Step 1: What is Airsoft?

Airsoft is a sport much like paintball. Some of the only differences are that in paintball you shoot balls of paint, and in airsoft you shoot 6mm plastic BB's. Another one is that in paintball you carry around a gun with this huge hopper thing and a big gas tank at the bottom and in airsoft you use clips, and the batteries are inside the gun and not a gas tank that sticks out. Or if u have CO2 that's usually inside the gun also, or the spring if its spring powered. That's why i prefer airsoft, because the guns are more realistic and the ammo is much cheaper. The BB's usually do not break the skin, but you do feel a stinging sensation for about 5 seconds or so. It is also based on the honor system, which means if you get hit, there's no way of the shooter to know that, so you have to admit that you're out.

You might also want to mention that the colder the air outside gets, the worse that Gas guns operate. I play airsoft in Canada, and numerous times in this winter season have I already had my Beretta M9 get it's valves frozen open (Rapid fire, paced fire gets better results), due to using propane or green gas (both of which are already cold).

Just thought it might be useful to mention for people in colder climates.

 i use spring powered m14 sniper rifle with a 4 x 30 scope and a Jericho 941 CO2 pistol and if im sniping what ill do is take some string and a little bell and tie the string between 2 trees and put the bell on the string so if anyone gets close ill get a heads up its been proven to be helpful and i also use .20 gram bb's for better accuracy

bb's can break the skin, from my like 7 year experience of airsoft guns, (i am 14 and 11 1/2 months by the way), i have used alot of bbs.

the cheapest ones you can buy, are the yellow ones, a thousand for i would say a 10£, and the most expensive you can uy are the white ones, they are the heaviest, and therefore more penetratable, so the hurt, and can bleed on contact of bare-skin.

i just thought i would point that out for the newbies, but i bet i learn sumin from this.

Hey man, you're generally right about the colours, but that still doesn't explain to the full extent. The cheap yellow ones are really bad, you should never use them in a gun you plan on keeping, as they will break the gun. However there are many colours of the more expensive BBs that will weigh exactly 12gram or 20gram for example. 12g BBs are light, inaccurate and can break inside the gun. 20g BBs are what I'd always opt for, these can be used in nearly all airsoft guns.
It's unlikely you'll do much damage with 12gram pellets, and I still doubt you'll get much more than a red mark with the 20g pellets as long as you have the suitable clothing on and are not being shot point blanc.
And why would you shoot coppers from a gun at nearly 500fps? That's extremely dangerous and it could also damage your gun.

Actually, as WarPig mentioned, they do transfer *roughly* the same amount of force. But with the .12g bb's they tend to require less force from the piston to get them flying, and that means that in many cases the full amount of energy is not applied to the bb.

With heavier bb's, it usually ends up gaining a little more energy from the piston. Not to mention that a lot of the time, most .12g bb's are sub-par quality and have seams, aren't polished ect. which can really affect the fps and accuracy.

To be fair, the crosman .25g bb's are at the same quality level as some of the expensive ones online. Using them as the only ammo I'll shoot with me high-end AEG, I haven't encountered any problems in about ~2 years regarding damage to the gun or decreased efficiency.

ha ha yeah, those white ones kill. I got a gun that shoots those at around 750 fps (I haven't chromed it, its just what the box says) and ive broke skin many times on my friends. btw, the yellow ones are 10 grams, blue ones 15 grams, and white 20 grams (I think)

Pros use ~500 max, and thats for snipers. Do your research please. One of the most insane guns I've seen, the vulcan minigun replica (http://www.airsoftpost.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_591&products_id=28664) shoots 400ish. There are limits for field play, and assault rifles aren't allowed near 750.

but in my country, airsoft shooting is becomeing a bit more strict in the terms of law, you can only shoot on private land, not on public land or you have a risk of being shot by the armed police (ACAB), i mean it was alot looser a few years ago, when me and my freinds used to do it, and they used to be able to buy all over the place in toy shops and on the local town market, but luckily i have a local sportsshop in my town, that sells shooting gear.

