9 Unusual Uses for Aspirin

It's 6:30 AM and you feel a tightness in your chest. Antacids don't help. Your jaw is tightly set and your arm feels numb. Heart attack? Or is it an unreasonable response to a new zit? Either way, aspirin can help.

From heart attacks to zits, in the garden and the laundry room, aspirin has a ton of uses beyond relieving pain. Some of these I've tried, others I should try but haven't, and a few I hope to never try. You, the reader, are left to judge which is which.

Step 1: Heart attack mitigation

If you're feeling a bit of a heart attack coming on, pop some aspirin and dial 911. (Or your local emergency number.)

The aspirin has an anti-clotting effect that inhibits platelets from doing their little plateletty jobs. You know, hanging out together in large groups, getting rowdy, and creating thromboses. This is perfect for those occasions when you're on the verge of death due to an unplanned cardiac episode.

According to the American Journal of Cardiology, chewing the aspirin has a more immediate effect than washing the pills down with a cool glass of water. So that's good to know. Especially if you're a man over 50 with less plaque on your teeth than in your arteries.

I have done a lot of research on aspirin as a facial treatment, so I'd like to add a couple things:
For those that use this method: It's a great treatment, but DON'T use it too often if you want to keep using it. Your skin can build up a tolerance to the aspirin, and make the treatment cease to be effective. This is good to help calm skin in emergencies, but not on a regular basis.
ALSO, Salicylic Acid (asprin) makes your skin more susceptible to sunburns. if you are going to use this treatment, use sunscreen as well.

For face masks like dollgrownup suggested, you can dissolve one or two (depending on the size) uncoated aspirin in some aloe or honey . Aloe moisturizes and soothes skin, where honey has natural antibacterial properties. Combined with the aspirin, which has anti-inflammatory properties (duh), and exfoliating properties, it makes a great mask to help sooth skin and fight acne. Just remember to use sunscreen when being out in the sun after using this treatment.
I have also read rumors about "aspirin burns" due to aspirin used on the skin. It is always a good idea to test whatever you are using on a small area of skin to make sure you do not react.
Aspirin is used in a lot of store bought face washes and whatnot, but there are certain risks involved in making your own mask that you might want to look up if you are in the least bit concerned.

No bleaching effect, especially since you'd only leave it on for about 2 minutes.

For a hangover, besides the aspirin, take some high dose of a B-Complex tablets (usually known as b 100, a 100mg of each of the B vitamins), and drink something with a bit of salt like V8 or Clamato juice. Alcohol really depletes the B vitamins and drinking causes dehydration. You have to replace those electrolytes and water to feel better fast!

tkjtkj in reply to Hades di AngeloSep 11, 2011. 8:52 AM
Aspirin can have some rather serious negative side-effects, including:
1) gastritis : irritation with possible bleeding in the stomach
2) make a disease-based or drug-induced 'anti-coagulant' state into a serious problem.
3) make worse a cerebral bleed type of stroke
4) cause gout (as it competes with uric acid for the kidney's method of ridding your body of uric acid (urate). So, the urate increases and in some individuals gout can onset.

I'm not aware of anything ingested that can't have any negative side-effects ... yes, including food and water!

wilgubeast (author) in reply to mattyfuMar 22, 2011. 3:02 PM
A bit on the expensive side, as the aspirin will only set you back about $1.29 for 100 325mg tablets whereas weed is often a bit more expensive. Even assuming a bottle of aspirin will last you 25 hangovers max (4 pills/hangover), the price differential is astronomical. Aspirin is also more convenient. In California, you can get aspirin over the counter, even without a medicinal use card.
m1ndtr1p in reply to LogM813Mar 20, 2011. 11:48 AM
No, not even close... If anything, weed makes it worse. No offense, but please know what you're talking about before suggesting something as ridiculous as that.

The best cure for hangover is not going overboard with your drinking, if you must get trashed, drink quality liquor instead of the cheap $10 bottle of vodka... The reason you have hangovers is due to the way the liquor was distilled, lower quality liquor is usually only distilled once, so there's still methanol left in the final product after the distillation process, which is what causes hangovers... Higher quality liquors are distilled multiple times (usually 4-5 times, but some have been known to be distilled up to a dozen times) to further reduce the amount of methanol left after the distillation process, and therefore the higher quality liquor is less prone to cause hangovers...

