Instructables Homepage!!
Well, here's my Instructables Homepage idea, I just want people to see it.
Some might not know how this will work, so let me explain.
-Pop ups go where is says "Pop up Ad", etc.
-Contests go where it says "Contest Listings go in here"
-Community blog goes where it says blog.
TOP
-Instructables Robot goes to the help page. (the bubble thing too)
-Click on "Instructables" or the hand, and it goes to the homepage.
-Mouse Mouse! That's the special Instructables that's always on the home page.
-Popular/ Most Rated/ Most Viewed/ RANDOM. These buttons will direct you to the desired button thing..
-"Check out these cool Instructables." Not able to click.
MIDDLE AND ETC.
-Featured. Instructables will be going down that isle thing, and at the bottom, click the button to see more featured Instructables.
-Popular. Same as Featured.
-Zeitgiest. Same as featured/ popular.
-Same thing with blog, click the "see more blogs" to obviously see more blogs..
RIGHT SIDE
-Forums. Well, it can be in any order, but it's going to be like how it is now. When you hover over any of those buttons, it will come out, like how you hover over forums now, and it comes out. All the same stuff will be in there as normal.
-Groups. Same as forums.
-Instructables. Same as Groups.
-SlideShows. Same as Instructables.
-Videos. Same as you know what.
-Newsletter. Takes you to newsletter.
-Submit. The stuff that comes out when it says "submit" will come out.
-YOU. Takes you to your YOU page. www.Instructables.com/you
-SEARCH. Obviously the search bar.
-ART/CRAFT/FOOD/GAMES/HOME/LIFE/OFFBEAT/RIDE/TECH. Click on one. It takes you to the desired one.
-Robot on the side of tabs stuff. Just a decoration.
-About/ contact/ news/ blah blah. Takes you to whichever one you click.
-MAKER STORE. Maker Store.
-Instructables Store. <--- "Repeat".
Here's the link to the image.
The image is below if you don't want to move your mouse to the link.
Click the link though, it's full size on the link I gave you.
Thanks for looking, tell me what you think! (Even if you hate it.)
If you have any questions about anything I did not mention, ask me in a comment!
Thanks!

Wow. Nice job! I was just about to post a forum topic on something in the same topic area of this; Instructables Mobile. I think it would be sweet to have a mobile instructables where you can login, post comments, view forums and instructables; everything except videos, on a cell phone; or where i got my idea from, a PSP or Nintendo DS with browser. I tried to go onto instructables from my PSP and it won't let me login, so i can't post comments and it takes forever to load. A Mobile Instructables, with smaller pictures and not so many graphics, would be nice (hint, hint ewilhelm)

That's actually a good idea. I tried Instructables from my PSP too. Didn't work, everything was all weird. But wow, Instructables Mobile does sound good, though it might be hard to use.

Well, my idea was you go to m.instructables.com and it prompts you to login. if you login, woohoo, if not, you click login as guest. then it takes you to a homepage with all of the links for featured, zeitgeist, and whatnot, but without pictures and smaller text. Then you go to the forums or instructables and when you want to type in a comment, you would click 'reply' and it would take you to a new screen where you would be able to type in the comment and hit post.
all of the pictures on the instructables and whatnot would be smaller, the text would be smaller, there wouldn't be all that many colors or anything like that (so it would load up faster). Kinda like the mobile version of myspace; loads decently fast on PSP, you can see some pictures but not all, and the first time you go there, it prompts you to login.
HINT HINT, EWILHELM!
(tried to be as subtle as possible)

Sounds like a great idea. It's best if you post your idea in a forum topic, with some sketches in Paint maybe. That would be great. Sounds like an awesome idea, you could tell Eric about it too! (Eric is ewilhelm, if you didn't know... haha.)

I'll make up some pictures in paint, and put them all inside of a psp screen so we can ge the full feel. I know eric is ewilhelm, thats why i keep HINTING!!!! to him.
I can't decide if he looks more like a weird kindergartener (is that a word..firefox doesn't think so?), or the Robot's demented little brother.
Yeah, I was thinking that was great too :-) but I have been in a bit of a mood lately and didn't want to come off snidely ;-)

A bit of a mood? You have been posting pictures of cute animals. Is that the MOOD?

