Step 7Sharpen Sandpaper with an Old Tire

Sharpen Sandpaper with an Old Tire
When the sandpaper gets clogged I sand a chunk of old tire with it, and then it cuts well again.
The rubber works like a big eraser to scrub the sawdust out between the grains of abrasive on the sandpaper. You can buy products that are meant to do this, but an old tire works plenty good, and you'll never have trouble finding one.

Here's my favorite power sander. It's an old floor sander. I turn it upside down and use it for a drum sander. It's loud and dangerous but it does a nice job.

Here I am touching a tire tread to the spinning drum. See how much cleaner the sandpaper is where the tire hits it.

an exercise for the reader: what makes this particular tool dangerous?

My biggest fear would be the pinch point between the drum and its guard. I've lost skin on the sanding wheels we use at work; no problem, it happens. But the idea of having my hand (or shirt sleeve, etc) pulled between a still moving drum and getting trapped there would have me breaking out a disc grinder to remove most of the housing around the drum, possibly even removing the entire motor and drum assemblies and shortening up the band to make it a permanent modification. Instructable idea?

the actual drum is completely unguarded and the whole things upside down?

Added to the unguarded belt and the fact that the dust is directed right back at you and there is no platform to rest the workpiece on and since it's a floor sander, I would assume that the switch is on the handle by the floor. This just plain awesome and would have one in my shop any day. Should be diesel powered though.

No it should be powered by a tesla turbine that run off the exhaust gases of your car so you drive along sanding in a trailer attatched to your car in a cloud of dust exploding CDs and exhaust gases

Thanks, that gave a great visual for this morning. But in my vision there is an open trailer and all the user is wearing is a cod piece and some steampunk goggles, while dancing a little jig and singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow. If we use a diesel powered car, we are pulling a trailer you know, then it can be Tesla turbine diesel powered!

About the only thing cooler would be to run it off some sort of pulsejet.

Hm. I foresee 'Steampunk Beer Goggles'..

well you'll be happy to know i roughed a wee illustration and I'll vector it up or do a hand colouring in photieshop i think i got everything -top hat beer hat -steampunk goggles -tesla turbine diesel sander motron 5000X -big cigar -cod piece -crazy boots -big jacket flying out like a cape (makes him go faster i swear) -exhaust of turbine directed at his groin (just happened???)

Some big welding gloves and sanding metal so the sparks are flying would be a nice touch. Canons, there should be some canons.

beer helmets are pretty easy to make using a hardhat, that flat metal stuff plumbers use to hold pipes up, and air hose for fishtanks. be warned however, that you must clean the hose out or it will give you a nasty case of heartburn (firsthand experience).

As long as the user isn't an idiot, you should be fine. I've done this with my belt sander. Works great.
Aug 9, 2007. 5:25 PMfreedive57 says:
Danger spots: Can't tell if the sander is fastened to anything! Belt guard needed there's a large slot at one side of the drum where something (the work, a hand, stray tool or other stuff like the tire piece) could get pulled in and maybe spit out the other side with GREAT force right at the operator.