If you must drink cheap booze, drinking lots of water throughout the night and eating a couple slices of bread before you go to bed helps avoid or reduce the intensity of your hangover in the morning as well
bonecholampworks in reply to m1ndtr1pDec 11, 2011. 8:10 AM
The medical benefits of marijuana have only recently been realized...
As a lifelong migraine sufferer (albeit, slightly different than a hangover...) I've use weed as a pain reliever, and as a preventative. It's been found to have so many medical benefits - right down to relief of irritable bowel syndrome...so whose really to say that it might not work for hangovers? Until unbiased medical studies are done, no one can attest to that.
Roflolommo in reply to m1ndtr1pSep 26, 2011. 11:29 AM
Hangovers are caused by dehydration/Fusel oils. There's less fusel oils in higher quality liquors due to more distillation cycles. Darker liquors have more fusel oils (they purposely leave them in whiskey to give it taste) whereas vodka their going for just ethanol and water. According to scientific studies marijuana reduces nausea and dulls headaches. So yes it is effective to reduce a hangover.
alsports2000 in reply to m1ndtr1pJul 12, 2011. 11:39 AM
That's new information for me and I am not a chain drinker of liquor but I would like to know what liquors are considered higher quality liquors??. Thanks. AL.

I disagree, weed is a great cure for hangovers. I've used it many time.

That being said, If you have the 'spins' at all, weed will just make you spin more and eventually throw up.

At least this is what I've found to be true.
Smoke weed everyday.

Acetylsalacylic acid (aspirin) and salacylic acid (acne wash) are more alphabetically similar than chemically. Salacylic acid loosens the connections between keratinocytes (skin cells) and aids exfoliation, while ASA is a potent anti-inflammatory, inhibiting the prostaglandin cascade - it reduces the redness and puffiness of a zit. It has long been used in Hollywood (as well as the adult entertainment industry) to reduce the appearance of blemishes from acne or hair removal.
-friendly dermatologist.
JohnLeFou in reply to robeckerApr 28, 2011. 9:59 AM
The above is true, but you DO get salicylic acid by water hydrolysis. When ASA is left wet for a little bit, hydrolysis to Salicylic acid and Acetic acid (vinegar) occurs. This is why if you take a whiff of an aspirin bottle it has that vinegar smell from the ASA that degraded from ambient humidity, and also why there is no liquid formulation of aspirin. If you are thinking ahead as to why it doesn't degrade (as much) when we take it, ASA is almost completely absorbed in the stomach rather than the rest of the intestines. This is due to the acidic conditions that keep it protonated until it can get through to the systemic circulation.

It is a great double whammy of anti-inflammatory and keratolytic action.

True, men outnumber women in the engineer trades by nearly 100%.
But even 0,1% of female engineers in the world amount to more than 50 !!!…
Otherwise we would have so little of the whole type that we won't have to bother with Tchernobyls, BPs, CO2, and our regular leisures would still be reading, and chopping wood for the winter instead of fixing our Macs or surfing on the web !…
OK I'm joking. Many engineers (male or female) are very efficient people and work to ease our life, not poison it.
Still as I know at least 20 women engineer in my own city I'm sure that even in the USA, which is not the most prone towards equality between genders, you'll find more than 50 engineer women who do not need to be as sexy and beautiful as the latest Hollywood star to get a job in their field and be goddam as efficient as men !!!…

even more bonus points if you think to use urine to heat the battery.

negative points, though, if you forget that it's a battery you're peeing on and shock yourself.
KarenBoBaren86 in reply to codongolevMar 31, 2011. 11:16 AM
Mythbusters did a thing about peeing on a hot rail. Totally busted. I doubt a battery would do something a hot rail couldn't.
codongolev in reply to KarenBoBaren86Mar 31, 2011. 12:58 PM
I think that, to pee on a battery, you would have to be several inches away (at least with it still in your car). I think at several inches, you could shock yourself, especially if you peed on one contact and happened to be touching it while peeing on the other. the salinity would definitely conduct electricity.

