Step 46"Flaming Chimney" Fire in Hollow Log

\"Flaming Chimney\" Fire in Hollow Log
My cousin-in-law Anthony Fenner builds amazing fires at our family reunions.
After a bit of a fire is established he puts a hollow log vertically on top of it.
The rest of the fire burns away and that hollow log continues to blaze all by itself like a giant flare for a really long time.

It looks great, it's pretty safe, doesn't make much smoke, isn't bothered by wind, etc. etc.
Now we save hollow logs for special occasions just like the Fenners do.

I know this post was a while ago, but i'm sure i'm not the only one with this question. How exactly does one obtain a hollow log? I like to have campfires in my backyard but out of respect for my parents and their lawn i need to keep them small (and insulated from the ground; i was going raise it so that there's some space underneath... any ideas? ) and this would be a great way to have a small fire that's really hot. Can you just find hollow logs? could you make one?

I've heard of people doing this for makeshift forges and such (kilns maybe? I can't remember...) I think it was explained by the wood insulating it, allowing it to build up heat inside, and combined with the cylindrical shape, gets lots of air in there, leading to a really hot, clean, thorough burn. Something I'll have to try one of these days...
