Introduction: 3D Perspective Signature Model. I Will Design a Custom Model for the First Three People Who Comment!! (include Your Email Address)

Picture of 3D Perspective Signature Model. I Will Design a Custom Model for the First Three People Who Comment!! (include Your Email Address)

I remember seeing a sculpture in an album that I was browsing through, and it was a man playing a piano from one view and a man playing the violin from another view. I was fascinated by the concept and decided to create one of my own.

I played around in Solidworks, a CAD package, and created my own "perspective" sculpture of my signature. I then produced it with a 3D printer.

For those interested, comment with your email address, and I will create a custom model of your name, which you can 3d print. If you don't have a 3D printer, I can upload it to where you can get it printed. I said I would do this for the first three, but if I have time, I will try to do this for as many of you as possible. Just comment :)

Step 1: Pick 2 or 3 Views or Images for Each Perpective.

Picture of Pick 2 or 3 Views or Images for Each Perpective.

First, you need to decide what you want each side of your model to look like. For my signature, I naturally selected my first name from one perspective and my last name for the other. For the UCLA one, I decide to project a third image from the top-down view of the model.

Step 2: Extrude First View

Picture of Extrude First View

Then we extrude the first sketch. Make you extrude to the right depth. The length of your second sketch on the side view will determine  how far you should extrude the first.

Step 3: Sketch Your Second Image Onto the Plane Perpendicular to the First

Picture of Sketch Your Second Image Onto the Plane Perpendicular to the First

Now, you sketch your second view on the plane perpendicular to the first. This is when you check that your first extrusion is long enough to fit your second image. Your second image needs to fit within the solid area through which the first sketch was extruded.

Step 4: Extrude the Negative of the Second Sketch As a Cut and You're Done!

Picture of Extrude the Negative of the Second Sketch As a Cut and You're Done!

Now extrude the second image as a cut. Unlike the first sketch, where we boss extruded the image, we now extrude the negative of the image as a cut into the first extrusion.

There you have it! Now you have a solid model that can be 3D printed.

I still remember how mind-blown the first time I saw one of these. Now with easier access to 3D printing and some basic CAD skills, I can now create my own, personally customized, multidimensional models, and so can you!

Have fun and don't forget if you don't have CAD software and want your own sculpture, comment below and I will try to create some models for the first couple of comments.

Hi man... this is very awesome. I've been trying to figure out how to make a wire perspective sculpture and so far I haven't been able to find much on the internet. Do you think you would be able to help me out with some pointers? I'm trying to make a wire style sculpture from iron rods and would like it to depict the face of the late Nelson Mandela from the one side the head of an elephant. Any help would be much appreciated. (marketing at bezalel dot co dot za)

ziggalo (author)MartiensB12016-02-11

Sorry about the late reply, I've been extremely busy. I can definitely take a look. If you send me the images (Mandela's face and the elephant), I can see if I can get you started in the right direction with converting it to a wire sculpture.

He's done my siignature, he's uploaded it to Shapeways, I've paid for it to be produced in my choice of size (5 inches along its longest dimension) and material (a smooth-surfaced black plastic which appears silvery in certain lights), and Shapeways tells me they'll ship it by March 19th — coincidentally, my birthday.

It took a while, but here's what he made for me ...

My husband added to YouTube a video of me rotating it ...

Will the video embed?

KateGladstone (author)2012-05-16

Here"s a link to a video of the model made from my signature (or one of my signatures — for security's sake, this isn't the one I use on checks or on most correspondence) —

Still considering requests from the CAD-less teeming masses? I love this idea and have a lot of friends who would like it as well! Are you considering contracting? If you're still feeling generous, I would love one ( of my own. If you're looking to profit from your ingenuity, let me know how much for a few of them and we can work it out!

ziggalo (author)lorikgator2012-03-14

I sent you an email a couple of days ago. Let me know if you got it.

lorikgator (author)ziggalo2012-03-21

I did! Thank you for replying so quickly and I'm sorry my response has been so slow! Traveling for work means slow on personal e-mail... I'll respond shortly!!

ziggalo (author)lorikgator2012-03-22

No worries, I totally understand. Take your time, no hurry.

KateGladstone (author)2012-03-20

I look forward to hearing again from the project designer.

dcoyne (author)2012-03-12

this is my attempt. it's not as cool looking as yours (im no good at cursive). It says Daniel for the front side view and Coyne for the right side view

ziggalo (author)dcoyne2012-03-12

Looks good! I like the rendering

blacklizar (author)2012-03-05

hello.. i have some CAD software but i don't realy know how to use it verry well... then i was thinking if u can make a model... where one side says "Zaira" and the other something about love, or only LOVE and maybe in the top a heart or somthing a little romantic... i let the datails to youre imagination, to make it look something amazing an i don't really know how is this but i am thinkin about send the archive to this page to make it manofactured.

ziggalo (author)blacklizar2012-03-08

Hi, same as above, I have a lot of work to do plus the huge number of requests I've gotten. I would encourage you to play around with the software and follow the steps I outlined in the instructable.

