1. An assortment of Perler beads

6. Clear self standing picture frames from wallmart

Step 2: Set Up Your Beads.

Choose whichever 8-bit character you want. I chose Mario. I gridded off a picture to make it easier to figure out where to place beads. You can use tweezers to place the beads, this helps a lot especially if you have big hands.

Step 3: Iron Your Beads

Follow the directions on your Perler beads very carefully. I sat the Iron to medium heat and waited a few minutes to heat up. Lay your special paper on your design and Iron for around 20 seconds, or until your beads are melted together well.

I flipped mine and iron both sides, just so they're all connected together really good.

Let everything cool off for a while before you continue.

Step 4: Finishing Up!

Use a few dabs of superglue to attach your character to it's stand.

You're done!

That wasn't very hard at all, but the finished product is really cool. I made a bunch of these guys, they're really fun to just stand around your desk. I know they keep my day a little brighter, and they make great gifts!

I <3 Perler beads! I often use them in projects. Apart from the 2D aspect initially, they are extremely versatile!
Also great Instructable!

Do you have a good resource for large-scale images of 8-bit sprites? I've found plenty of tiny versions, but they don't always zoom well digitally.

I use Google images usually, but photobucket and are also good places. On google images you can change the image sizes you are searching for to large or medium to help get better pictures. Hope this helped!