and it was mainly a joke, but I feel like it's a point that could potentially be defended.
KarenBoBaren86 in reply to codongolevApr 1, 2011. 7:43 AM

flamekiller in reply to codongolevMar 25, 2011. 1:25 AM
The likelihood of that happening is nil, since a urine stream is usually too broken to conduct electricity up to the, um ... source.
codongolev in reply to flamekillerMar 26, 2011. 2:06 PM
I think if you got close enough the stream wouldn't be broken.
flamekiller in reply to codongolevMar 28, 2011. 2:03 AM
True, but that'd be pretty darn close.
kretzlord in reply to flamekillerSep 8, 2011. 12:20 PM
chances are, the urine pooling up on the battery would make a better circuit than back up into you, then through rubber shoes, rubber tires, and back into a ground on the car. Just my 2 cents.
skylane in reply to kretzlordSep 11, 2011. 3:11 PM
Even if it *could* happen... peeing on a battery... the current would go from the positive to the negative of the battery, hence , not to or through the pee-er...
Besides... wouldn't it be more likely that someone would pee in a container first, then pour it on? One would have to have a 60" inseam, or climb up over the engine...

This is such a dumb subthread....

Regarding #9 - take vitamin B12 and a glass of water before bed to have no headache at all. It's worked for me for 20+ years. (If you've had enough alcohol to cause stomach problems, it won't prevent that. However, the stomach is much easier to deal with when your head isn't pounding like a gorilla in a steel drum.) Message me if you'd like to hear the biochemistry behind it.
DconBlueZ in reply to DconBlueZMar 21, 2011. 4:16 PM
I read this in a biochem book by Isaac Asimov believe it or not, then subsequent personal research since my mid-20s confirms the effects if not the root cause.

Isaac said there's a small valve at the base of the skull that controls the balance of cerebral fluid between the spinal column and the brain pan. Depletion of B12 causes that valve to malfunction, causing pressure to build up in the skull, causing that jackhammer eyeball-squishing headache. I take 1000 micrograms of B12 before going out to party, or if I didn't plan well at least take it before bed. The water helps with dehydration, which is another side effect of alcohol. 1000 micrograms sounds like a lot but it's just one B12 pill.

If you've waited too long and your stomach is already sick then it's too late, you've already reached walking hangover stage and probably can't keep the B12 down anyway. Plan better next time.

I've yet to meet someone this didn't work for. If it fails you let me know, I'd be interested.

Awesome. Time to stop by the vitamin shop. Sounds a little voodoo-magic-y but i'm down for anything. I tend to get an uncomfortable hangover pretty easily... 3-4 beers will do it, or 2-3 of some nicer, higher-alch-content imports.

1000 micrograms sounds like a lot because you used micrograms. 1 milligram doesnt sound like very much at all. BUT OMG one million nanograms! Hah.

I'm curious... what do they cut the tablets with to make them human-finger-grasp-manageable?

Taking pain killers after child birth may actually be the sign of a person who has less capacity to endure discomfort, hence one who is more likely to try to quiet or discipline a child who is being annoying or disobedient.
AbstractDragon in reply to cwickenkampMar 20, 2011. 11:01 AM
It can also be a sign of vaginal tearing, severe muscle strains from labor, a strained bowel from labor, torn/strained muscles in the back or any number of serious conditions that can be caused by childbirth and are extremely painful.
On the other hand, bossing a new mother around too much about whether she's really in pain after childbirth can not only raise the chances of child abuse, it can raise the chances of her knocking you silly while she's at it. ;P

aspirin causes irritation and bleeding of the stomach lining , so taking aspirin on top of alcohol may not be such a good idea- especially if you are a chronic alcoholic with an already irritated stomach lining!
but you should definately avoid paracetomol like the plague- people have died from mixing alcohol and paracetomol due to the increased liver toxoicity.

If you wake up feeling really yeurgh due to your overindulgence the night before I can recommend ( :-) snigger) dropping two fizzy soluble aspirin in a glass and chugging it back- you will instantly be sick thereby removing a large quantity of undigested food and any undigested alcohol from your stomach. This may make you feel a bit better- you will still have all the absorbed alcohol swilling around in your bloodstream tho and a massive hangover, NB if tyou are dumb enough to try this no responsibility is taken for any ensueing consequences - especially the cleaning bills or any medical problems which occur
theqwertman says: Mar 20, 2011. 8:40 AM
This sounds ridiculously dangerous. Xo
I suppose if you're in the middle of the desert you may have to resort to such measures...
jtpoutdoor in reply to theqwertmanMar 21, 2011. 12:25 PM
why should it be any more dangerous than adding those sulphuric acid tablets you can buy at Halfords (Repco etc substitute local store that sells bits for cars here)
washing off your terminals with hotwater to clear corrsion is something which should be done regularly - cokes just gonna do it quicker (and you really DRINK that muck????!!)
jtpoutdoor says: Mar 21, 2011. 12:22 PM
and of course you plants won't have headaches
jtpoutdoor says: Mar 21, 2011. 12:19 PM
regarding heart attacks- the aspirin won't stop it happening if you're already having one! it will however, give you a better chance of recovery

