If you're out of WD-40, or don’t have any oil, you can stop a door from squeaking by rubbing a little butter on the hinge.

To shine up cast iron, a small dab of butter on a cotton rag will make your metal look like new. This works well with other metals, as well.

Butter can also be used to add shine to your leather baseball gloves, jackets, belts, wallets, purses, etc. Because butter contains proteins, it has plenty of amino acids and won't hurt the leather. Simply rub a small amount of butter on your leather goods for a nice shine.

It not only goes rancid, but it would also attract insects. Not-to-mention the dog would be constantly licking your door hinges and baseball gloves lol!

Remember putting butter on the chain of my bike as a kid and I had the dogs licking it for ages!

DON'T put butter anywhere near leather. Butter has salt in it, and salt is a sure way to make leather dry out and crack.

Butter might make your leather smell after a few weeks or months due to it's tendency to go rancid. if you really want to use butter on your leather, maybe you should use it to make Ghee first. then you'd remove the stuff that goes rancid and it would be stable.

it might make a smell sure. its definetly old old old odl school.... but when with out, this would work. (think mad max, or beyond thunder dome if your into tina turner) animal fats like this were what kept our things working and in good condition once upon a time. they also kept are food safe (ish). stale animal fat might be a bit unsanitary. and attract a few small vermin of various sizes. but its at least not possionous like other lubes and treatments are. that much can be said for it. butter on my clothes i'll pass though

A colleague of mine used mayonnaise(!) to quiet a squeaky door. It worked great for the first week or so, then it got sort of funky...
