Just wanted to say thanks to instructables, BurdaStyle and the prize sponsors at Singer, Amann Group Mettler, Indigo Juction and Sublime Stitching. All the prizes are amazing. The Singer 20U is a beast. I have as much fun configuring it as I do sewing on it.
Amazing contest. But I'm waiting for a worldwide contest. Is there a Sommer sewing contest, right ? Somehow next week I 'm going to start a sewing project . It1s not clothing ,, it's a plushie ;)
Users were able to submit entries until 11:59 PM on June 12, and a bunch of those probably weren't looked over and approved by moderators until later in the day. I think I read something like that somewhere in the rules or these comments. :-)
I just found this contest and I am very excited about it but I have concerns, like others who have commented here. There are MANY entries that are not clothing and there are even more entries that done actually have any step by step information with them. Will these be disqualified before the judging?
As I read it, "documenting the process and/or final product of a garment " means that you can both document the process and the final product OR you can choose to just submit the final product. If the rules had explicitly stated that entrants must document both the process AND the final product, I would not have entered my corset.
An official answer might clear things up a bit though. I'd like to take the time to recreate my project step-by-step if the rules were not presented correctly, ending up in my project being disqualified; if we don't hear something soon, I'll run out of time to do so!
Me too. I've learned so much from internet tutorials! If I'd known about this contest just a few days earlier, I would have spent some time taking photos of each step. I'd like to share some of what I've learned from tutorials and through trial and error with others!
I agree with janedoemn. I think it's ok too. I'm actually glad this got brought up because I wasn't going to enter since I didn't have the time for a tutorial but now I may.
Btw, your corset is lovely! I think you stand a very good chance. I have three favorites at the moment and yours is one of them.
I hesitated entering the contest until I read this part, "submit a Step By Step, Photo, or Video Instructable documenting the process and/or final product of a garment you’ve either sewn by machine or hand, knit, crochet...". I'm one of the people that just entered my final product thinking it might not be accepted but it was taken anyway.
Just enter your project and see what happens! If anything, we'd all love to see what you've made.
Well I don't see where the instructable peeps have replied. I will not put my entry in until the question is answered. I agree that there are some entries that should not be in this contest. If I wanted jewelry I would enter into the Dremmel Jewelry contest. I have entered some of the Burda Style contests and they are very strict on their contests i would think that this would be that way also. Hopefully someone will clarify the entries so others can enter.
Could a staff person weigh in on this? It now looks like jewelry is accepted. If that is the case, everyone in the Dremel contest should know that they can also enter this one. Thanks!
I have to agree... I see several entries that are not garments, period. I make no comment about the quality of the entries... but they aren't garments, so I'm surprised to see them accepted as entries.
I'm with J.H.G. on this. Which is it: "This contest is focused solely on garment design and construction, not accessories" or any fashion related entry? According to "How To Enter", all entries must be approved by a moderator before being included in the contest. A couple of the entries are definitely questionable under the garment design/not accessory rule, and one in particular may be questionable under the general fashion related rule. I was planning to enter this contest with my first contributions to the Instructables community, but the guidelines seem vague enough to actually hinder fair competition.
I don't think so, the rules say there has to be some machine stitching or hand stitching. Unless you know how to "sew" on duct tape, seams like that would be pretty hard as sticky as it is LOL
But a duct tape clothing contest would be sooooo cool!
Actually, no. It says it must be "a garment you’ve either sewn by machine or hand, knit, crochet or a combination of garment creation techniques."
That means you can enter: * a garment that you've sewn by machine * a garment that you've sewn by hand * a garment you've knitted * a garment you've crocheted OR * a garment you've made using a combination of garment creation techniques
Since using duct tape does give you a finished garment, I think it would be acceptable. That's just my opinion, though.
The way I read it, it sounds like traditional material, or at lease some traditional elements. I'll be interested to see what the instructable peeps say. :)
The BurdaStyle website (www.burdastyle.com) is an almost-as-cool-as-Instructables website for sewer's with thousands of pictures and lots of free patterns.
Ya, I was super excited when I read about it on the BS blog. Then I got to the line "US entries only." Maybe I'll get a post office box in Sault, Michigan just so I can enter these US-only contests...

Doesn't this disqualify several of the entries already?
I'm not trying to be a downer. I'm just wondering if I missed something.
I don't see why not! as long as it 'is' clothes.
