I more got that it was a 'photo instructable' contest, rather than a 'photo' contest. It was to celebrate their new 'photo instructable' format. So emphasis, still, on the actual instructable.

By their very definition, all i'bles are photo instructables; they have always been photo-based and have never been published unless they included photos as part of the i'ble. Once again...what else did I miss?

When voting opens you can go to the entries area and there will be vote buttons underneath the instructables. If you want to click in and read first, you will find the vote button on the top of the instructable on the left hand side. Hope this helps :)

I've asked for a random button for ages, perhaps even making it the default pageview format for larger contests.

In general, a huge contest like this needs a better method of voting. Smaller contests with less than 100 entries are serviced just fine with this method, but it breaks down when you get a few hundred!

It would seem the voting phase is over, as the contest is now listed as being in the Judging phase. Perhaps they're weeding through some of the entries first, then returning the contest to the voting phase? I'm really not sure.

Or, maybe the finalists will be announced soon...

I can understand your frustration. (I do not work for the site, just to be clear) There are many things entered in this competition, which is great because it means the community has a lot of people active. I know very little about coding and setting up websites, but I do know the larger it is the harder it is to make happen. It does not mean it wont, heck they might be working on this right now.

I would also say that your opinion still counts. The site is made up of users and pro users. I used the site for quite a while before deciding I wanted to invest and be a pro user. I just recently started posting. Since joining a lot has changed to make the site user friends, so I personally believe they are open to suggestions.

A random button would be cool. Seeing how many votes people have in a contest would be cool. Having page listings so you could skip to the end or sort by newest to oldest or oldest to newest would be great.

I am sure we will eventually get these things. Instructables does an amazing job of keeping contest going all the time, and with great prizes. Keep making stuff, if you don't win this time, you may another.

I'm in this competition too... I had more time than more people and physically voted for quite a few projects over the many pages....

Don't forget that votes only make up for half the process... The instuctables team also picks out certain i'bles they think worthy...

My regret is not having my first entry for this contest entered later. I entered my other just on a whim and every time I go to look at the entry's I think.....oh lordie why did I decide THAT was a good plan. LOL

thats why half are picked by votes and the other half are by judges, mine only had a couple vote but i think it was picked by a judge.

The reason why people vote is a combination of alot of things... I can only answer for myself, but my main focus is quality of Photography/Over all Instuctable (if its a photo ible I like to see that its a GOOD well done photograph, if it's an actual staged ible, are the steps easy to understand, well documented etc)

I have joined alot of competitions and have never won... we all stand as much of a chance as each other... unfortunately it happens that there will ALWAYS be a winner and a loser

i don't know, but I'm sure that my entries will be overlooked by everyone. My guess the recent and popular entries will make the majority of votes.

Sometimes things have to be viewed by the quality.

The number of votes just determines half of the finalists. The instructables judges choose the other finalists... and then they determine the winners from the big pool of finalists.

Contest winners aren't chosen by popularity.

Winning instructables tend to have clear directions, lots of good quality pictures, and have a creative, interesting topic that appeals to lots of the adult diy crowd here.

By popularity, I mean the trend of people voting for a particular entry. I have no problem with how people chose their votes, but partly I feel jealous from other entries that I (could) beat with more votes.

Yes, I agree! Your instructables are very good! Though they aren't very popular(no offense or anything, mine aren't either). and thats why it is not fair, it should be on quality, not popularity, or which featured user made it!

Though with this contest, there will be soon over 1000 instructables in it, not every one has the time to look through all of them.

It is a mixture between popularity, quality, and the idea. I've won one contest with my dremel turned into a generator for a dremel contest. It wasn't very popular (one vote) even though people liked the idea and I worried that it wouldn't win, but the judges seemed to have liked it.

I believe that they're taking so long to post the finalist because they are waiting until ALL finalists are chosen and not just the voted in ones.

I think with 999 entries to sort through it might take a bit longer than usual. I think that is the most entries int a contest that I've ever seen.
