100 Ways to Reduce Your Impact

Step 13Use Tote bags when you shop!

Use Tote bags when you shop!
Purchase a tote bag to take with you when you go shopping. Use these so you do not have to waste the paper or plastic bags.

If you do use plastic bags, re-use them. Use something like this plastic bag recycler, to reuse your plastic bags.

Remember the thousand year life of plastic bags? Well, the plastic bags holding mulch I didn't put up with the sun for a year - they have disintegrated. So much for years and years (only in the landfill, where there is no sun..) Still, using anything just once is a total waste, so it is preferable to reuse plastic bags.

The bag disintegrated, but the plastic is still there. The tiny particles of plastic are more likely to enter our food chain. Hopefully the polyethylene will just pass through us, but I'm not sure. Polycarbonate is the one that causes real problems.