If my schedule frees up a little, I'll send you a message about it.

ziggalo (author)2012-03-08

I'm adding new pictures of models I've done for some of the people who have commented. I also did one with Kobe Bryant's face and name.

tqwerty (author)2012-03-06

This is so cool!
I would love it if you could make me one, my email is (Taryn).
I know theres already more than three, but it's worth a try :D

ziggalo (author)tqwerty2012-03-06

Hi Taryn,
At the moment, I have a lot of work to do with the requests that I have already received, but when things lighten up and I have time, I'll shoot you an email about it. Thanks!

tqwerty (author)ziggalo2012-03-07

Thanks for the reply.

bluevenom (author)2012-03-05

hi can you email me at

jparrish32132 (author)2012-03-05

Hey I would love to get one of these. My name is Jared Parrish and my email is

mkeeling (author)2012-03-05

Looks very NICE! What is the largest scale that you can produce in. Send me more info on your products and services please.

dkollin (author)2012-03-05

Would love a signature made! You have my email - what's next?

KateGladstone (author)2012-03-04

I see you need 2 or 3 images — can you please use the same image (my first-name image) for all 3? I was going to send you my first and last names, but my last name is so much longer than my firstt that this may not work properly, or may just be unpleasing when done by this process. Oh ... Where do I go to give you a vote?

ziggalo (author)KateGladstone2012-03-05

right above the title of this instructable there's a banner about the contest and on the right , there's a vote button.

KateGladstone (author)ziggalo2012-03-05

Thank you!/

KateGladstone (author)2012-03-05

I voted for this project! Will my being a handwriting teacher increase the odds of being picked to get one?

marcusmxc (author)2012-03-05

Pure awesomeness! I think a video to see the different perspectives would add to the cool effect!

kfi5599982 (author)2012-03-04

Wow this is really, really cool.....
Heres my email ( )... I would love it if you could make me one!!

solomonhorses (author)2012-03-04

WOW! That is so AWESOME! I don't know if you're up to making these for everyone on here, but I would LOVE one! Im getting into 3D pringting myself, and Im making an Instructable on how to make your own extruding head. This file would be an awesome test for it!

putty1cat (author)2012-03-04

I would like to see this in a youtube video, so my brain can wrap itself around this idea. That would be really cool, thanks!

nwlaurie (author)putty1cat2012-03-04

me too! I have difficulty with 3D visualising (even 2D maps cause me grief!) but I really like the idea. I'd also love to know where I can see the violinist/pianist. Nick

lance.plater1 (author)2012-03-04

Hi your design looks amazing I would love it if you could make one with my last name Plater in cursive where the r makes a line to make the intersect of the t...just like the pic above but there and t are connecting by the line...

Heres my email ( )... I would love it if you could make me one!!

himselfamily (author)2012-03-04

This is fantastic. I want one please.

dcoyne (author)2012-03-04

This is awesome. I'm in a CAD 3D Modeling class and we have to come up with our own projects that we build in SolidWorks and then make them with the machines they have. They have a 3D printer, so I'd be so greatful if you would design one for me!

My email is

dcoyne (author)dcoyne2012-03-04

I voted for your entry btw

dcoyne (author)dcoyne2012-03-04

you don't have to actually make one for me-- I'd appreciate just the solidworks files of the cursive design (i'm no good at cursive)

KateGladstone (author)2012-03-04

It'a perfectly okay if you have to make the "leg" of the K touch the line I draw underneath it in this version of my signature — often, they end up touching anyway.

KateGladstone (author)2012-03-04

My e-mail is, and you can see my signature the version I use for personal papers) on the icon to the left of this message. (Since it's first name alone, it obviously isn't the one I put on checks:)
I'm figuring that the first-name-only version looks more striking and may be,easier for you to produce in 3-D; let me know if you need another/longer/larger version

KateGladstone (author)2012-03-04

As a handwriting instruction/remediation consultant (and director of the World Handwriting Contat), I'd love a 3-D model of my signature! Where do I send you my signature for 3-D-Ifying?

ZayneKolesar (author)2012-03-04

i know im late but can you please make one for me. this is one of the coolest instructables here! my emailis

2schnauzers (author)2012-03-04

Wow really nice (wish my actual signiture looked that good). I'd be honored to get one too.

Mr Dude65 (author)2012-03-04

This is amazing! I am probably much too late for it, but if you are up for making another, my addy is Would love to see it!

guatsamosa (author)2012-03-02

Very Cool!!! Just wondering, what version of Solidworks did you use?

CapnChkn (author)2012-03-02

"For those interested, comment with your email address, and I will create a custom model of your name,"

This is not a good idea. This is just the thing "Spambots" look for to send you mountains of useless mail about tickle videos.

There's an email system in place here on Instructables. All you should have to do is say, "I want one!" in the comments, and check your mailbox at the top right of the page periodically.
ziggalo (author)CapnChkn2012-03-02

Ok, thanks for the suggestion. I was not aware of the system that was in place.

Pizzapie500 (author)2012-03-01

OMG! Time for me to buy a 3D printer. Oh and btw, he said first three. So yeah, no more need for emails.

yoyology (author)2012-03-01

I love this! Makes me think of the book Godel, Escher, Bach. He discusses a carved wooden model that combines G, E, and B so that each can be seen from one face of a cube.

If you're still willing to make models for folks, I'd love to have one. yoyology -ATT gmail _DOTT_ com. :-)

Dioxybenzone (author)2012-03-01

And awesome idea! It looks really cool.

Do you happen to remember where you saw your inspiration?
