Alright, now it's time to begin working on the buttons starting with Select and Start!

All of the Game Boy Color's buttons are on rubber pads which, after they make contact with the copper plates on the Game Boy, complete the circuit activating the switch.  Our goal is to split it off from the Game Boy so they can come out to BMO's front side.

Start and Select are connected by ground wires and normally you'd have to use the Volt Meter to see which ones are connected.  Lucky for you, however, I already marked which are the Signal Pads (those specific to the certain button) and left the Ground Pads (those already connected) unmarked.  The only thing you have to do is apply solder to each of the Signal Pads, connect one lead of the Momentary Push Button Switch to each, and connect the other leads to one another.  This will complete the circuit and allow us to use the Start and Select buttons on Beemo's front side.

Be sure to add Hot Glue to each of the wires at the end.

Hi first of all love the project.

Im just having trouble understanding the button wiring and was wondering if it was at all possible to have some help. If its not to much work i was wondering if you could draw some line between connections on this picture.

Thanks.

Hi Treeboy21,

Sorry this message took me a while to get to you.

Anyway, I apologize but I didn't happen to draw any circuit diagrams or anything while I was working, I was really just testing out connections while I was working and I don't really seem to remember that much.

What I suggest doing is using a volt meter and testing out the connections between the button pads. It may seem a bit daunting at first, but after you find the common ground connection, everything falls into place.

I was wondering why the buttons appear to be wired in series?
Maybe I'm reading the explanation incorrectly; could you please clarify the wiring?

p.s. Thanks for the great Instructable!

It's probably just to add to his overall cuteness, and that he looks more like a vectrex than just a Gameboy. Also, Finn and Jake never use Beemo's built on buttons, and even in the episode "Gaurdians Of Sunshine" it's apparent those are just decorative.

Pardon? I was hoping you could clarify how you wired up the Start and Select buttons.

Oh, sorry I thought you meant in the series ie in Adventure Time

They're not wired up in series, they're in parallel.  They share a ground wire but they're not in series.

Haha, sorry, I see how that could have been confusing.

Just to clarify, (for the Select button for example) you only need to attach a single wire from any one of the (marked) signal pads to the switch and then another wire running back to any of the ground pads? And then the same again for the Start button?

Yep! Don't forget to connect the Start and Select Button Ground leads together!
