DIGI CAM 150.jpg
OK let me start by saying that I am not responsible if you lose an eye or anything else for that matter. if you decide to build this. I'm not into airsoft but i've noticed alot of questions about grenades and stuff so i thought i'd toss in my five dollar project. Like i said before i'm not into airsoft so i'm not going to add a remote control trigger, laser trigger or antything too technical. That i'll leave to you guys. Have fun. I'm interested to see what you guys add to this project

Step 1: UNHOOK SPRINGS

DIGI CAM 114.jpg
Start by disconnecting the springs from the rat traps' bail.

Look I know other people know this, but what is a claymore? What does it do?
wreckedGT says: Mar 17, 2012. 7:18 AM
Not bad! Much better than many of the others on here. I was looking at the '10 min moustrap' ones that are copycat posted over and over again on the site and threw one together just to try it out. ...no power at all. I thought It would be great to use a rat trap, then I found this. Very nice, I will probably build this with my son.

Even though it is pretty easy to figure out by reading through the instructions, you should put a recommended supply list right at the beginning so people can easly print it to go and buy what they need. Other than that, great job. Thanks.

Hey I Love your invention its just what i've been looking for. i would greatly apprecciate it if you would make some instuctables on how to make the electromagnetic and remote triggers because that could be fun as well as practical
IX Smith XI says: Feb 11, 2010. 6:10 PM
you can use a toy rc car for remote trigger

voltagedude says: Aug 30, 2009. 8:22 AM
wow this is a realy good idea but could you make another instructable with less steps? i know im asking alot but iv gone thru you instructable and i still dont really understand the concept. thanks- voltagedude
oniman7 says: May 25, 2009. 12:17 PM
I've got an idea for a very simple electromagnetic trigger. Get a nail, or other magnetic object, and attach it to the trip mine, in front of the metal. Then wrap a copper wire around it, and lay the copper for as long as you want the "fuse" to be. When you want it to go off, attach a 9V battery to the copper wire, and it should become magnetized, puling the metal part of the mouse trap down to fling the load.
Capt. Howdy (author) says: Jul 23, 2009. 2:56 PM
Sorry no reply my computer got hit by lightning. Plus I have been slayin the trout. Finally got my computer fixed. I made a trigger like that but had problems gettin it to work then i remembered you have to make multiple wrap layers in the same direction. It finally worked though.
daelans says: May 28, 2009. 4:47 PM
hahahaha, thats a pretty funny joke. stand in from of a mine and set it off... im still lolzing... lolz....lolz, it might just be me but... LOLZ!!!.... haha thats incredibly funny actually.
daelans says: May 28, 2009. 5:19 PM
damn you man, i was planning to make a half altoids can mine... but i cant compete this this mofo. im almost afraid to use it, then i remember, its not pointed at me! lolz!. argh, i just wish i had more time and ratraps. this is absolute pure awesomeness, i cant believe a non airsoft created it. its fricken perfet. its a shame it only goes to five asterisk. (everyone always says 5*, but thats sopposed to be an asterisk. i love this mine. almost said ible, tis ony an alright ible, finished product is beyond lettters tho, its like ... chuck norris made out of rat traps and an altoids can. i just have one question though. WHY DIDNT I THINK OF THIS!!!?!!!!?!.

Hey man, I'm sorry... I don't understand what triggers the device to fire. Is it on a tripwire or something? Very clever idea though!
Capt. Howdy (author) says: Apr 24, 2009. 2:26 PM
Yep, you could use a trip wire and tie it to the trigger. I don't know the range or how hard an airsoft rifle shoots. I shot the trigger with a cheap red rider type bb rifle to see if it would trip and it did. You could drill a hole under the trigger through the wood and trip wire it to trigger in any direction. I saw alot of instructable grenades and stuff with limited range and this idea just popped into my head. i thought i'd help you guys out and post it. who knows, with some mods. you might turn it into some type of grenade. I have some other ideas to try out but i put a drill bit through my hand and now i'm down for awhile. Glad you liked it. I just had an idea, instead of a rat trap maybe mod a mouse trap to fit inside the tin. HMMMMM.
daelans says: May 28, 2009. 5:39 PM
lolololol, overlook one little tiny drill one time, and it never lets you forget NEVER, at least not for a couple o months. laughin witch you, not at you. drill bits can hurt. (i know from exp). 5 asterisks man. 5 asterisks.

Atten418 says: Apr 24, 2009. 11:41 PM
I was just trying to make one but I ended up bending the bale back and forth so much it snapped. Oops. I'll try again tomorrow. I was wondering if you could bolt a peice of cardboard or plastic to the trigger (to increase the area of the trigger that could be stepped on) and lay it on the ground like a land mine. If anyone stepped on it it would it shoot straight up? The mini claymore is an interesting idea... I've seen one where it uses two rat traps together, maybe that would increase the range? Again nifty little guide. I like that you've limited the parts to only the trap, the tin, and a few nuts and bolts.
Capt. Howdy (author) says: Apr 25, 2009. 7:43 AM
Thanks I'm glad you like it. Some of the cheaper brands of traps use a more flexible wire for the bail, or maybe you could remove the one that came from the factory and use some type of wire that you have lying around. you might want to slide a nail or something through the springs as you remove the old bail so you don't have to mess with resetting the springs. the bigger trigger sounds like a good idea the one i have looks like it's copper coated and maybe easy to solder something to. Good luck.

