Hi in this instructable i'm gonna show you how to make a broomstick pencil! this can work with a pen but at the moment i was in need of a pencil! It is a fairly easy project as most of the equipment you should find in your house and take up to half an hour depending on what you have and how delicately you want to do it.

Step 1: The Base

First you need your basic pencil(or any pen), sharpened and ready to cover. Then you need some brown paper (i printed some off the internet ) to cover the pencil/pen. I used double-sided cellotape but you can use whatever works best. Stick the sellotape/glue onto the clear side of the brown paper then stick nice and tightly to the pencil/pen. This is the base.

Step 2: Adding the Sticks

This part is slightly tricky (well it was for me!). You need about 15-20 toothpicks and a small elastic band (I had a big one but if you have a small one they are better) to make the sticks at the end. Its best before anything else to trim the toothpicks so they aren't going to irritate your hand when writing. Now you need to bundle up the toothpicks and secure them to the blunt end of the pencil(the side without the lead pointing out) with the elastic band. it doesn't have to be neat because this is the next part. as long as its attached to the pencil we can take out a few of the toothpicks and start to arrange them into comfortable places. This is easier but make sure you have the elastic band with some of the toothpicks wrapped together with the pencil/pen or it could go wrong. you should now have a neat line around the pencil/pen of toothpicks. it wont matter if there's some spare I just made an estimate.

Step 3: The Foot-rests

For this step you need a couple of thin metal sticks. First, if they are straight you need to get some pliers or scissors and bend them so that they both have a little curve at the bottom to rest the players feet on. (this is to make it seem like the brooms in the movie but you can skip this step) Then you push these through the elastic band in either side of the pencil/pen like you did with the toothpicks. It should now look like a real broom!

Step 4: Finishing

You now have you original Harry Potter broomstick pencil/pen made entirely by you! it should be sturdy and ready to use but if you would like a sleek feel i suggest you coat the brown layer in a small coat of pva glue so when it dries it has a very smooth feeling.
