why would you waste an expensive diode on this? you could just put a blue filter over a cheap laser pointer.

haha if only that would work. cute tho.
Jan 12, 2008. 8:49 PMzachninme says:
I don't think that will work... since they only emit red light? Someone correct me, though.

you could always get a bright white led with a blue filter if you could find a reflector of some sort

Yes, that is a huge misunderstanding of how lasers work. They are only emitting that frequency. Meanwhile, filters work by blocking all of the colors except for the color of the filter.

So, if you put a blue filter in front of a red laser you get...not much.

If that's all it took, then why aren't we seeing every color of the rainbow for lasers?

the following statement is with all do respect boooo, this thing stinks, with a few more steps it could have been great by giving it a proper, 2 dollar power supply. booooo Blue Ray laser diodes are the most fragile of the already fragile Laser Diodes. You have now mislead thousands of your fans. Any I swear if you respond and say that it still works I'm going to go crazy That's why you don't get my vote

AGREED! finally, someone else who understands how delicate these poor diodes are. come to laserpointerforums.com where the rest of us laserists are... don't worry my friend. few more days now and they will all have tiny violet LED phasers.

ANY LED is fragile, that's why there are ratings for them. Stay 10% below max, and they will go on and on. Trust me, I've fried more than a few ;) The rest still live. I voted for this instructable. Why? Red LED lasers could be used as easily, and it was a rather cool bit ;) I've likely burned up more components over the last 40 years than most will in 80 ;) If you don't make smoke once in a while, you ain't experimenting enough. :)
