I remember seeing a sculpture in an album that I was browsing through, and it was a man playing a piano from one view and a man playing the violin from another view. I was fascinated by the concept and decided to create one of my own.

I played around in Solidworks, a CAD package, and created my own "perspective" sculpture of my signature. I then produced it with a 3D printer.

For those interested, comment with your email address, and I will create a custom model of your name, which you can 3d print. If you don't have a 3D printer, I can upload it to shapeways.com where you can get it printed. I said I would do this for the first three, but if I have time, I will try to do this for as many of you as possible. Just comment :)

Step 1: Pick 2 or 3 views or images for each perpective.

First, you need to decide what you want each side of your model to look like. For my signature, I naturally selected my first name from one perspective and my last name for the other. For the UCLA one, I decide to project a third image from the top-down view of the model.

He's done my siignature, he's uploaded it to Shapeways, I've paid for it to be produced in my choice of size (5 inches along its longest dimension) and material (a smooth-surfaced black plastic which appears silvery in certain lights), and Shapeways tells me they'll ship it by March 19th — coincidentally, my birthday.

It took a while, but here's what he made for me ...

Will the video embed?

Here"s a link to a video of the model made from my signature (or one of my signatures — for security's sake, this isn't the one I use on checks or on most correspondence) — http://db.tt/y9zvmVLA

Still considering requests from the CAD-less teeming masses? I love this idea and have a lot of friends who would like it as well! Are you considering contracting? If you're still feeling generous, I would love one (lorikgator@gmail.com) of my own. If you're looking to profit from your ingenuity, let me know how much for a few of them and we can work it out!

Hi,

I sent you an email a couple of days ago. Let me know if you got it.
lorikgator says: Mar 21, 2012. 12:17 PM
I did! Thank you for replying so quickly and I'm sorry my response has been so slow! Traveling for work means slow on personal e-mail... I'll respond shortly!!
ziggalo (author) says: Mar 22, 2012. 2:19 AM
No worries, I totally understand. Take your time, no hurry.
KateGladstone says: Mar 20, 2012. 9:39 AM
I look forward to hearing again from the project designer.

ziggalo (author) says: Mar 8, 2012. 2:37 AM
Hi, same as above, I have a lot of work to do plus the huge number of requests I've gotten. I would encourage you to play around with the software and follow the steps I outlined in the instructable.

If my schedule frees up a little, I'll send you a message about it.

Thanks
ziggalo (author) says: Mar 8, 2012. 1:02 AM
I'm adding new pictures of models I've done for some of the people who have commented. I also did one with Kobe Bryant's face and name.

This is so cool!
I would love it if you could make me one, my email is qwerty_t@live.ca (Taryn).
I know theres already more than three, but it's worth a try :D
ziggalo (author) says: Mar 6, 2012. 9:26 PM
Hi Taryn,
At the moment, I have a lot of work to do with the requests that I have already received, but when things lighten up and I have time, I'll shoot you an email about it. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply.

Looks very NICE! What is the largest scale that you can produce in. Send me more info on your products and services please.

Would love a signature made! You have my email - what's next?
KateGladstone says: Mar 4, 2012. 10:10 AM
I see you need 2 or 3 images — can you please use the same image (my first-name image) for all 3? I was going to send you my first and last names, but my last name is so much longer than my firstt that this may not work properly, or may just be unpleasing when done by this process. Oh ... Where do I go to give you a vote?
ziggalo (author) says: Mar 5, 2012. 12:59 AM
right above the title of this instructable there's a banner about the contest and on the right , there's a vote button.

Thanks!

Thank you!/

I voted for this project! Will my being a handwriting teacher increase the odds of being picked to get one?
marcusmxc says: Mar 5, 2012. 1:06 AM
Pure awesomeness! I think a video to see the different perspectives would add to the cool effect!

WOW! That is so AWESOME! I don't know if you're up to making these for everyone on here, but I would LOVE one! Im getting into 3D pringting myself, and Im making an Instructable on how to make your own extruding head. This file would be an awesome test for it!

I would like to see this in a youtube video, so my brain can wrap itself around this idea. That would be really cool, thanks!
nwlaurie says: Mar 4, 2012. 2:19 PM
me too! I have difficulty with 3D visualising (even 2D maps cause me grief!) but I really like the idea. I'd also love to know where I can see the violinist/pianist. Nick
lance.plater1 says: Mar 4, 2012. 12:43 PM
Hi your design looks amazing I would love it if you could make one with my last name Plater in cursive where the r makes a line to make the intersect of the t...just like the pic above but there and t are connecting by the line...

Heres my email ( lance.plater1@gmail.com )... I would love it if you could make me one!!

This is fantastic. I want one please.
dcoyne says: Mar 4, 2012. 9:39 AM
This is awesome. I'm in a CAD 3D Modeling class and we have to come up with our own projects that we build in SolidWorks and then make them with the machines they have. They have a 3D printer, so I'd be so greatful if you would design one for me!

My email is hardnotlife93@hotmail.com
dcoyne says: Mar 4, 2012. 10:05 AM
I voted for your entry btw
dcoyne says: Mar 4, 2012. 9:49 AM
you don't have to actually make one for me-- I'd appreciate just the solidworks files of the cursive design (i'm no good at cursive)

--thanks

It'a perfectly okay if you have to make the "leg" of the K touch the line I draw underneath it in this version of my signature — often, they end up touching anyway.
KateGladstone says: Mar 4, 2012. 9:52 AM
My e-mail is handwritingrepair@gmail.com, and you can see my signature the version I use for personal papers) on the icon to the left of this message. (Since it's first name alone, it obviously isn't the one I put on checks:)
I'm figuring that the first-name-only version looks more striking and may be,easier for you to produce in 3-D; let me know if you need another/longer/larger version
KateGladstone says: Mar 4, 2012. 9:47 AM
As a handwriting instruction/remediation consultant (and director of the World Handwriting Contat), I'd love a 3-D model of my signature! Where do I send you my signature for 3-D-Ifying?
