Introduction: A Voltage Booster Using Two DC Motors:

Hi!

In this instructable, you will learn how to make a voltage booster by using two different DC Motors.

The trick is simple.One motor has to be the high voltage motor and the other one has to be the low voltage motor. The high voltage motor will be used here as a generator while the low voltage motor will be used here as a motor.

DC motor acts as a generator since all permanent magnet DC Motors are also generators.

For load, i have used the 7V LED light bulbs which will be operating at just 2.5V.

Hence the name "voltage booster".

Step 1: DC Motor Installation:

Make a simple plastic or wooden stand andinstall the two dc motors on it.

Connect the shafts of the dc motors as shown in the picture and the stick them to the base.Remember that the 2 DC Motors have to be different.

The voltage ratings of the bigger one is 24 volt and the smaller one is 3V.

Step 2: The Capacitor and the LEDs:

Mount LED bulbs on the plastic stand and connected wires to the bigger 24 volt motor.You can use a 2.5 volts super capacitor as a battery to charge and discharge.

Connect the terminals of a super capacitor to the 3 volt DC motor. Now if the capacitor is discharged, it won't operate the motor therefore the light bulbs won't not start glowing.

In this case, you will have to first charge the capacitor to its rated voltage 2.5 volts after which the motor should automatically start itself and since it is connected to the higher voltage 24 volts DC motor therefore the 24V DC motor will also start rotating thereby generating voltage higher than the supply voltage.

Now this high voltage should be enough to light up your LED light bulbs.

Step 3: Testing:

After you have completely charged the super capacitors, your LED light bulbs should start glowing brightly.

For as long as your capacitor remains charged, the bulb will glow.

Since I've used a super capacitor in this project with the rated specs of 100 Farad therefore it can hold its charge for a long time.

That's the only reason because of which the LED lights keep glowing for some time.

Is not a booster, is a losses

if you connected the capacitor directly to the led it would be longer illuminated

no machine has a yield of 100%, quite the contrary

when you transform electrical energy into mechanical energy and again mechanics into electricity, you are having a poor performance

whenever energy is transformed there are always losses

it is a principle of physics

I think the point of this project is "boost" . light up 7v led with 2.5V. The motors are acting like transformer.

Better you use a electronic inverter circuit. You will have better performance. But as curiosity is a very funny circuit

LEDs won't even light if connected directly to the capacitor coz the Leds need 7V while the capacitor is rated at 2.7V

Thats why you'd use an electrical boosting circuit. You're wasting a lot of energy by using two motors. Yes, it "works", but the energy loss is quite high for something like lighting simple LEDs.