By the seems of it, none of you lot know the slightest thing about simple physics (I'm only 14 and therefore not a genius). I saw an earlier post saying that a light bb has more penetration than a heavy bb as it is able to be propelled faster with an equal amount of energy. This is WRONG! Simply because an object is going faster than another does not mean it packs more of a punch, you need to take weight into account. Likewise, I also hear that lighter bb's go further than heavier bb's as with an equal amount energy, they can acchieve a higher velocity. This is also wrong. Yes they do depending on what type of airsoft shotgun you get. The 3 - shot ones definitely do because the shells load 3 bbs into 3 separate inner barrels at the same time. Some single shot shotguns do not require shells.

this is a great guide... but your missing one thing, and its very important. All airsoft BB's are 6.00mm no more, no less. Airsoft gun barrels are 6.05mm, 6.04mm, 6.03, 6.02mm, and 6.01mm. now with that out of the way, when you buy airsoft BB's, you must buy the ones that say "made in Taiwan" all good quality airsoft BB's are made in Taiwan. BB's from China are THE WORST THINGS EVER FOR YOUR GUN because they are made in a different way, and the BB's have little bumps that can be up to 0.03mm tall. Even though this may not seen like much... when you have used up 2,000 rounds, your barrel is ruined.

So, i would really like it if you would copy all that information into your guide, because it is very important for new players to learn.

apparently you know nothing. My first airsoft gun came with a 6.14mm barrel. Even a n00b like me knows what that does to the bb's velocity compared to a tightbore barrel. And Crosman sells some pretty good bb's that are 5.98mm.

Ehhh.. Crossman makes terrible quality BB's. They are great for Crossman quality guns. Any that shoot over 300 FPS with .2 bb's will work immensely better with high polished. My Echo 1 MP5-J would shoot 30-40 degrees off with crossman bb's... with high polished (Airsoft Elite), it has been reduced to around 1. By the way, most of the high quality BB's are 5.98 +/- .01. I think my gun has a 6.08, considering it's a Marui clone.

1. Umm, stock CA barrels are almost all 6.08mm.

2. 6mm airsoft BBs are NEVER actually 6mm. Get a micrometer and test for yourself; any brand. 5.95mm +/- .01mm is considered the gold standard.

3. Crap BBs can be made anywhere, not just China. TSDs are made in Taiwan, and their quality is sporadic at best.

You're wrong. I've seen sniper rifles, shotguns, and even mines use 8mm rounds. These are usually very expensive models though, so they're hard to come by out in the field. I've also seen M203's use 11mm rounds.

all airsoft guns can vary, it all depends on the manufacturer. it sounds like most of the guns you guys play with have plastic gear box's. normally .12Gram BB's arent worth a damn, but there have been exceptions. if your gun runs more than 300Fps its practically mandatory that you use no less than .20 Gram ammunition. otherwise your accuracy will be down the drain (in most cases) any good sniper rifle should use no less than .25 Gram. if you cant get good distance and accuracy with anything more than .20 Gram, you might want to look into finding a better sniper. if you are interested in an AEG, make SURE that the gear box is metal. if the Fps is over 300, make sure to use >20Gram BB's. there are two types of gas airsoft guns. Green gas (also can be propane) and CO2. both are good, the only difference CO2 guns can last a little bit longer on the field because you dont have to keep loading your gun with green gas. Safety should be top priority during all airsoft skirmishs. make sure to always wear protective eye wear at all times.

Airsoft gun's do not use clips, they use magazines. There are only like 3-4 guns that use clips.

Umm... what's the difference? I don't mean to sound stupid here, but almost all of the guns use clips. If by magazine you mean hopper, than many cheap airsoft guns use the scope as a hopper. Even my $40 CO2 pistol uses a clip, but I think magazine is just the overall holding place, whether removable or not.... right?

Let me clear it up, alot of people think that clips and magazines are the same thing. Magazines hold rounds. Clips (like stripper clips) load magazines.

