100 Ways to Reduce Your Impact

Step 9Use masstransit, carpool, walking, biking

Use masstransit, carpool, walking, biking
Driving 10 percent less, by walking, biking, carpooling, or taking public transit, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 0.2 to 0.8 tonnes per year, depending on the vehicle.

Individual driving can get expensive. If one person can reduce the amount they drive, their carbon footprint is extremely lower than one who drives everyday.

Electric scooters are also a very good alternative.

Riding a motorbike would be a better idea. It's a way to have your cake and eat it too. I went from driving everywhere to riding whenever I can, and I've gone from $150/month to just over $70/month. It also feels better to have a $4 fillup versus a $30 one.
Of course, mass transit in my area sucks. The closest bus stop is 7 miles away...

Not too mention the subtraction of the stress of driving. I've been car free for almost a year and I am in a much better mood since. Plus riding a bike is exercise, something many Americans could use. It's free. Low maintenance. Moderate activity. Driving should be a back up plan.

If you don't drive your car to work, just work, you will be amazed how much less maintenance it needs and how much longer it lasts.
