My colleague art.makes and I have been experimenting with shapes based on this basic pattern and various ways of making them. Here are photos of the shape 3D printed in metal and plastic. Also, attached is a medium resolution .STL for anyone who wants to print their own.

Probably SLS, Selective Laser Sintering.
