Step 29Machete or Knife Handle Made from Old Tires

Machete or Knife Handle Made from Old Tires
The chunks of old tire are carved to shape with a knife and riveted in place with nails.
The ends of the nails are bent over and pounded flat.
Seen in Kilifi, Kenya.

I used these machetes to build an outrigger sailing canoe there.

The Kenyans are amazingly inventive people; I was recently in Kenya, and used machetes just like these ones to help build a mud house. While there I also saw car battery stick welders and the use of inner tubes as lashing. I think it's great to see some of the resourceful tricks I saw in Kenya used here in North America. Thanks for helping to promote recycling and re-purposing in a world that produces far too much waste.
