I live in the UK, and work for a games consultancy. I used to take my toys apart and put them back together when I was a kid, nowadays I try to do the same with emotion, motives and culture.
I also have this habit of trying new things. I'm an utter neophile when it comes to functionality, but I have taste for retro aesthetics.
Customisation is important to me. As well as making things more special, it keeps many skills alive, relevant and coexisting with global economies of scale. It, and all of the open source, sharing type stuff enshrined by sites like instructables, keep culture healthy. Also, things I've bought are my property and I'll do what I like to them, regardless of cruddy EULAs, or warranties.
