I have to agree with the two people above me. I can somewhat read schematics but this one confuses me. It would have made more sense if the rectangular shape of the op-amp was included and the interior circuits were shown inside that box. Then you could show each of the eight pins and what they should connect to. I tried to wire this up but it took me over an hour and it doesn't work. So apparently i did something wrong.

hey, im having a tough time reading the schematics, and the "download a copy in pfd form" isn't working, does anyone think they could set up a link. i think i get most of it. but im a little confused and flustered

I cant seem to get this to work at all, im using polarised capacitors so not sure what the orientation should be like? im a relative newbie at this. The leds light up and stay in mid level brightness.

got it, the generic mic i used was connected wrong.. all the comments below really helped in tweaking its sensitivity and brightness. thanks for this great instructable.

Its me again...so i managed to get how to hook up transistors, but in this schematic where did you get the 47k resistor?? Also you said we need 5 10k resistors and this only used 4...just wondering... close to completing this but I was just a bit confused on those two things..if you could help me when you have a chance that would be nice Thanks

Does it simply change the amount of current that goes through the positive lead on the op amp?

I made a sound activated Joule thief that uses a single AA battery.  I showed it at Maker Faire last weekend.
