A couple of alternatives to a sharp knife for scraping the enamel off of this type of wire. Use sand paper and sand off some. A small butane lighter or lit match will also burn back enamel. If you go the match/lighter route, you will want to have some steel wool (very fine variety) to clean the suit off the wire. You will probably get the best results by tinning the contact pad and the wire you are going to solder as well.