No, this is all going towards my email, take cover!!!
Isn't it amazing, how many people will have their inbox clogged, just because somebody adds a useless comment to a thread?
I know! I feel bad. Thankfully, long long long ago, I setup a label (I use gmail) and told it to skip the inbox ;-)
Hmm, I get like one a day....I guess I have mine set up that way. *shrug*

You can set it to get them in your email as they are made, by hour, or by day. I set it to by hour. I would make it "as they're made", but then my inbox would be clogged, so I just go with the hour. I wish there was 15, 20, 30, or whatever minutes, and we could choose...
Hey, treat yourself to some "me time", just half an hour with your favourite newspaper, a cup of fresh-ground coffee and a glass of fresh orange juice (alternate sips, delish) in the back of your favourite cafe.
I would have to wake in the middle of the night for that I am afraid *sigh*

Nice Job! It looks like you put a lot of work into this drawing, I hope Eric will consider this, wow you have helped out this great site in so many ways : ) Keep it up! -Alex
Whoa! Pretty good! There are definitely usable ideas here.

Thanks. Will you use anything? I would like to know if you do. :-)
I've been thinking of adding a link on every page that says something along the lines of "What is Instructables?" There are lots of people who find Instructables via search and just jump right into a project; I'd like those people to have an easy way to figure out what the site is all about. Your speech bubble from the Robot in the upper right is pretty inviting and is along that same direction.

I was kind of thinking of making a link go to something just like that. I was going to make it say "Instructables is a place where you upload your ideas and show others how to do it, etc." But I didn't know where that link is (if there is one), so I just put the Instructables Robot. Your idea is good, I hope I can see it. Then I will try it out, and be unbeatable, mwuahaha!
I think you need Christian Anthony to redesign the robot to take after Gorillaz's version. =]
Jan 18, 2008. 5:46 PMGorillazMiko (author)
says:
What's the Christian Anthony? And what do you mean by the comment, Weissensteinburgerwigglelaggiemagifabio?
Christian Anthony is Robot's builder. I was saying he should redesign the robot to look more like your drawing of him...it was supposed to be a joke.

Oh... I get it. My Instructables Robot drawing isn't great, but you can get the idea. Right? RIGHT??? :P
Because he's a cross between a weird kindergartener and Robot's demented little brother.

Maybe someday he will take over Instructables, and everything will be about oil and gas.

And we shall. What did you think about my idea of the homepage? And by the way, if you didn't know, it took me about 1 day to think about the idea, and probably 2 hours to draw, working, sweating, letting the PRESSURE FALL DOWN ON MY SHOULDERS.
I told you how I liked it already...where I asked how long it took you to draw.

Oh. I just checked now. I guess I forgot, I've been doing a lot of homework. :P Nice new Instructable!
I really like the helpbot! Or, maybe we should call him the HelpBot.

Thanks, I was pretty proud of it, I thought it was a good idea too.

sweetness!! almost as good as a egg samwich! allthough, i think it would be better with no popups lol whats the mouse mouse? also, i think the ultimate homepage would be something similar to this for new viewers but members can customize it with a drag and drop function?(impractical, i know) you have too much time on your hands...(no offense, in the case of instructables, its really good) +++++

Jan 18, 2008. 5:46 PMGorillazMiko (author)

True, but the Robot isn't that good, but you get the idea.
Cool! I think the one now is ok, and it would be hard to change
Jan 18, 2008. 5:44 PMGorillazMiko (author)
says:
True. The current one is nice too, but this is just my version. ;-)
There are a few really good ideas on that..how long did it take you to draw it out?
Jan 18, 2008. 5:43 PMGorillazMiko (author)
says:
About 2 hours most, I had to stop a few times. A lot of erasing too.
The layout could use a couple of small changes, but otherwise, from a design standpoint, is actually very good. Have you taken any art classes in school yet? How long did this take to come up with?
Jan 18, 2008. 5:43 PMGorillazMiko (author)
says:
No, and this took me about 1 day thinking, and 1 day to draw, but a lot of erasing.