Are you a shareholder of Bayer GMBH?

xenobiologista in reply to imperioMar 21, 2011. 8:36 AM
Aspirin hasn't been under Bayer's patent for ages, grandpa ;)
wilgubeast (author) in reply to xenobiologistaMar 21, 2011. 11:40 AM
Either way, I spelled Bayer's name wrong. It was the most widespread aspirin-flogging company that I could think of. It gets difficult coming up with synonyms for aspirin. Good looking out. (Although.... maybe if I spell it right, they might send me some shares? Ya think?)
geneorama says: Mar 20, 2011. 8:09 PM
I noticed your selection of alcohol for the hangover section includes 2 buck chuck and Malibu rum... funny choices indeed as they are both clear headache inducers!
wilgubeast (author) in reply to geneoramaMar 21, 2011. 11:26 AM
I found both under the counter here at Instructables HQ.

Too Right!
AR10NZ says: Mar 20, 2011. 6:09 PM
Hi : Have had only 1 hangover in 20 years, caused by a nostalgic purchase of a bottle of rum, from a Jamaican distillery, that I toured 40 years ago. We make our own wine, from fruit, or from Cantina wine kits, which are very quick, and economical. Brew beer occasionally, have a 60 liter stainless steel reflux still, which produces 91% ethanol, very pure. 25 kg of white sugar makes us 12 liters of ethanol, to be held in glass containers, with high alcohol carbon, shaken daily, for a few days, to remove any unwanted flavours / smells. Diluted to 40% before drinking, high quality flavourings are readily available. As my wife is chemically sensetive, I set aside 2 X the recommended methanol containing fore shots. The last 2 liters, the tails, I store, until I have 10 liters, mix 50/50 with water, then re-distill.
It is legal to distill for your own use, here in New Zealand, and we are agents for Spirits Unlimited, and can source all of their products.
Cheers,
Dennis.
t.rohner in reply to AR10NZMar 21, 2011. 2:39 AM
Hi Dennis

as far as i know, New Zealand is about the only developed country, where home-distilling is allowed.

We just got our spirit back from a professional distiller, where we brought or 2nd Whisky-mash. There is lots of paperwork involved(the distiller does it) and we have to pay alc. tax.
Around here, (Switzerland) you get in trouble by having a working still in possession. (Except maybe those small 1-3l copper toy-stills)
I brew beer for over 15 years(this is legal) and i could easily reconfigure some of the equipement for distilling ;-)

In Sweden(around 2500km from my place), when you buy large white sugar bags, everyone seems to know, what you use it for. Well, we used it to feed bees. (I was there on vacations, visiting a relative married there)
But then, you can also buy "turbo-yeast", flavourings and activated carbon in the same supermarket. For a beer above 3.5% alc, you need to go to a "Systembolaget"-store, which is the only place to buy "strong" beer, wine or spirits. There are long lines, before major holydays... and home-distilling is strictly forbidden.

But your comment is interesting to read.
(Ironic_on) Maybe you can boost the business, by offering free shipping to Saudi Arabia. (Ironic_off)

By the way, intersting product range on the website.

