If you're like me, you have a zillion DVD's lying around, with movies, photos, software, music and all kinds of stuff - the only problem is: finding the one you need when you need it, and before that particular disc is destroyed through normal wear-and-tear.

Here's a simple project that will help keep all those discs organized - inexpensive and easy to create.

Gather a few simple materials: Scrap board, old CD or DVD for placement, plastic hangers, drill with large bits (fitting hangers), pruning sheers (could use hacksaw blade or bread knife), pen or pencil, drywall screws.

Step 1: Mark Board

Make your mark 5" apart to allow space for DVDs.

Step 2: Drill Holes & Cut Hangers

A 30 degree angle is what I went for. Choose a drill bit to fit the diameter of the plastic hangers. Clip the plastic hangers to appropriate size with pruning sheers. Make sure they fit snugly into holes. If not, adjust drill bit size.

Step 3: Mount on Wall and Get Organized!

Attach to wall with drywall screws.   Insert lengths of hangers cut into appropriate pieces. No need to use glue, as you can mix and match colors for sorting purposes, if desired.

Use a directory archiving program like "CD Catalog Expert" to generate a database on your computer as to what is on all of those discs! Sort onto the board, potentially packing into those old 50-packs you have lying around, or other archival methods (boxes or bins).

Now, with a bit of luck, you can actually put your hands on that file (that you JUST KNOW you burned to disc) when you want it!   What a great feeling!

Even this small board can keep up to 5 terrabytes of data (relatively) safe from being scraped across a sandy floor under foot and lost forever! (it can happen, believe me!)   :D
