100 Ways to Reduce Your Impact

Step 32Lawn mower blades

Lawn mower blades
Set lawn mower blades one notch higher. Longer grass means less evaporation. Saves 500 to 1,500 gallons each month.

As much as you like short grass, think about how many times you actually use your lawn. Not very often right? So make your blades of grass a little higher, and help the environment!

BUT! Higher blade and longer grass means more frequent lawn mowing. If you use a gas powered lawn mower- which most people do- the admissions of more frequent lawn moqing will probably have a worse effect on the enviroment than having some longer grass and saving evaporation. But thats just my opinion.

I have to agree with you about the more frequent mowing.  Ugh!  But then, I'm not a fan of grass.  It's a water & fertilizer hog, it's high maintenance for mowing & weeding; and, given enough rain, water just sheets off it straight into the sewers instead of into the ground.  If you feel you really need a grass lawn, there are organic ways to take care of it, but to me, the cons outweigh the pros.

Why not give up the gas powered mower? I purchased an old fashioned push mower and it really works great! It leaves the grass clippings and does not contribute to noise or air pollution.

Definitely! Lawn mowers (leaf blowers, edgers, hedge trimmers, etc) do not have the emissions control devices that cars do, and should be replaced with manual or electrical tools. The usual figure cited is that a gas powered lawn mower running for 30 minutes produces as much pollution as a car traveling a hundred miles. If you don't have the muscle to push a push-mower, there are lots of electric options now. The old-fashioned corded electrics are the most reliable and powerful -- once you learn to manage the cord, they're very easy to use. I don't have one anymore (moved into a condo), but I always felt a little like a rodeo rider slinging the cord around like a lasso...