When camping i have chewed aspen leaves and for a aspirin like affect before, you can use more than just the bark to get some of the same effects, a leaf paste works nicely.
Honora says: Mar 21, 2011. 12:06 AM
Aspirin is good for deodorizing smelly clothing. I have a pal who runs outdoor courses for teenagers. He supplies the polypropylene thermal gear. Soaking the clothing in water which has had aspirin dissolved in it removes the B.O. However soaking the clothing in baking soda would do the same trick I'm sure, and be cheaper. If you come across a free source of aspirin, it's worth remembering the deodorizing trick. I found an ancient bottle of expired aspirin in a back country hut and snaffled it home for that purpose.
anotheryou says: Mar 20, 2011. 11:13 PM
Agreed out of much experience. Water!!! 2-3 glasses of water before going to sleep helps big time. Pain killers aren't necessary. Also during the drinking episode try to throw in a glass of water now and again. If you don't do any of that and you wake up hungover then the best cure is "the hair of the dog". I'm sure most of you know what that is but if you don't have another drink or two in the morning like a bloody marry. You'll feel tip top after that!
m.e.h says: Mar 20, 2011. 9:44 PM
You may avoid wasting water during "dead" times by washing your head first and washing your body while the aspirin does its thing on your hair.
moose2good says: Mar 20, 2011. 7:51 PM
Actually, falling asleep with an enema-bag full of sterile water in your whose-your-daddy will fight the hangover the best! Jes' be careful not to roll over too much, as the smell and clean-up will definitely attenuate the hangover....
moebuspcgold says: Mar 20, 2011. 5:40 PM
One tablet can kill any small pest like animal. Just mix the asprin in with some food and it will die from internal bleeding.
ginamarina says: Mar 20, 2011. 3:28 PM
I can testify that the 2 (or 3) aspirin with water BEFORE going to bed after a night out works wonders. And Gatorade or tomato juice in the a.m. for residual stomach ickies :)
AbstractDragon says: Mar 20, 2011. 11:10 AM
Most of the reason for the average hangover is dehydration.
Try drinking at least one or two glasses of water for every drink you had at the bar and skip the aspirin. Seriously guys, this one works.
BigGryph in reply to AbstractDragonMar 20, 2011. 12:30 PM
having been a problem drinker for more years than I remember, I began drinking a glass of water about every two drinks. This helped considerably. Upon awakening, I was't as clouded over as before.

If you wake with a hangover, instead of gulping water, it should be sipped over time to rehydrate your little platelet buddies. This takes time, so drinking water while drinking is your overall, best bet.

I have taken aspirin before bed, when I was alert enough to do so. it really does help.
AbstractDragon in reply to BigGryphMar 20, 2011. 1:28 PM
Well, admittedly, I'm a two drinks maximum type lightweight, so a couple glasses before bed works for me. Thanks for taking the time to weigh in for the higher volume perspective. :P

Aspirin doesn't do much for me, for some reason, but I suspect this is a YMMV situation.
criggie in reply to AbstractDragonMar 20, 2011. 11:59 AM

I would just add that you do not need to use aspirin, but just any
Acetil-Salicil acid tablets, since they are all the same, you just pay 10x price for the Aspirin name

Avoid most of the hangover by taking two aspirin and at least a pint of water before going to bed.
Tumunga in reply to mr.incredibleMar 20, 2011. 10:39 AM
If you're out drinking, and you have the ability to think about needing to drink water before you go to bed, you're doing it wrong!!1!

Best hangover cure ever. Or as I called it, hangover helper.

Take a quart of water. Take two aspirin. consume both by mouth. wait a few minutes for the water and aspirin to start kicking in. now go get that quart of gatorade or other electrolyte sports drink. If you have babies in the house, that bottle of pedialyte works just as well. Drink that down. If it was a really epic binge, or you are on the larger size, more water is called for.

by the time you have finished that second quart, you should be feeling lots better. But you better go use the bathroom now.

hangover is two things. All the toxic breakdown products from the alcohol in your blood are circulating around. Your kidneys and sweat glands are working hard to get rid of them, but both of these need water to work with to flush them out. Add water to your body to give them this flushing water.

The toxic chemicals secreted by your sweat glands are why someone with a hangover usually has noticeably worse body odour. get that water into you, and shower all that nasty off of you about an hour later.
chica.emmer says: Mar 20, 2011. 7:23 AM
My grandfather once told me an aspirin was the best thing for birth control. You (the girl) place a pill between your knees and ... that's it, no babies! ;-)

You forgot using it for soldering
TOCO in reply to app0Mar 19, 2011. 7:01 AM
How do you do that?
app0 in reply to TOCOMar 19, 2011. 8:03 AM
Make a powder: 2 parts aspirin for 1 part rosin. Then dissolve the powder in ethanol, until it turns into sorta something like dough. This worked for me to solder those thin wires with enamel insulation, that are usually used in magnet coils. The enamel is getting destroyed and the wire gets ready to solder, however, to remove the aspirin from the wire, you will need to solder it with clean rosin, not this thing.

Hope you understand me :-)
MrRedBeard in reply to app0Mar 19, 2011. 12:07 PM
Really? I'll have to try it out on some enamel wire I have.

Water and Aspirin also helps keep flowers alive longer, but that's a usual use for aspirin...

It can also be used to kill fungus growth in gardens as well.
