfuhr1 says:
I agree it wont cut those things. But! I will cut enough things that cutting metal can be sent out of house. So I'd check if the price differances between a MAJOR laser and a Zing is worth the differance?

In my case it will do enough of the work I need done so that I can keep it busy. The major work I can send out for.
Oct 25, 2011. 9:49 AMPDRWLSN says:
Don't retire your jewelers saw yet, the Zing will mark coated or anodized aluminum but will not cut it.

They closed the contest early :( or am I not doing something right?
Nov 15, 2011. 6:33 PMDiscountCollegeStudent says:
The contest closed at 11:59 PST, Nov 14th. If you submitted yesterday before that deadline, you should see your project listed above under the words, "Your Instructables that are already entered in this contest pending moderator approval." According to the rules (or at least my understanding of them), if you met the deadline, you just need to wait for moderator approval before your project is listed. That should take one business day.

I submitted my DIY Futon project yesterday around 7:00PM PST, and I'm still waiting on approval, but at least I can see it under the 'waiting for approval' thing.

"Accepting
Entries are accepted by Instructables staff within one business day (M-F). What matters is the submission time, not acceptance time."

Nov 14, 2011. 8:39 PMcfuhr1 says:
Yes I have experiance around Epilogs but no I don't actually own one. My point in the video is that you can quite effectivly use them even before you buy one. Then go to the Bank and show them how much money your business would save by taking the work inhouse.

I don't believe that this Idea should be done by large comanies that dictate what you will like; but instead is a good outlet for local Artists doing local application to the very small well serviced markets. Thus I give it away, as an option to people who think that they don't have enough money to start a business.

And Yes I have several other interesting Projects (that are mine) that I would do with an Epilog after I've attended the training seminars.

I have a quick question;

Would entering your contest earlier increase your chances of winning?...

Because then people have more time to vote for your instructable, and you also additionally get more views...

Nov 10, 2011. 1:54 PMPenolopy Bulnick says:
It could and it might not. By entering earlier, you are there to be voted on earlier. If you are later, you show up on the first few pages which tend to get more attention. So it can go either way.
Nov 10, 2011. 3:37 PMpastprimitive says:
So are you saying the more votes you get the more points you have, or is there a maximum number of votes? Or with other words... Once you get a maximum number of votes you can't get anymore points contributed to the 49% of your score from voting, as stated in the rules that goes towards selecting the 28 finalists?

Essentially is it graded on a curb, or is their simply a point where there is no difference in the scoring for an entry that has 1000 votes compared to one with 10000 votes? Of course I have no clue what that limit is.

Hope that made sense.
Nov 11, 2011. 8:33 AMorvis says:
Nope. As far as I know, there is no limit. T'would be in the official rules otherwise.

Thanks for adding my instructable to the contest! I am excited by the prospect of being able to win a laser cutter. This is just the type of tool that takes projects to the next level. I have experience with solid modeling, and having others machine parts for my projects, so I can appreciate what a valuable asset this can be for cutting your own materials. I also have a fair amount of graphics experience, so I am sure that all my personal electronics would soon be sporting custom engraving if I won. sabojeep has some sound advice.

One thing I would add is to make sure that folks know exactly what you're using for tools, technique, and materials.

Another tip: Accessibility.

If you're offering an Instructable that requires the use of a twenty-thousand-dollar machine (not that that's a bad thing), make sure that there's a solution out there for those of us who don't have access to that kind of tool.

Also, if you're using an odd piece of scrap from somewhere, let us know where you got it, or at least the dimensions so we can make our own.

Good luck!

I've done a couple ibles and I can offer this advise, i'm sure other creators can expand upon it.

Plan on making 2 of everything you create. The first one will be the starter project that you work on improving. The second is for the ible.

Take lots of pictures, you can be selective when you post the ible. Also take pictures of the process not just the project, this helps with the build explanation. Also try to take pics of the individual parts if applicable.

Don't be afraid to talk about your mistakes, we all make them and they can help others from repeating yours.

Add a "if I did it again..I would change..." piece to the ible.

Let folks know how long it took to build and how you got the idea.

Have FUN! the reward is taking your idea and turning it into reality, the prize is a benefit.

Hope this helps, and good luck. I haven't posted an ible in awhile so I think its time to get the creative juices flowing again ; )

Contrary to what you might think, the moon actually has really lax customs regulations, but the going rate for postage these days is about $1000 per GRAM. I don't know what a laser cutter weighs, but P&H would probably cost more than zing's entire annual profit. So either move closer to a metropolitan centre, or cut your moon rocks by hand

I am Raajnish from India. I humbly request to include Indians like me who are at present doing sand engraving. I am not having a laser engraver as it is a costly affair for me. When enquired about epilog laser engraving machine, I costs about 6,00,000/- Indian rupees (equivalent to 12000 U.S Dollars) plus other taxes and shipping charges). It is a very high amount for me. I am in Screen Printing, foil printing for the last 29 years. And at last in Sand engraving for the last 1 year.
When considering Indian art and architecture, It has a centuries long tradition. Indian art and architecture are highly appreciated in the Western Countries. There is a lot to do by laser engraving. Only by going through the images of indian art and architecture, one can understand the great tradition of if. So I request you to open entry for us also. If given a chance I can show how and what to do with laser engraving.