Right, thanks. I like the clip on the M1 Garand, but the SKS doesn't make sense to me... why have a magazine that's not detachable and has to be loaded like that. What purpose does it serve if you have to feed it with a stripper clip? Easier to maintain or something?

eh.. gas guns dont work in the cold.. im either getting a kwa usp 45 or a cm030 (glock) the glock is electric...I have my doubts... but the saftey sucks on the usp, it has a plastic trigger, and I am only looking for a backup, so I think I,ll get the glock

Awesome I love playing airsoft. I have a AK-47 also with the stock there really good guns. but I do not have a secondary gun. I really need to get one. because some times my 420 round mag runs out FAST!!
I can get a 600 round mag here at Mr. airsoft

Wow that's all I can say. My friends and I started much like this...walmart guns etc. If you want a decent gun worth using you have to put money into it. My most recent gun is a semi custom M4 for $245. Total all my gear is $700 with more to come. Go to Evike.com. They have the best selection of rifles, pistols and accessories. From experience my friends and i have learned...buy quality not quantity.

my gun is a P22, but if you want a huge airsoft pistol i would recommend a Desert Eagle. Some of those things are huge. But remember to look at the other features, dont buy it just cuz' it's big

airsplat, man I found a tiny little gas automatic that fires 250 (my friend's a bit of a wimp) it holds 9 rounds on the mag. their spring revolvers are good too.

well, each time u pull the trigger, the barrel revolves but does not shoot you need to pul back that little piece stickin out of the back. Or push it down, rather. i got it for about $25 plus shipping & handling it is powered by spring which is why u push that piece down.

I love the idea behind your pic where your gear is laid out sans body but unfortunately it's blurry . . .oh well I have the fixed stock version of that AK! good times! I'm a sucker for accuracy so i have since moved onto the JGBAR10 sniper rifle and it's awesomeness in a bag (the thing can consistently hit a coffee can 150feet off with minimal mods) about the bad guns thing though . . . once you start shelling out too much money for good ones then the game begins to lose a bit if its challenge . . .my bro and i started off with a 3 for $20 springer pistols kit (to test the water so to speak) and i will still argue that it was probably the best $20 i ever spent. poor accuracy can actually be desired if one's limited to a suburban back yard as far as playing fields are concerned.

ahhh the 'ole "Spray and Pray" school of tactics! lol yeah mowing down the competition is always a great option! I'm a real tight wad though and the only bb option for me is the biodegradable ones. Excel are expensive and most of the other bio's are crud (or not available around me) so I reverted to accuracy and the "make each shot count" tactic.

A clip: a metal containing cartridges for an automatic firearm. A magazine: a chamber for holding a supply of cartridges to be fed automatically to the breech of a gun. So pretty much the same thing.

Airsoft guns are fun to play with, and are easy to maintain, once you really get into airsoft you can make your own custom guns and mess with gear boxes. here is a form that is based for east coast airsofters that I go on, even if your not on the east coast you can still check the forms and ask questions.

I agree with That Weasel but have a couple of things to add . . .(is it me or did that sentence sound demeaning lol) The cost is actually very low depending on what you buy . . . if you buy a super cheap walmart special then maintaining it is not as crucial so you can skimp a bit more if you buy a super expensive gun and dont consider mods to be maintenance then again it's fairly inexpensive since the parts should be of good quality and don't wear out . . .basically all that's needed is a barrel cleaning after each game and lubricating the gearbox once in a while (or if it gets dirty) the only materials needed here are some old clean rags and a lube that's DOES NOT use petroleum distilates (WD-40 is out) as the hardware store for something silicone based. the midrange guns might cost you a bit more since you won't want to throw the gun out if it breaks since you spent too much on it to do so but this means when the plastic gearbox wears out or some teeth break off you will buy a new one all in all though maintenance is fairly low cost (maintaining my complete collection cost me only about $15 once for the supplies which will last at least a year. This is cheap compared to Paintball where o-rings, gas refills, etc add up FAST) it was longwinded but hopefully helpful

to maintain an AEG? well the gun usually comes with a cleaning rod. U can use it after every couple of games. If u use graphite coated BB's clean after every shooting. If u use a crappy clearsoft AEG they usually use AA batteries, but they last a pretty good amount of time. If u have a good gun it'll have a rechargable battery. It will say how long u need to charge it in the usuers manual

i prefer paintball, airsoft pellets can get stuck in ears, noses and other places... paintball is more expensive though :(