this is nice... very nice. i will use this on my next match. sever quick improves though... tie a short string from the can lid to the wooden base... it looks like the is a possibility to get hit in the nads by a altiods tin lid. why dont you just go and get some bbs @walmart? ez and cheep. this is pretty easy to make if you know anthing, amd i like the reusable factor... i will make a better trigger mec for it though... oh yeah when the bal close, does it flap down all the way flat like normal? unfortunately, this isnt explosive. maybe you could put some caps in the works for a bang??
Capt. Howdy (author) says: Jul 23, 2009. 2:42 PM
Sorry no reply my computer got hit by lightning just got it fixed. The lid does fly off quite hard and if you have my luck the nads is the first place it would end up. The bail folds down almost flat.
ILIKEPIE333 says: Apr 29, 2009. 5:42 PM

sokay, but its really good, scared my friends away from my house!
Capt. Howdy (author) says: Apr 30, 2009. 1:42 PM
LOL i forgot to mention how much noise it makes when it's triggered. I thought about puttin some baby powder in with the pellets, for smoke screen effect.

yeah, make it a tme release think, then its a warning and they'll never even know

Hey! First off! GREAT DESIGN! Im soo building this over buying a $140 clay off some website that probably just orders from china. But I had a doubt, what happens with the lid of the Altoids tin when u trip the mine?
Capt. Howdy (author) says: May 5, 2009. 4:43 PM
Thanks. The lid takes off like a frisbee. I am going to try cutting it in half lengthwise just to see how it effects the pellets pattern, when i get around to it.. I have accidentally tripped it at arms length several times and i have'nt lost any blood yet. I would wear eye protection though and try not to have your mouth open if you trip it at arms length. GAAACK lol
nitrodude150 says: May 5, 2009. 5:21 PM
lol! K! TY! I am SOOOO Building this after my APUS History exam this Friday ;P
christopherk239 says: Apr 29, 2009. 12:17 PM
it looks great do u have any vids of it in action? i think im gonna build on of these soon. great instructable tnks.
Capt. Howdy (author) says: Apr 29, 2009. 1:53 PM
Glad you like it. Sorry i don't have a video camera. As soon as things get back to normal around here (rough week). I'm going to post how to build the electromagnet trigger. BTW be sure to wear safety glasses when you test it, according to what you load it with it could damage your eyes i almost did.
finfan7 says: Apr 25, 2009. 5:02 AM
This seems a bit overly complicated. The design could be simplified greatly but the instructable is excellent. Nice thorough documentation and a fair grasp of the english language which seems, sadly, out of reach for so many other airsoft enthusiasts..
Capt. Howdy (author) says: Apr 25, 2009. 8:14 AM
Thanks for the compliment,as for the complexity of the project. I could spend all day (and half of the night) at my workbench. I second guess everything for the sake of durability. The more complex the project the more i like it. I didn't take into account that a novice might want to tackle this project. I'll take that into consideration the next time.I have already made a remote control vacuum activated trigger for this device. That was too easy so i made an electromagnetic trigger from a nail, magnet wire and a 9v battery so it could be triggered from a longer distance. I don't even own an airsoft rifle. I just wanted to help out and maybe spark some new inventions. Thanks again.
Atten418 says: Apr 25, 2009. 9:07 PM
Wow I would love to see how your remote triggers work. I've never done something like that before. I completed this project today! Very cool. Here's an update on my landmine idea. I've tried attaching a thin aluminum plate to the trigger to give it a bigger area (and thus raise the chance someone will activate it,) however the aluminum is too heavy. It pulls the trigger down so that it will not stay set. I also tried placing a curved aluminum plate over the trigger, the idea being that the aluminum would flex inward and hit the trigger... Unfortunately it is not flexible enough and has a high rate of failure. And ideas welcome!
Capt. Howdy (author) says: Apr 25, 2009. 10:00 PM
Try bending the part on the bait part of the trigger where the wire part of the trigger hooks up so that it overlaps the wire part a little more. I've bent it inward to make it more sensitive for a rat before, As for the electromagnet trigger I drilled a hole under the bait pan trigger thing, screwed an electromagnet to the bottom of the trap and hooked it to the bait pan. when i touched the wires to the 9v battery it retracted the shaft inside the magnets coil wire and triggered the trap. I'm going to have to build another one I"ve made so many mods to it its falling apart now. I guess setting it and triggering it a couple hundred times has worn it out. LOL
serith says: Apr 25, 2009. 1:47 PM
that thing u said about the mouse trap grenade, i tried something similar after i read that post and it worked! I will take a few pics then post them on this form as soon as i can get around to it.
Capt. Howdy (author) says: Apr 25, 2009. 3:20 PM
Cool, can't wait to see that.
Capt. Howdy (author) says: Apr 24, 2009. 2:35 PM
Here's another idea. get rid of the rat trap trigger all together cut the wood down to roughly the same size as the tin and rig the safety system to trigger on impact. It would make an awesome grenade if you could do that.
littlewit says: Apr 23, 2009. 3:46 PM
Very cool I like the safety feature Do u have any videos of it working? It would b cool to see how hard it shoots
Capt. Howdy (author) says: Apr 23, 2009. 4:29 PM
Thanks. Sorry i don't have a video camera. If you are within four feet when it is triggered it kinda stings if they get you in the face. I loaded it with OO lead buckshot and accidentally tripped it on my workbench. It shattered a four foot flourescent bulb and left a lump on my forehead LOL. I don't think it would cause that kind of damage with airsoft pellets though. I don't have any of those to test it with. Thanks for the vote.
